Why is *.tar.gz still much more common than *.tar.xz?

Whenever I see some source packages or binaries which are compressed with GZip I wonder if there are still reasons to favor gz over xz (excluding time travel to 2000), the savings of the LZMA compression algorithm are substantial and decompressions isn't magnitudes worse than gzip.

Using R to download zipped data file, extract, and import data

I was also trying to do this today, but ended up just downloading the zip file manually.

I tried something like:

but I feel as if I'm a long way off. Any thoughts?

Python: zip-like function that pads to longest length?

Is there a built-in function that works like zip() but that will pad the results so that the length of the resultant list is the length of the longest input rather than the shortest input?

How do I download a ZIP file of an entire project from Google Code when there are no prepared downloads available?

But I'm working on Windows and I don't have the svn binaries ... do I need these?

I can access individual source code file or view the Subversion HTML pages, but that just allows me to access source code files one-by-one.

What is a good Java library to zip/unzip files?

I looked at the default Zip library that comes with the JDK and the Apache compression libs and I am unhappy with them for 3 reasons:

1. They are bloated and have bad API design. I have to write 50 lines of boiler plate byte array output, zip input, file out streams and close relevant streams and catch exceptions and move byte buffers on my own? Why can't I have a simple API that looks like this Zipper.unzip(InputStream zipFile, File targetDirectory, String password = null) and Zipper.zip(File targetDirectory, String password = null) that just works?

2. It seems zipping unzipping destroys file meta-data and password handling is broken.

3. Also, all the libraries I tried were 2-3x slow compared to the command line zip tools I get with UNIX?

For me (2) and (3) are minor points but I really want a good tested library with a one-line interface.

How to [recursively] Zip a directory in PHP?

Directory is something like:

I am using the same PHP Zip class used in PHPMyAdmin http://trac.seagullproject.org/browser/branches/0.6-bugfix/lib/other/Zip.php . I'm not sure how to zip a directory rather than just a file. Here's what I have so far:

This error only happens when I try to unzip on my mac, when I unzip through the command line the file unzips ok. Do I need to send a specific content type on download, currently 'application/zip'

What characters are forbidden in Windows and Linux directory names?

I know that / is illegal in Linux, and the following are illegal in Windows (I think) * . " / \ [ ] : ; | = ,

What else am I missing?

I need a comprehensive guide, however, and one that takes into account double-byte characters. Linking to outside resources is fine with me.

I need to first create a directory on the filesystem using a name that may contain forbidden characters, so I plan to replace those characters with underscores. I then need to write this directory and its contents to a zip file (using Java), so any additional advice concerning the names of zip directories would be appreciated.

Why does x,y = zip(*zip(a,b)) work in Python?

OK I love Python's zip() function. Use it all the time, it's brilliant. Every now and again I want to do the opposite of zip(), think "I used to know how to do that", then google python unzip, then remember that one uses this magical * to unzip a zipped list of tuples. Like this:

x = [1,2,3]
y = [4,5,6]
zipped = zip(x,y)
unzipped_x, unzipped_y = zip(*zipped)
unzipped_x
    Out[30]: (1, 2, 3)
unzipped_y
    Out[31]: (4, 5, 6)

What on earth is going on? What is that magical asterisk doing? Where else can it be applied and what other amazing awesome things in Python are so mysterious and hard to google?

Can I zip more than two lists together in Scala?

Given the following Scala List:

val l = List(List("a1", "b1", "c1"), List("a2", "b2", "c2"), List("a3", "b3", "c3"))

How can I get:

List(("a1", "a2", "a3"), ("b1", "b2", "b3"), ("c1", "c2", "c3"))

Since zip can only be used to combine two Lists, I think you would need to iterate/reduce the main List somehow. Not surprisingly, the following doesn't work:

scala> l reduceLeft ((a, b) => a zip b)
<console>:6: error: type mismatch;
 found   : List[(String, String)]
 required: List[String]
       l reduceLeft ((a, b) => a zip b)

Any suggestions one how to do this? I think I'm missing a very simple way to do it.

Update: I'm looking for a solution that can take a List of N Lists with M elements each and create a List of M TupleNs.

Update 2: As it turns out it is better for my specific use-case to have a list of lists, rather than a list of tuples, so I am accepting pumpkin's response. It is also the simplest, as it uses a native method.

I know I can get the project through git clone command, but is there any way, how to download the project through the web interface from BitBucket.org? In the best way, I am looking for a way to download a project source as ZIP compress file.

Looks like no built-in Library/API in C# to unzip a zip file. I am looking for a free (better open source) library/API which could work with .Net 3.5 + VSTS 2008 + C# to unzip a zip file and extract all files into a specific folder.

Any recommended library/API or samples?

Mac zip compress without __MACOSX folder?

When I compress files with the built in zip compressor in Mac OSX, it results in an extra folder titled "__MACOSX" created in the extracted zip.

Can I adjust my settings to keep this folder from being created or do I need to purchase a third party compression tool?

How do I ZIP a file in C#, using no 3rd-party APIs?

I'm pretty sure this is not a duplicate so bear with me for just a minute.

How can I programatically (C#) ZIP a file (in Windows) without using any third party libraries? I need a native windows call or something like that; I really dislike the idea of starting a process, but I will if I absolutely have to. A PInovke call would be much better.

Failing that, let me tell you what I'm really trying to accomplish: I need the ability to let a user download a collection of documents in a single request. Any ideas on how to accomplish this?
