I am running VLC 2.0.5 on Mac OS X 10.6.8. At this moment, I have a *.mpg video paused, and I would like to know the frame number for this moment in the video. Is there a way to reveal that in VLC?
Thanks!
P.S. I scrubbed back and forth through the video to reach the point it is currently paused at.

I would like to configure VLC player to preload a significant portion (like a hundred megabytes or so) of a video file from the hard disk to RAM before playing it. Is this possible?

I used to be able to capture a video of my desktop in Windows 7 in an older version of VLC. But they've recently changed the UI and I can't seem to work out now how to record my desktop in the latest version of VLC 1.1.7.
I've searched the internet, but all the tutorials and "how tos" target an older version of VLC.
Update please tell us all the steps (how you chose what file you want to save the recoding too etc) not just to use screen:// or choose desktop. The problem I'm having is actually saving it out as a file.
Update perhaps it's because my Windows 7 is 64 bit and VLC is 32 bit?

Suppose we have video file some_video.
How to get length of it from a shell script (with mplayer/transcode/gstreamer/vlc/ffmpeg/whatever)?
VIDEO_LENGTH_IN_SECONDS=`ffmpeg .... -i some_video ... | grep -o .....`

I got my media keys to work in the hotkeys under the settings, and they do work... when I have VLC selected. If I deselect it (not close the window, just click on another one) then the keys will not work. So, while playing Skyrim, I cannot press the next key and change the song, unless I select it first, which then the button is pointless. Please help. How do I get the Media keys to work while in another window other than VLC player?

Is it possible to synchronize the playback of VLC on two different machines? I'd like to have two PCs in different parts of the house play the same video - so any other suggestions that would solve this problem are also welcome!

I have a 3D movie (.MKV
), with side-by-side 3D, and it works just fine at home. Now I want to see it at my friend's house, and they don't have a 3D system.
Is there any way to crop one of the sides on VLC or convert it to 2D?
My friend uses a Mac, but I can use Mac OS X or Windows 7 to play the file.

How can I check video file's information from VLC?
I want to see the movies' resolution(weather 1080p or 720p, or whatever), encoding information, encoded time etc.

I am running VLC 1.1.5 64-bit on Mac OS X 10.6.6. On the web I found instructions saying I should click on Video->Advanced Controls in the menu bar to reveal options that let me trim and cut video clips. However, there is no such option in my copy of VLC.
What I want to do is cut a ~2 minute portion from the middle of a two hour footage (in MXF format that QuickTime can't open) that I've got.
Is there another way to trim and cut clips of videos in VLC? Or should I use other (preferably free, Free, and open source) software? Thanks.

I just installed a server and I ran some sample video testing, but for some reason I can't understand the video is showing characters and numbers instead of pixels. Here is an image of how I see it:
Do you think it has to do something with the video card configuration, or could it be just a simple matter of setting vlc properties correctly.
I can't install any other videoplayer at the moment because I don't have admin privileges, so I am stuck with vlc at the moment :/

I am pressing
Media -> Stream -> Capture Device -> Capture Mode = Desktop -> Stream
Then selecting destination File = test.mp4
, leaving Profile = Video - H.264 + MP3 (MP4)
intact, ans setting FPS=24.
Then pressing Stream
button again.
FLV player starts to count time, although Record
button looks not pressed.
Then I do some playback of web videos and window manipulations.
Then press Stop
button on VLC player.
This sometimes gives me partial file which can't be played or some file without sound.
How to perform complete task? Where is the audio capture setup (what device to capture)?

Sometimes you kill a movie player before the movie ends, and when you reopen the movie on a later stage, instead of starting from the beginning, you want things to continue from where you left. Can VLC do the same?

I have many fonts installed and VLC's font cache rebuilding takes several minutes.
What is it for? How can I disable it?

When I play a movie with subtitles (on VLC media player), the text is often displayed too soon or too late. Is there a way to delay the starting point of the subtitles?

Apparently VLC has an A-B repeat feature, but how do I use it? There's even a related feature request. I can't find any GUI controls for it (Windows VLC version 1.1.9) I am aware there is a possible command-line method, but I seek a more user-friendly GUI/keyboard solution.
I ask specifically for VLC, but other free video players that support both mirroring (flipping horizontally) and A-B repeat are acceptable.
Background info: I have a video of a dance performance I need to practice.
- A-B repeat to concentrate on a single part at a time
- Mirroring to make following it more natural
