Is there a way to turn off the file extension rename dialog in Windows 7?
The one that says
Rename: If you change a filename extension, the file might become unstable. Are you sure you want to change it?

Is it possible to remove the entry for the desktop from Windows 7's Alt+Tab list? So far I have found a post telling me to add an entry to the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/AltTabSettings
However, this reverts the Alt+Tab menu back to the Windows XP style where you don't get window previews. I just want to remove the desktop entry from the list.

Microsoft seems to make it harder and harder to go "up a level" in explorer with every release, and apparently have done away with it completely in Windows 7. Is there any way to bring back the "up one level" button in Windows 7?
Prior to Windows 7, the backspace key did this.

I just got done upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10 and I've found that the 'Favorites' panel in Windows Explorer got replaced with a 'Quick Access' panel and I can't seem to find a way to rename the pinned items in Quick Access like I could for favorite items under Windows 8.
Some of my pinned items are program-generated folders and I really don't have the option to rename them.
Am I missing something or did the rename feature get left out?

I currently have a file on the root of my external hard drive simply named ._.
, which I am guessing was added to my hard drive after using it on my MacBook a while ago. I'm trying to delete this file on my Windows 10 machine; however Windows keeps claiming the file cannot be found.
I also tried deleting the file through an elevated command prompt; however the same message is returned.
Is there any way I can delete this file from my hard drive through Windows?

I noticed today that I have a new Explorer context menu item called "Ticino" when I right-click a file on Windows 7. What is it?

Is there a keyboard shortcut in Windows Explorer (Windows 7), to put the cursor into the address bar (where the current path is shown)?

When I create a folder or copy files, after the operation finishes I have to manually refresh the Explorer window (F5). For example, when I create a folder, I don't see the "New Folder" until I hit F5.
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

I somehow have set the default file type association for a file type in Windows 7. It doesn't appear to be possible to delete it from the "Change the file type associated with a file extension" options screen. Is it possible to remove it?

I downloaded a ZIP file and dragged the files out of the ZIP into a directory. The subdirectories I copied displayed in Windows Explorer in green instead of the default black.
What does the green folder text mean?
(In case you're wondering, the download was from Baseline CSS)

I know how to do that on Windows Vista and Windows 7, and I know how to do that on Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, but neither of the ways work with Windows 10; it always defaults into the "Home" view.
(I am basically reposting this question for Windows 10.)

When I right click on a jpg file in Windows Explorer (Windows 7), I see that there is an "Edit" menu item. If I click this item, it opens the image in MSPaint. Blah. I have Paint.NET installed, and I'd like to change the "Edit" action to open the image in Paint.NET.
How can I go about doing this?

I keep getting this irritating warning when copying files over the network:
These files might be harmful to your computer
Your internet security settings suggest that one or more files may be harmful. Do you want to use it anyway?
I am copying a file from \\192.168.0.197\c$
(home server) to my local machine which is at \\192.168.0.4
.
How do I turn off this meaningless "warning"?

Is there anyway to hide desktop.ini
files, but unhide them when I need them? They get in the way when I'm moving files and such but I do use them so deleting them isn't an option.

Normally when you do a file operation in Windows Explorer then Explorer refreshes itself. So I delete a file, and it's gone.
But since yesterday when I for example delete a file, the file entry doesn't disappear. It only disappears when closing and reopening the folder, or when pressing F5. What could that be?
