I want to manage the updates of my Linux system in a similar fashion as Git does it, by being able to move back and forth within "revisions". How could I do that?

My Windows 8 machine is going to restart shortly...
I have tried a few techniques such as shutdown /a which is not having much luck.
Short of pausing the Windows Update service, is there anyway to stop this restart from happening?

It did reset!!! My battery went critical and it turned itself off, I turned it back on (out of suspend) when it was plugged in, I logged in and the first thing it did was automatically restart - closing my open tabs in Chrome :(

I have a Dell laptop issued by my employer, and I always find it a real pain to search for, download and maintain their drivers. It baffles me that there does not seem to be a nice way (product, website, ...) to just download the stuff you need, without hassle. The same goes for the other Windows based laptops in my direct environment.
Are there any (preferably free) automated solutions available? Or do you have a nice workflow - other than searching the manufacturers website - to help smoothing this process?

Whenever there's a Safari or a Quicktime update the Apple Software Updater pops up asking if want to update. This is fine, however it also auto-checks a box that says 'Install Quicktime + iTunes' that I have to uncheck. I know this is only a minor annoyance but it's happened so often that it really bugs me. Is there a way to say "I don't ever want iTunes" and therefore save me tens of man seconds a year?
This is for a Windows machine.

I installed the latest version of Cygwin with a number of packages.
I soon realised that I need more packages (such as wget, etc) and I couldn't find a way to install the new packages without running the set up again and reinstall everything from scratch.
What I'm looking for is the equivalent of apt-get on Cygwin (if such a thing exists).

Given I have spotify installed on my ubuntu system
When i upgrade using:
sudo apt-get update
Then I get this error:
W: An error occurred during the signature verification. The repository is not updated and the previous index files will be used. Is it possible to configure Notepad++ to stop checking for new versions each time it is run?
Every time Nodepad++ is started a dialog pops with:

Every time I install a NVIDIA driver the files get unzipped into C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver. I assume the setup copies the files to another location and this unzipped data is only useful for the installation process.
Are those files safe to delete after the installation completes?
If so, I wonder why NVIDIA doesn't delete the files automatically. I still have the files from 4 patches ago.

Google Chrome auto-updates itself and its extensions. I don't want Chrome to automatically update itself every time it is run; I only want it to update when it asks for confirmation, like Firefox does. Is this possible?

I often find that there are updates for Windows. Most - but not all - of them are automatically checked, even though they are all declared as important.

Is there a way like in Linux how you update ALL your software a way to also update ALL your Windows software at the same time? Or just to check and see which applications are outdated and need to be manually updated.
I know mac has MacUpdater for example and Linux uses Yum and Apt-get.

Anyway here is my problem. I'm currently on beta channel (Firefox 6) which was recently upgraded and broke some extensions. Now I gather those extensions will be upgraded in the future and they'll restore to working order. Is there a way for me to disable further beta updates and keep my Firefox on a stable channel without losing my settings and extensions? Is there a way to backup Firefox 6 or disable updating to a beta version (but keep the updating to a stable versions)?

To search and download a package missed from Cygwin I need to run setup.exe GUI each time, click many times and do other boring things.
Is there a way to do the same from Cygwin's command line directly? Like apt-get tools do.
