How do I disable the login screen on XFCE?

I'm using Xubuntu 11.10, but can't see how to disable the login screen. I'm pretty sure I set it to auto login during setup, but recently upgraded, and now it's asking for a password when I turn the machine on. Also, I've disabled "prompt for password on resume" but the password is still showing. Any ideas how to disable both of those passwords?

Save and restore terminal on reboot

Is there a way to save my terminal emulator windows and tabs for when I reboot the computer?

I generally have about 10 or so open tabs at any given time and opening each tab to set up everything after a reboot is relatively long. I would like to at least save the current working directories and name each tab works with so I can be more efficient.

If it helps, I am running Xubuntu 14.04.

How to know the corresponding command line cmd for the UI click?

I can click the "movie player" from the GUI of Ubuntu, but how could I know the corresponding command line cmd. I want to run the movie player from commmand line.

And this is not only about the background command for the movie player, I want to know all the actual command that was run by the x-window shell when I click on one of the icon on the menu.

Many thanks.

What to do?

Why won't Xubuntu let me use dual monitors

ASUS laptop and Xubuntu (11.10) running off the live CD will give me my dual monitors, but when I install Xubuntu I can't set up dual monitors. When I boot from the live CD both monitors come on even before it is fully booted. But in installed mode "desktop" and "grandr" says only one monitor. The "NVIDIA X Settings" show two monitors, (CRT-0- (ViewSonic VX1937), and DFP-0- (Apple Color LCD)), but the CRT-0- has no information in its window and the "Reset Hardware Defaults" button is grayed out.

SSH Keychain for Xfce

I have recently switched from Gnome to Xfce on Ubuntu 9.04.

In Gnome, the first time I entered the passphrase, it prompted me to save the passphrase.

In Xfce however, I am prompted for the passphrase every time I connect.

Is there a simple way to save the passphrase in Xfce?

Linux installs - where should I put them?

I am relatively new to Linux, I am using Xubuntu 10.04.

A lot of the software I download from the net, e.g. Aptana/Eclipse are just ZIP files that I open and run.

  1. I wish them to be in a specific folder where I can reach them from everywhere when I run "Eclipse".

  2. I want them to be available to all users.

  3. I want to be able to start them from the drop-down menu on the desktop.

How can I do that?

VirtualBox: using physical partition as virtual drive

Background: I am using VirtualBox installed on Windows 7. From within VirtualBox I am using Xubuntu as a virtual OS. The reason I chose this approach is so that I don't have to keep turning off Windows and rebooting from Xubuntu every time I needed to switch OSes. And VirtualBox's seamless mode is pretty amazing to allow me see Xubuntu and Windows 7 all in one screen.

Issue: Now I am thinking of a way to have Xubuntu more integrated into my system. By this I mean I want to have a physical partition for Xubuntu. But I want to still have the feeling of the seamless mode.

Question: So finally, my question is: is it possible to load a partition in VirtualBox as a virtual OS?

Case examples: Ideal scenario would be: I physically boot up and login to Windows 7. Now I want to access Xubuntu, so I load VirtualBox and access my Xubuntu partition without rebooting. And the other way around too, i.e. I boot up the system, login to Xubuntu, and can access the actual Windows 7 partition through VirtualBox.

Other info: Please note that I am not talking about getting access to files, as I have a completely separate partition for my files, and am very familiar with VirtualBox's Shared Folders option.

aview: Invalid magic-not p?m family format

I am simply trying to use aview to display a simple JPEG image using the terminal, however every time it returns this error:

Invalid magic-not p?m family format

It happens with other files of other formats too; I am not sure what the issue could be, and searching the error doesn't help much.

I am running Xubuntu 12.04 and using zsh as my shell.

How do I restore the standard Ubuntu Gnome login after trying Xubuntu?

I've been running Ubuntu with Gnome for some time now. I wanted to try out XFCE, so I tried the suggestion from the site http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/xubuntu and entered the following command:

$ sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop

Unfortunately, this installed not only xfce but also changed the initial login screen. While I can tell the login manager to start a Gnome session, I would like to revert to my previous startup graphics and login manager.

How do I revert back to the normal ubuntu desktop?

can't unlock system settings, such as network settings, to edit in xubuntu

I can't change any settings nor install anything using the xfce GUI on my xubuntu 14.04. Some setting-windows have that unlock button you usually click to enter your password to gain root privileges, but nothing happens if i click on them:

enter image description here

When starting up that machine, it asks for the installation of language stuff. When I try to install that, I get this error:

enter image description here

How can I fix this?

EDIT:
I just tried to start /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 as suggested here but it fails:

xubuntu-pool-1 vm-admin # /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:3863): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_variant_new_string: assertion 'string != NULL' failed

(polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:3863): polkit-gnome-1-WARNING **: Failed to register client: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name org.gnome.SessionManager was not provided by any .service files

EDIT2:
Actually, it doesn't seem to fail. It doesn't return to the bash prompt but the unlock and install doesn't work anyway.

Edit3:
I also made sure that "PolicyKit Authentication Agent" is checked in startup.

Update:
I just found out, that this issue only happens when logged in via xrdp. If I'm on the local vmware console (this machine is virtual), it works just fine. So the issue must have something to do with xrdp.

Output of that polkit command using normal user:

$ /usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1

** (polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1:4540): WARNING **: Unable to register authentication agent: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: Cannot determine user of subject
Cannot register authentication agent: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.PolicyKit1.Error.Failed: Cannot determine user of subject

This output is the same for the command beeing run without and with sudo.
