Run Windows Store Apps in a Window on the Desktop in Windows 8?

Is it possible to run Windows Store apps in a window on the desktop in Windows 8?

For example, I think the Finance app is awesome, I just don't want it to occupy dedicated space on my screen (either taking the full screen, or snapped to the side). It would be great if I could run it in a window on my desktop.

Is this possible? I think developers need to view/run/build their apps in a desktop window in order to work productively. Is this the case?

How do you uninstall Windows 8 apps that are not on the start screen?

If an app is on the start screen, I can right click it and choose "Uninstall" to uninstall it.

But if I have previously chosen "Unpin from Start" for an app, so that the app is no longer on the start screen, then how can I uninstall it?

Getting desktop (not Metro) Skype for Windows 8

I have Windows 8, and I want regular Skype, not Metro Skype. Metro Skype doesn't support many features that the desktop version does, and it's buggy.

I tried to go to http://beta.skype.com/en/download-skype/skype-for-computer/. When I hit "Get Skype for Windows 8," I'm redirected to the Windows Store to install Metro Skype.

How can I download and install normal Skype on Windows 8?

Install a Windows 8 Modern UI app without the Windows Store

How do I go about installing a Modern UI/Metro app without using the native Windows Store app on Windows 8?

I don't know if it's even possible or if it is, how the app even gets installed from the Windows Store in such cases.

Volume mixing Windows 8 Metro apps [duplicate]

How can I control the audio volume of a Modern-UI application?

In Windows 7, you could volume mix programs, using the built in volume mixer:

volume mixer

In windows 8, you can access the mixer in exactly the same way as in 7, on the desktop, but from here you can only mix desktop apps.

However, I cannot find a way of volume mixing Metro apps.

How can I volume mix Windows 8 Metro apps?

Windows 10 apps will not start

Just upgraded my Windows 8.1 Pro (Lenovo W540 laptop) to Windows 10, everything went smoothly, all my settings and installed apps preserved and work without a hitch.

The only issue is - Windows's own apps - Calendar, Mail etc. even Windows AppStore - won't launch. When I run them I very briefly see a window flashing and then nothing happens after that.

Any idea what's going on and how to fix it?

EDIT: Seeing bunch of these in Event log: Activation of app Microsoft.WindowsStore_8wekyb3d8bbwe!App failed with error: Access is denied. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information.

Install Windows Store apps from the command-line

We can install AppX packages (Metro/Modern/Microsoft-style UI apps) by using the following PowerShell command:

add-appxpackage C:\path-to-app.appx

But, I want to install free Windows Store apps from the command line. For example, install the free game Jetpack Joyride available on the Windows Store.

Is this possible?

How to remove apps from my list in the Windows 8 store?

I installed Windows 8 on my laptop to play around with it. I downloaded quite a lot of apps, even ones that I don't like. The ones I didn't like I uninstalled.

Now, I installed Windows 8 on my desktop. When I went to the store and go to "Your Apps" so that I can redownload some of the apps that I like, it shows a ton of the apps I consider "junk". Is there any way to remove them from that list? Otherwise, the "Your Apps" section can become very useless if the apps I want are in a mess of hundreds of apps.

How to fully uninstall a Windows Store app?

I have uninstalled Bing Maps, Travel and a few other Win8 apps from my computer. However, C:\Program Files\WindowsApps still lists them, happily taking up 1.5 GB of space.

Is there a better way to fully uninstall every trace of these apps than to simply delete the files by hand?

What happens to Modern-UI apps when they aren't in the foreground?

If I start a Modern-UI app and then switch to a different app or a normal program running on the desktop, what happens to the first app? I've heard something about the first app being suspended, but realized that I don't really know that for certain.

I mean, could you write a SETI@Home (BOINC) app if you wanted to, or will apps that aren't in the foreground always be suspended? Can you change that? I could see changing that based on available resources, running from AC vs. battery, etc.

This morning I heard about an iPad being recovered thanks to the "Find my iPad" app, and was wondering whether you could write such a thing as a Modern-UI app and have it work without being the running foreground app. (I'm aware that you'd just write a Windows service or similar, that's not what I'm asking about.)
