How can I Transfer Google Chrome's Data and Settings to another Google Account?

I use Google Chrome and I have 100s of bookmarks, history, search preferences, search engines, extensions, and apps installed.

I want to have a new Google account, and I need to move everything from my current account to the new one.

I did sign in to another Chrome and transferred my bookmarks using the Export/Import option. How can I transfer all the Google Chrome data, saved usernames and passwords, and everything else to the new account?

How can I close a Google Chrome profile?

When I install Windows or Linux (Ubuntu/Mint), I start off by installing Google Chrome. I sign in and sync 4 users within Chrome (4 Gmail accounts).

My extensions are sync'd as well. There is a setting under Settings > Advanced Settings that says "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed". I uncheck this every time.

I have all of my tabs opened for 2 different profiles. If I close all of them (along with the window) for a single profile, my Google Voice extension and Gmail Notification extension of the closed profile will still make notification sounds.

It often distracts me as I think there is a text/email on the profile I am viewing. Is there a way I can completely close the Chrome profile that I "closed"? I know I can surely do so in task manager, but it seems like a hassle to have to do this every time.

Understand structure of Chrome User Profile data to Transfer to new PC/ OS & avoid Settings corruption Error?

Older answers are not working so I'm including things that may work in pieces.
Chrome Version: 44.0.2403.155 m - 44.0.2403.157 m

I used to be able to copy entire Chrome User Profile\Default from OS to OS and PC to PC.

C:\Users\\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default

Chrome 44 Stable is more strict. I updated Chrome on both Win 8.1 instances (actual clones) to latest stable Chrome release. I did a copy + overwrite of Default "User profile" & it fails to work.

The resolution/ answer lies in figuring out the structure of User Profile data (folders & files) & what parts of it should be left behind v/s which ones to be migrated.

This error occurs due to changes in Chrome but weirdly, it does not occur on the source PC/OS.

Chrome detected that some of your settings were corrupted by another program and reset them to their original defaults.

| Learn more | Reset all settings | Sign in

Quote from Learn more:

Settings that Chrome protects from being changed

  • Default search engine
  • Homepage
  • Startup pages
  • Pinned tabs
  • Extensions

If Chrome resets your settings and you’re not signed in to Chrome, your settings will be reset to their defaults. If you’re signed in to Chrome, you’ll still see your customized settings.

Sometimes programs will keep trying to change your settings. If this is the case, Chrome will continue to reset your browser settings every time it launches. You'll always be able to see your customized settings by signing into Chrome.

Apparently, as per this thread here, recent versions of Chrome (but not Chromium) seem to be doing some extra 'unwarranted protection' and reset everything without asking the user.

Is it possible to find out what part of settings (files, folders) are causing this error?

  • To ignore those parts and/ or
  • Select parts of User Profile data that will migrate without error?

Thing's I'd like to transfer migrate for sure:

  • Bookmarks (I think this syncs via Google Profile)
  • History (No idea what syncs - I use months & years of history to traceback and recall things)
  • Passwords (partially syncs via Google Profile)
  • Cookies (Not synced) (Important for forums I frequent)
  • Extensions (synced but No Data or Settings synced)
    - Extension Configs/ Settings + Extension Local Stored Data (Very important)
    • (Especially, in extensions like Session Buddy I have stored stuff for few years now)

(Some of this is easily synced via Google account but all of it does not pass over)

Some individual, but older information on transferring/ copying specific items:

Extensions:

..\AppData\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Extensions

Cookies:

C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Local Storage

%localappdata%\Google\Chrome\User Data\Default\Cookies

chrome://chrome/settings/cookies

Some examples of this not working or people facing issues here:

Some Outdated methods: I found some relevant methods, articles & answers which I have used before. I believe they are outdated now, given that Chrome has changed how it works with/ locks down User Profiles.

On Windows XP - Change monitor resolution based on which user is logged in?

