Win+R runs as Administrator in Windows 8

In Windows 7 opening Run dialog (Win+R) and confirming with Ctrl + Shift + Enter ran specified command elevated.

In Windows 8 this trick doesn't work anymore and I miss it a lot!

Is there a way to get this feature back?

Why are half of my Metro apps in Japanese?

I set up an account of Windows 8 for my girl friend only to come to the shocking conclusion that it thinks its from Japan (or well somewhere strange):

enter image description here

I noticed she had filled in Swaziland as her location on her Windows Live profile, but I don't recall them speaking Japanese there.

Meanwhile my account seems unaffected and even a local (non-Live) account seemed affected. So far I couldn't find the right setting that would let me change the language of the UI itself.

Any suggestions?

How do I uninstall Windows 8 Consumer Preview?

Say, for instance, I don't like this Windows 8 consumer preview and that I downloaded, agreed to terms and installed it on my machine. How do I get rid of it?

I want to go back to what I had before with all my data intact. Is this possible? I installed it right over top my current installation rather than on another partition or perhaps a backup machine.

What can I do?

Prevent VPN from changing DNS on Windows 7 / 8 developer preview

I have a customer that uses a VPN connection, however it automatically configures my DNS settings to a non-existent DNS server, meaning every DNS resolution times out until the alternative is tried, which really slows down all Internet traffic.

Is there a way that I can prevent an application from overriding my DNS settings (without enabling UAC)?

Alternatively, is there a way that I can set up some kind of local routing that says 'when a DNS request for IP address A comes in, actually use IP address B'?

I'm using Windows 8 Developer preview (but I suspect it should work the same as Windows 7).

Thanks

Using Cygwin in Windows 8, chmod 600 does not work as expected?

I'm trying to change the permissions to my key file key.pem in Cygwin 1.7.11. It has the permissions flags: -rw-rw----

chmod -c 600 key.pem

Reports:

mode of 'key.pem' changed from 0660 (rw-rw----) to 0600 (rw-------)

However:

ls -l key.pem

still reports

key.pem's permission flags are still: -rw-rw----

This reason why I'm asking is that ssh is complaining:

Permissions 0660 for 'key.pem' are too open.

when I try to ssh into my Amazon EC2 instance. Is this an issue with Cygwin & Windows 8 NTFS or am I missing something?

How do I set my wireless network to be private instead of public?

Trying to maintain good security settings on my laptop, I want my home network to be interpreted as private and the university network at school to be interpreted as public. However, my home network is currently showing as public.

Here is what my Network and Sharing Center looks like:

How do I change my home network from public to private on Windows 8 Consumer Preview?

How do I hide the System Reserved partition?

How do I hide the System Reserved partition from the Windows Explorer?

On the above screenshot, I want to get rid of System Reserved (D:). How do I do that?

I will never need to access it from there, why would I need the entry then?

PS: I want to hide it, not delete it.

Is there a Windows 8 shortcut to display the taskbar?

In Windows 7, Win can be used to raise an auto-hidden taskbar. In Windows 8, Win overwrites the entire screen with the Start Screen.

Is there a keyboard shortcut in Windows 8 to display the Taskbar once it has been auto-hidden?

Update: thanks to Tom for the answer. A recent post on the Windows Team Blog has a comprehensive list of system keyboard shortcuts for the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

A Dark Theme for Windows 8

Is there any way for me to use Windows 8 in a dark environment? For a long time I had headaches that I couldn't fid their cause. Now, I'm using a dark visual style for my Windows 7 and since then, I haven't have any problems. Now I want to use Windows 8 release preview but I cannot find any way to use it in a dark theme/visual style. I've seen the files needed are patched but couldn't find any visual style. I also searched for 3rd party apps, nothing. I would very much appreciate if you could help me. Thanks.

Pictures below compare Explorer both in dark and Aero visual styles.

Which virtual machine software is preferable for running Windows 8 Developer Preview? [closed]

I want to preview Windows 8 and decided to install it on a virtual machine as I don't want to format an existing partition.

Installing Windows 8 by mounting the .iso results in the primary partition getting formated and losing the current operating system.

Can anyone who has tried installing Windows 8 in a virtual machine suggest which virtual machine is preferable to run Windows 8 Developer Preview from among the following virtual machine softwares.

Edit:
It is not necessary to restrict to the above list, I would like to know about any other virtualization software available.

Using git through cygwin on windows 8

I've got a windows 8 dev preview (not sure if it's relevant, but I never had this hassle on w7) machine and I'm trying to clone a git repo from github.

The problem is that my ~/.ssh/id_rsa has 440 permissions and it needs to be 400. I've tried chmodding it but the any changes on the user permissions gets reflected in the group permissions (i.e. chmod 600 results in 660, etc). This appears to be constant throughout any file in the whole filesystem.

I've tried messing with the ACLs but to no avail (full control on my user and deny everyone resulted in 000)

here's a few outputs to help:

$ git clone [removed]
Cloning into [removed]...

-rw-rw-r-- 1 john None 407 Nov 30 18:43 known_hosts

$ set | grep CYGWIN
CYGWIN='sbmntsec ntsec server ntea'

I realize I could use msysgit or something, but I'd prefer to be able to do everything from a single terminal

Edit: Msysgit doesn't work either for the same reasons

Force Windows 8 Metro apps to run lower resolutions below 1024x768?

I have installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my Samsung NB30 netbook. I was very excited to try it on this little box cause it has a touchscreen and Windows 8 is supposed to be optimized for touchscreen devices. The installation was quick and smooth and all the drivers seem to work well including the one for the touchscreen.

There is one major problem, though: when I try to tap one of the tiles on the Metro UI it displays

This app can't open. The screen resolution is too low for this app to run.

The machine has Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel GMA 3159 integrated graphics card and has maximum resolution 1024x600. I've read that Metro requires at least 1024x768.

Is there a solution to this problem? Is there a way to force Windows 8 Metro apps to run in lower resolutions?

How do I get the Windows 8 boot loader back and also list both Windows XP and Windows 7?

I have a system with Windows 7 and Windows XP, and today I have installed the Windows 8 Developer Preview into a spare partition (that I leave for a few months without any important data there). When booting from a bootable device and doing the installation, I format it so that it's a clean and fresh partition. The installing process finished, and now I have a boot screen with Windows 8 Developer Preview and Windows 7.

My Windows XP boot entry simply disappeared. So, I have used EasyBCD to modify the boot loader and reactivated the Windows XP boot entry from the system, and it displays Windows XP there. After I did that, I restarted my PC.

The only thing left is Windows 7 and my dear old Windows XP; as now Windows 8 Developer Preview disappeared from the boot menu. EasyBCD can't detect it anymore - a few times I logged into Windows 7 and tried to run it afterward. Please note that all versions are installed on separate partitions.

How do I get the Windows 8 Developer Preview boot menu back and get it to also list Windows 7 and Windows XP?

Windows 8 Defragmenter?

It seems like Windows 8's defrag command has some new options, including:

/K Perform slab consolidation on the specified volumes.

Does anyone know what this means in English?
