Is it possible to run NXT-G software under Linux using Wine?

I would like to use Lego Mindstorms NXT-G, but I do not have a regular access to a computer running Windows or OS-X. I have tried to use the official software in Linux using Wine, but it didn't even install. I was wondering if anybody has had better success, and if yes, how it was done, what works and what still doesn't.

I am aware that there are other options for programming the brick, and that some (most?) of those run on Linux, however, these are not allowed in competitions such as FIRST Lego League, which makes them somewhat less suitable for my purpose.

Any Way to run Mac OSX software under Windows?

I know that you cannot run MacOSX within a virtual machine, but I am curious if there is something similar to WINE that emulates MacOSX enough to allow running some MacOSX software under Windows. Maybe even through application virtualization?

Update: The site AlternativeTo.net has a lot of suggestions of alternative applications on different platforms.

Thanks!

Password-protected PDF not opening on Linux

I have a PDF document (from the British Library via interlibrary loan) which is password protected via some sort of remote validation of the password. I tried to open it on Ubuntu 14.04, which failed.

It seems that the ADE (Adobe Digital Edition) is needed and not available for Linux. I will report on the problem and some attempted solutions.

The Problem:

  • Acroread (version 9.5.5) opens with a message "you need to be connected to the Internet" (which I am) and closes immediately.
  • Evince (version 3.10.3) asks for a password and has a console error "Syntax Error: Couldn't find the 'Adobe.APS' security handler". I suspect I am missing this "security handler".

What the instructions for the PDF say:

  • Can I read my documents on a different PC than the PC I downloaded it to?

Yes, as long as the PC is activated with the same Adobe ID as the first PC you opened the document on. When you click your link, you are sent an acsm file which is a 'key' to download the PDF file from our servers. This acsm file is not the document itself. It can however be saved onto a memory stick and transferred to another PC for use. As with FileOpen, the other PC needs to have Internet connectivity. We would advise you not to take this approach and to simply click on the link you were sent on the other PCs on which you wish to open the document (remembering they must be activated with the same Adobe ID).

Installing Notepad++ via WINE on Ubuntu Linux

After moving to Linux, I miss having Notepad++ with me and I want to bring it along to my new environment.

I have Wine installed and downloaded the npp.5.8.5.Installer.exe. I have no idea what directory or where this .exe exists or if I have to query Wine or what.

How do I install Notepad++ via Wine on Ubuntu Linux?

How to run todolist from abstractspoon in linux?

I want to run the ToDoList (any version from 5.3 to 6.2) in linux (ubuntu 11.04)

I've tried to use under wine 1.2 and 1.3 without success:
   1 - I've downloaded the program (todolist_exe.zip);
   2 - unpacked it;
   3 - and use the "Open with Wine Windows Program loader";
4 - the mouse cursor starts thinking and stops after a few seconds and nothing happens.

I've also search the net for help but still haven't found a solution.

After I used the command line "wine ToDoList.exe" it gave me:

wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\plugplay.exe"
err:module:import_dll Library MFC42u.DLL (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\user_name\\Progs\\todolist\\ToDoList.exe") not found
err:module:LdrInitializeThunk Main exe initialization for L"Z:\\home\\user_name\\Progs\\todolist\\ToDoList.exe" failed, status c0000135

Please help :)

Using Excel on Ubuntu (Linux)?

I have heard of people running Excel on Ubuntu using Wine, but my impression is that this can be more frustrating than it's worth. I suppose the top alternatives are to either just run Windows or else use something like OpenOffice.

Has anyone successfully used Excel on Ubuntu, and if so, what was your conclusion?

For reference, I'm currently using Excel 2007 and recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04, although I would be curious about any experience with this.

Does installing licensed Windows software (e.g. CS5) on WINE contravene EULA

I realize that this question is extremely vague, but I am wondering if (as a general rule) it is against the terms of standard EULAs to install on WINE.

For example, I have a licensed copy of Adobe CS5 that is currently installed on Win7 that if I could legally and functionally run on Ubuntu, would make my life much easier.

WINE and Windows viruses

Might be a silly question, but I was wondering... WINE has permission to edit certain (profile) folders and provides Windows based software to run under Linux. Could it also provide Windows viruses an environment to run? Like running Windows based botnet connectors, spam senders, infect other (WINE) programs or folders, etc.

UPDATE:
Furthermore, what could be the dangers to your Linux system that would allow such things to run?

Using samsung SSD magician on linux

I have a samsung SSD and Samsung has a magician software for their SSD. I would like to use it, however I just have linux and the software is only supported on Windows. Is there a way to install it with wine? When I downloaded the installer and ran it with wine, I can only get past the first window which is where I select the language. After that, a window pops up that says, "INSTALLATION CANNOT CONTINUE: "Windows Management Instrumentation" service is disabled. Please enable and try again.

Is there any way I can run this software on linux? It may be helpful to know that I am running linux mint 15 xfce. I don't know what other info would be helpful. Please ask if more info is needed.

Edit

I have solved this problem by obtaining samsung magician DC, which runs natively on linux. This is my follow-up question about how to use Samsung Magician DC to update an SSD's firmware.

How to set CPU affinity in Wine or CrossOver?

There are some old games who don't like the multicore processors in today's computers. I am wondering if there is a way to set the CPU affinity for them to '1' under Wine or CrossOver? i.e. In a native Windows environment you would right click on the game's process in the Task Manager then set the affinity there.

I've came across a program called RunFirst.exe, but can't figure out a way to run it, then the game in one command.

Suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

Why Cygwin needs recompile application but Wine does not?

Cygwin and Wine both are compatibility layers. One is implementing POSIX on Windows, and the other is implementing Windows API on *nix. Why is it necessary to recompile binaries to run on Windows with Cygwin, while you can run Windows applications using Wine without recompilation?

Font smoothing in Wine

I've recently switched from Windows to Linux (elementary OS), and installed Notepad++ with Wine.

It works fine, but looks like Windows 95.

Screenshot

I tried setting registry settings to make the fonts look better, and everything from this thread.

I also tried compiling Wine with this patch applied.

Nothing makes a difference to the font rendering.

How can I enable font hinting or anti-aliasing in Wine?