In Windows XP Professional, each of our family members are listed as icons at startup. Is there a way to have the system change the monitor resolution based on the family member? For example, if 'Dad' is clicked have it render 1028 x 768, if 'Mom' logs in have the monitor resolution set to 800 x 600. If 'Boy' logs in have the resolution set to 1280×1024 etc...

I am following the instructions on this site for Grails installation, but am not able to write to /etc/profile like it instructs.

sudo echo ‘JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun’ >> /etc/profile

Instead, I get this error:

Why am I not able to write to the file even using sudo?

how to remotely open an URL in Firefox in a specific profile?

I have several instances of Firefox with several different profiles running. Among them profiles with the names "software" and "test".

I am trying to open an URL from a bash script to have it open in profile "test", like this:

firefox -P "test" http://www.example.org/

However that opens it in profile "software" anyway. Any ideas?

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.8) Gecko/20100308 Iceweasel/3.5.8 (like Firefox/3.5.8)

No, it is not a permissions problem, all my profile directories are perfectly under my permissions:

root@przehyba:~/.mozilla# ls -ld firefox/
drwx------ 13 miernik miernik 4096 Mar 11 09:15 firefox/

How to move your Windows User Profile to another drive in Windows 8

I like to have my user folder on a different drive (D:) than my OS is (C:). Reading the following post I decided to give it a try.

All went quite well, untill I found out that my Windows 8 Apps won't execute anymore (other than that I didn't noticed any problems). My apps do work, while using an account that isn't moved.

In the eventviewer I've found error messages like these:

App <Microsoft.MicrosoftSkyDrive> crashed with an unhandled Javascript exception. App details are as follows: Display Name:<SkyDrive>, AppUserModelId: <microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft.MicrosoftSkyDrive> Package Identity:<microsoft.microsoftskydrive_16.4.4204.712_x64__8wekyb3d8bbwe> PID:<4452>. ms-appx://microsoft.microsoftskydrive/modernskydrive/product/skydrive/App.html:216:13 Anonymous function(object)

Using ProcMon, I see a lot of access denied messages, like these:

Date & Time: 12-9-2012 9:32:20
Event Class: File System
Operation: CreateFile
Result: ACCESS DENIED
Path: D:\Users\John\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe\Settings\settings.dat
TID: 2520
Duration: 0.0000149
Desired Access: Read Data/List Directory, Write Data/Add File, Read Control
Disposition: OpenIf
Options: Sequential Access, Synchronous IO Non-Alert, No Compression
Attributes: N
ShareMode: None
AllocationSize: 0

Any idea how to solve this?

I noticed that the app folders e.g.: D:\Users\john\AppData\Local\Packages\microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe had a different owner than the old profile folder had. Old profile folder had john as owner where my new profile folder had the Administrators group as owner. Changing this didn't help unfortunately.

Windows 7: Migrate user profile to another computer manually

Here is simple task I'm trying to achieve:

I need to migrate user profile from old PC to new PC.

What I got:

  • Hard drive from old Windows 7 PC
  • New Windows 7 PC

I can't use Windows Easy Transfer because old PC is gone.

What I've done (on new PC):

  • Created new_user account
  • Logged in as new_user to initialize profile
  • Rebooted
  • Logged in as Administrator and copied profile from old PC's hard drive to C:\Users\old_profile
  • Changed permissions of C:\Users\old_profile: Added new_user account with Full Access
  • Changed new_user's ProfileImagePath key in registry: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList] to C:\Users\old_profile
  • Loaded hive C:\Users\old_profile\ntuser.dat and added new_user account with Full Access
  • Rebooted
  • Logged in as new_user

From the first look things were in place, but when I click any document on the Desktop - it prompts "File not found / Invalid location". When I try to click Start->Computer it prompts "explorer.exe Access Denied". EDIT: I can read and run any file from Task Manager, except for explorer.exe

An old PC had only C: drive and all files were kept only under profile directory.

Did I forget something?

Thanks.

Why do I have three My Documents folders?

