I am thinking of getting a PCI-E usb3.0 card for my computer. Do I need special USB3 sticks and cables to harness the speed of USB3? Will my USB(2?) stick work at USB3 speed?

How many MB/sec can I expect copying to USB 3.0 enclosure with SATA drive?

I have a new laptop with USB 3.0 ports, and a new SATA 5200 rpm hard drive I just put into a new USB 3.0 enclosure.

I am copying my backups from the local hard drive to the new USB 3.0 hard drive/enclosure. It has settled at 26.1 MB/sec.

Is that the speed I should expect, or might something be wrong?

Why aren’t there any USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet adapters out there?

I’m looking for an adapter that will let me use a USB 3.0 port as a Gigabit Ethernet port. This is proving surprisingly hard to find! Is there some reason why this product is either unavailable or very obscure? Is there an online shop (US/Canada) where I can buy such an item?

Newegg, TigerDirect, NCIX, etc… don’t seem to carry such an item. I find this surprising since it will provide at least double the bandwidth—possibly quadruple—compared to a USB 2.0 Gigabit Ethernet adapter.

Will cases with front USB port support USB 3.0?

If a computer case has a USB port in the front, will it support USB 3.0 if my motherboard supports it? Or does the case vendor need to specifically mention USB 3 support? (BTW, I haven't seen such case yet.)

Speed comparison between USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and SATA and Firewire

Which external connection has the highest data throughput with respect to the headers used? I would appreciate a slowest to fastest list including USB 2.0, USB 3.0, FireWire 400, FireWire 800 and eSata considering bandwidth that is consumed by command and control (reducing the data bandwidth availability).

Using USB 3.0 to speed up transfer between USB 2.0 devices?

I've noticed that transfers between USB 2.0 drives are usually very slow. From what I understand, this is because all USB 2.0 devices connected to the same USB 2.0-host share the same 480Mb/s of bandwidth.

Is it possible to speed this up by using USB 3.0, ie connecting both drives to a USB 3.0 controller (like a USB 3.0 ExpressCard adapter)?

In other words, do USB2 devices get the full, unshared bandwidth each on a USB3 host?

Is there any way, besides reading the product manual, to determine which type/class of USB ports are present in my computer casing?

Can this obtained by visual confirmation, reading the device properties or searching for a registry key? If not, how can I do so?

How do I identify what is my 'Intel Chipset' , on a Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit system?


This is actually a follow-up question to

USB 3.0 ports function as USB 2.0 ports on Windows 7 -- trying to fix via DeviceMgr & downloads from Intel website

The specs for my computer are: HP Pavilion dv7-6b32us Laptop Core i7 2670QM 2.20GHz, 4GB DDR3, 640GB HDD ,Win 7 Prem.

As suggested at the previous Superuser question-and-answer, I tried going to the Intel website via this link. (click to see)

There are 4 downloads being offered by the website, but how do I determine which of these 4 offered downloads is the appropriate one for me to download?

More to the point... how do I identify what is my 'Intel Chipset'?

I did find something called 'Intel Chipset Identification Utility' via

, but, it's stated as being only compatible with 32-bit operating systems. I am on Windows7-home-premium-64bit.

Status Report#1

Sigh... well, a slight update on the situation, and this corresponds to the preceding thread located here, too.

None of the ideas so far worked, despite spending HOURS trying to get the USB3.0 ports to actually operate at USB3.0 speeds.

I mention this as a warning to others that might be having a similar issue-- solving the problem could potentially eat up a LOT of time.


Status Report#2

Well, I haven't thrown in the towel altogether, but...

Pursuant to the answer provided by @Chris-C in this thread, USB 3.0 ports function as USB 2.0 ports on Windows 7 -- trying to fix via DeviceMgr & downloads from Intel website , I've discovered something terribly distressing.

Specifically, I was told:

NO USB 3.0 support on the Intel 6-series chipset

And, yes. I found out that my system uses a Generation-6 chipset.

Hopefully, people that have this similar issue can be made aware of this limitation by this post.

But... why did Hewlett Packard include USB3.0 ports (I know they're USB3.0 because they have a blue color to their interior) IN THE FIRST PLACE?? Seriously, if you can give me an answer (in a comment), please do!

As far as the underlying concerns go, I'm still not quite giving up. At least not yet.

How can I check whether USB3.0 UASP mode is enabled in Linux?

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 15.04 (3.19.0-21-generic) and an external USB3.0 2.5" SATA HDD enclosure which claims that it supports UASP mode (this model by StarTech). I have no problems mounting the drive or reading/writing to it.

I'd like to be able to confirm the following:

  1. That the device itself actually supports UASP
  2. Whether my chipset also supports UASP
  3. Whether the device is using UASP when I mount it

Whereabouts can I find this information?

What does the BIOS setting XHCI Pre-Boot Mode do?

I have a BIOS setting called XHCI Pre-Boot Mode. If I have this enabled USB devices which aren't plugged in at boot are never recognised, if I set it to Disabled then USB devices work normally. The brief BIOS description says "Enable this option if you need USB3.0 support in DOS." Which I don't, but it also says "Please note that XHCI controller will be disabled if you set this item as Disabled." So does that mean that USB3 is disabled with this option? Here's a picture of the screen:

UPDATE I subsequent BIOS update seems to have fixed this issue in that USB devices work even when not plugged in at boot with this option Enabled.

How to add USB 3.0 port to your laptop

What are the options to add one or more USB 3.0 port to a laptop? The only way I seen so far are USB 3 expresscard adapters but all of these adapters stick out quite a lot from the laptop and have power/bandwidth limitations.

Update: after some more research I found there are smaller 1 port expresscard adapters that do not stick out of the laptop at all after plugging in. Looks like these are not available in US yet but I'm sure it's coming soon.

How to measure actual USB3 port speed?

Not all USB3 ports are created equal.

I have a friend who develops embedded hardware that interfaces with USB chipsets. He told me that most USB chipsets that are slightly faster than USB2 (480 Mbit/s) are labeled as USB3 even if they fall far short of the 5Gb/s theoretical limit.

I'd like to transfer uncompressed video over USB3. According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncompressed_video#Storage_and_Data_Rates_for_Uncompressed_Video 24bit @ 1080i @ 30fps requires 1.39Gbps. How do I measure the actual transfer speed supported by a USB3 port?

Most manufacturers don't mention the actual USB3 speed and I don't have anything to connect to the USB3 port that will transfer at speeds even close to the theoretical speed of 5Gbps. I will later on, when I get the live uncompressed video stream, but I'd like to test the USB3 port before buying this expensive video streaming equipment.

How seriously does cable length affect USB 3.0 transfer speeds?

Recently I've been thinking of upgrading my computer with some USB 3.0 ports. However, the problem is my computer is some ways away from my desk so that would mean I would need a long cable, approximately 10ft or so.

My question is how badly does a long cable (10ft for example) impact the transfer rates of USB 3.0? At what point will the USB controller revert back to say, high speed mode as opposed to super speed mode? What have you guys experienced?

Would USB 3 make a difference for a USB 2 5400 RPM drive?

I've got a USB 2 5400 RPM external HD. I'm thinking of getting a new computer with USB 3 ports.

If I'm currently getting read/write speeds from the external HD on USB 2 of roughly 30 mb/s (both read and write), then would upgrading to USB 3 make a difference? Since USB 2 is roughly 480 mbps (60 mb/s), which is more than the 30 mb/s I'm getting now, then won't it technically make no difference at all?

Specifically, the drive I have is this very popular one.
