Why would you use Windows Server as a desktop operating system?

I've noticed quite a few people using Windows Server as their main desktop operating system. Why? I've never used it, so I don't know if it has some productivity features that aren't available in Windows Vista/7, but I'd like to know, if only to quench my curiosity.

Installing a fake microphone on Windows Server

My application, that is running on Windows Server (which is an instance on Amazon EC2) requires Skype to be able to make phone calls. The server, of course, does not have a microphone installed and I don't need it to have one, because my application changes the input source to a wav file when the call is established. However, Skype has a strict rule that a microphone must be installed for a call to be made.

Thus I want to install a fake microphone that will trick Skype's configuration.

So far, I was able to start and run the Windows Sound service, which enabled all of the sound settings.

Any ideas are very welcome!

Boot Windows Server 2003 without graphic card?

I just wanted to know why I have problems booting Windows Server 2003 without graphic card in PC?

Some of you will probably say it's not possible at all to run PC without gfx card, but it certainly is possible - I can succesfully run Windows XP Proffessional on the same PC, (just by switching boot HDDs with OS on it) and it boots up smoothly on the same hardware.

I have a headless configuration, no mouse, no keyboard connected + Halt on: No Errors in Bios set up.

Why is XP booting while 2003 is not? Am I overlooking sth?

PS: I've tried to disable installed gfx card device in 2003 device manager, but it doesnt help. PS2: Hardware is an old MB: Abit BE6-II

Display issue with fresh install of windows server 2012

I installed windows server 2012 last night on my home "server". I use server loosely. From the get go I had display and graphic issues. The image was fuzzy and jumbled up during the install. This continued once booted into the install.

I did installed Server 2012 twice now as the first time, I only installed "core". I know this is not a busted graphics card because it worked fine in Win7, during boot, and fine in "core" mode. Once booted into "GUI" install of Server 2012, the image was messed up again.

To make things even more weird, the windows "loading" screen looks fine. Once the login screen appears the image is fuzzy and jumbled.

My guess was that it was a driver issue. I did try to install the win8 x64 drivers from nvidia. This caused the system to become unbootable and I had to restore to a previous working point and uninstall the driver.

I did try two different monitors and cables. Also both ports on the back of the video card.

I did manage to get RDP running and that works fine. I rarely work directly on this machine but it would be nice to have the option back.

Does this mean I have "guessed" a Windows Server password?

Windows Server 2003 ... Long story short I am trying to determine an account password without resetting it. Working remotely and this is a production server so ophcrack or the like is not viable.

I tried to logon with a password I know was incorrect. Got the expected "could not log on; check your credentials" message.

Then I tried the password that I think is correct, and I got the "policy does not allow this account to log on remotely" message.

So does this mean it's the right password? (I need to know FOR SURE.)

And, this is not for any nefarious purpose, and I am a legitimate and authorized admin of the machine in question.

Task Scheduler repeat task not triggering

I am trying to set up a task that will start up an .exe every minute.

I have created a Trigger, that when triggered will run the .exe and repeat every minute indefinitely. (I have also tried creating a daily task, the once triggered will repeat every minute for that 1 day).

When I run the task manually, it works as expected, but if I leave the task to reach the 'Next Run Time' instead of it running and updating the 'Last Run Time', the 'Next Run Time' is updated to run a minute later and the 'Last Run Time' remains the same.

I have checked the Task History and there are no new events. Also, I have logging within the specified .exe and it's not showing that it has been run.

Mounting WebDAV drive in Windows Server 2012

I having problems mounting a webdav drive via explorer or cmd with the following command:

net use z: "https://.." /user:username password

System error 67 has occured.
The network name cannot be found.

Everything working fine on my other machines. Thought I had to install the "Desktop Experience" Feature but cant find it in Server Manager / Add Features. I`ve already added the "Media Foundation" Feature and the "WebDAV Publishing" is even installed with IIS. I cant find the WebClient Service in services.msc.

Any suggestions, how enable client side webdav support?

Teamviewer on Windows Server machines?

Can the free/personal mode of Teamviewer be installed and run on Windows Server operating systems?

I am planning on providing some remote service to an office in a different town. They have one server and 3 workstations. I think the server is either Windows Server or Windows SBS.

Is is possible to let a shutdown script execute before services get terminated?

I am currently trying to build a shutdown script for a windows server 2012 which will perform a planned failover to my replica server when the primary shuts down.

My problem is that the shutdown script gets executed after the Hyper-V service has been stopped.

Is there any possibility to get it executed before?

How to check if windows has automatic updates waiting from the command line?

If a Windows server (2k3/2k8) is set to "download but not install" updates, is there a way to check from the command line.. perhaps a log file or something I can check with powershell, to see if there are any updates actually waiting to be installed? I'm trying to prevent having to manually log on to each server to check, even though they want the "trigger" pulled manually. We have an automation system in place I can use (CA Autosys) - just not sure what to have it look for.

Creating popup message when connecting to RDP

Is there any way I can create some popup message when I connect to my RDP session? I wanted to show some important information for my work colleague so we don't forget.

We share one account to login to the server and we never log off, so the message should appear right after connecting.

We're on windows server 2008 R2 and using the native RDP application to remote desktop.