I'm trying to fix my profile on Windows 7. Currently

  • %USERPROFILE% points to C:\Users\myUsername
  • My Documents is also at C:\Users\myUsername
  • \\profileServer\profiles$\myUsername has TWO "My Documents" folders
  • Neither of these folders contain what's in C:\Users\myUsername\My Documents
  • Navigating to %USERPROFILE% in Windows Explorer displays two copies of everything, one local and one copy from the server.
  • Programs use sort of a toss up between C:\Users\myUsername\My Documents or one of the two My Documents on profileServer.

According to our sysadmins, My Documents is supposed to point to the profile server, but other folders should be local.

How can I fix this so I have ONE copy of everything, with My Documents pointing to \\profileServer\profiles$\myUsername\Documents and everything else local?

To be honest, I don't understand why this is so difficult and confusing. For example, why does Windows allow displaying two folders with the same name in the same directory?

And why does inputting C:\Users\myUsername and %USERPROFILE% into Windows Explorer produce two different results? They should be identical.

Some screenshots

My directory on the profileServer

My local user directory, C:\Users\myUsername

Navigating to %USERPROFILE% in Windows Explorer

Showing that %USERPROFILE% is set to a local directory

How do I force Windows 7 to create a new domain profile with same name as an existing one?

I had a corrupt user profile (let's call it bob) affecting xslx files for Excel on a Windows 7 Pro x64 workstation. I verified that the issue was not present on other profiles on the same machine.

I made a new user, temp. I logged in with the local administrator account and took ownership of bob's profile folder. I then copied everything in this folder except for ntuser.dat, ntuser.dat.log and ntuser.ini to the new user temp's profile folder. I then logged in as temp to make sure that the files were there. They were. My Excel file open issue and icon association was resolved on this user profile.

Next I deleted bob's profile folder after I made a copy of it to C:\temp for restore purposes. I then logged in as domain\bob, and Windows 7 put me into a temporary profile.

Making a local user with the name bob won't work for me here because the security context for that account won't point to the domain.

What do I do now to allow Windows 7 to forget I ever had a domain user called bob? I want to be able to log back in as this user and want the computer treat it like the first time they are logging in and make me a new profile. I will then move profile files over manually to synchronize things.

My user has a standard domain profile and not a roaming one.

I thought this was a relatively straightforward process, but I can't seem to figure out what I do differently when I am dealing with domain level accounts.

How can I limit the usage time for an user profile in Windows?

I have 4 kids so the battle for time on the living room computer never ceases, I am also implementing an attempt at some level of control over how much time the kids get based on their behavior etc during the week. Ideally I would like to be able to set each profile up to have only a certain allotment of time, say 2 hours that they can use and once that two hours is nearly up it warns them and once complete it automatically logs them out.

I know the family control stuff can limit the time frames during which they can login but it does not seem to allow this quantity based control I am looking for...

Any other options in the market that you know of?

Firefox: Using multiple instances with different profiles?

Let's say, Firefox's instance is running with profile 1. Is it now possible, to start a new Firefox instance with profile 2?

Normally, when Firefox is already running, no new instance is created. Instead, just a new browser window is opened.

Note: By saying "profile", I'm referring to Firefox user profiles.

Can't login with new local users in windows 10

I just upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. I would like to create a new local admin and remove the administrator privileges from my main user. I created the new user but when I try to login I get the following error.

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in." "User profile can not be loaded"

I do not see a folder for that user in c:\Users or a profile entry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList

Nothing is jumping out at me in the event log either.

I created the user with the following steps.

  1. Setting
  2. Accounts,
  3. Family & other users
  4. Other users
  5. "Add someone else to this PC"
  6. "The person I want to add doesn't have an email address"
  7. "Add a user without a Microsoft account"
  8. Enter the user name and password
  9. Click next.

At this point I have a new (non administrator) user listed in the "Other users" list but can not login as that user. I tried making that user an administrator and that did not help. I have tried creating several new users and none of them work.
