What does the number on the visual studio solution icon represent?

Just out of curiosity - what does the number represent? At first I thought it was simply the version/year, because I saw some 10's and some 8's (I have vs 2010 and 2008) but, then why do I have some 9's aswell?

Is it possible to find out the version/edition of a Windows 7 installation by looking at files on the hard disk?

Is it possible to find out what version of Windows 7 I have installed (for example Home Premium 64-bit) by looking at the files on the disk?

The disk I have is a MBR installed Windows 7 copied to a GPT formatted disk, and the bootloader is kind of out of order, so I can't verify.

Also, for whatever reason I have not been able to open the registry on the disk, so a method that does not need it is preferred.

Is the version string stored in any file?

How do I determine if an unbootable copy of Windows is a 64-bit or 32-bit installation?

I need to reinstall Windows on a laptop. I have the product key (its on the laptop), and I know it is Windows 7 Home Premium.

I need a way to determine if 64-bit or 32-bit Windows is installed, so that I can download the correct one from Microsoft. The computer is messed up so I do not have access to Windows to check it with systeminfo.

I took out the hard drive and hooked it to another computer, but when I run systeminfo it just gives information for the host computer, I did not see a way to change this.

What version of .NET am I running?

In Windows 7, how do I tell what version of the .NET framework I have installed?

In previous operating systems, (i.e. Vista/XP), I was able to go to Add/Remove Programs and it'd show all the versions of .NET Framework installed. With Windows 7, I just see "Microsoft .NET Framework 4 Client Profile" (in the Programs and Features control panel).

My guess is that it is only showing the latest/largest version number for my .NET framework install?

Note: I did also check Programs and Features > Installed Updates, to see if all installed .NET framework versions were shown there, but no luck.

How can I tell which Google Chrome channel I'm running?

Is there a way from within Google Chrome to know whether I'm running the stable, beta, or dev channel?

I was experiencing problems with recent dev releases and decided to go back to stable. Now I want to make sure it worked.

In "About Google Chrome" is says

14.0.835.186 m

Does that m stand for stable perhaps?

By the way I'm on Windows but I assume there's a platform-independent way to check?

Why does Windows 7 have a seven in its name?

Windows 7 reports its version as:

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

And by my reckoning it was preceded by:

  1. Windows 1.0
  2. Windows 2.0
  3. Windows 3.0 & 3.1
  4. Windows 95
  5. Windows 98
  6. Windows Millenium (the Windows that never was)
  7. Windows NT 1
  8. Windows NT 2
  9. Windows NT 3
  10. Windows NT 4
  11. Windows 2000
  12. Windows XP
  13. Windows Vista (how appropriate)
  14. Windows 7

Assuming I haven't missed any, that makes Windows 7 the 14th major version of Windows. Even if you omit NT 1 - 4, it's still the 10th major consumer version.

Does anyone know why it was branded "7"?

How to specify which GCC for MacPorts to use?

I compiled GCC 4.4.3 and installed it in /usr/local/bin, but whenever I install a port via MacPorts 1.8.2 the verbose output says MacPorts is using /usr/bin/gcc-4.2:

checking for gcc... /usr/bin/gcc-4.2

How do I make MacPorts find my own GCC 4.4.3? Here is my existing path:

/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/lib:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin

I am running Mac OS X 10.6.2 Snow Leopard.
