Is it also possible to update via a SELECT
? I have a temporary table containing the values, and would like to update another table using those values. Perhaps something like this:

I need to update this table in SQL Server 2005 with data from its 'parent' table, see below:

I have a table that has several nullable integer columns. This is undesirable for several reasons, so I am looking to update all nulls to 0 and then set these columns to NOT NULL
. Aside from changing nulls to 0
, data must be preserved.
I am looking for the specific SQL syntax to alter a column (call it ColumnA
) to "not null
". Assume the data has been updated to not contain nulls.

Is there to way write a T-SQL command to just make it sleep for a period of time? I am writing a web service asynchronously and I want to be able to run some tests to see if the asynchronous pattern is really going to make it more scalable. In order to "mock" an external service that is slow, I want to be able to call a SQL server with a script that runs slowly, but isn't actually processing a ton of stuff.

We all know that to select all columns from a table, we can use
SELECT * FROM tableA
Is there a way to exclude column(s) from a table without specifying all the columns?
SELECT * [except columnA] FROM tableA
The only way that I know is to manually specify all the columns and exclude the unwanted column. This is really time consuming so I'm looking for ways to save time and effort on this, as well as future maintenance should the table has more/less columns.

I have to update a field with a value which is returned by a join of 3 tables.
Example:

I want to have a unique constraint on a column which I am going to populate with GUIDs. However, my data contains null values for this columns. How do I create the constraint that allows multiple null values?
Here's an example scenario. Consider this schema:

I'll use a concrete, but hypothetical, example.
Each Order normally has only one line item:
Orders:
OrderGUID OrderNumber

But occasionally there will be an order with two line items:

What I really want is to have SQL Server just pick one, as it will be good enough:

If I get adventurous, I might show the user, an ellipsis to indicate that there's more than one:

MPT-9931-8A 32 differential girdlespring
KSG-0619-81 5 panametric fan, ...
So the question is how to either
- eliminate "duplicate" rows
- only join to one of the rows, to avoid duplication
First attempt
My first naive attempt was to only join to the "TOP 1" line items:
SELECT Orders.OrderNumber, LineItems.Quantity, LineItems.Description
FROM Orders
INNER JOIN (
SELECT TOP 1 LineItems.Quantity, LineItems.Description
FROM LineItems
WHERE LineItems.OrderID = Orders.OrderID) LineItems2
ON 1=1
But that gives the error:
The column or prefix 'Orders' does not
match with a table name or alias name
used in the query.
Presumably because the inner select doesn't see the outer table.

I have a stored procedure that returns 80 columns, and 300 rows. I want to write a select that gets 2 of those columns. Something like
SELECT col1, col2 FROM EXEC MyStoredProc 'param1', 'param2'
When I used the above syntax I get the error:
"Invalid Column Name".
I know the easiest solution would be to change the stored procedure, but I didn't write it, and I can't change it.
Is there any way to do what I want?
I could make a temp table to put the results in, but because there are 80 columns so I would need to make an 80 column temp table just to get 2 columns. I wanted to avoid tracking down all the columns that are returned.
I tried using WITH SprocResults AS ....
as suggested by Mark, but I got 2 errors
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'EXEC'.
Incorrect syntax near ')'.
I tried declaring a table variable and I got the following error
Insert Error: Column name or number of supplied values does not match table definition
If I try
SELECT * FROM EXEC MyStoredProc 'param1', 'param2'
I get the error :
Incorrect syntax near the keyword 'exec'.

Which method provides the best performance when removing the time portion from a datetime field in SQL Server?
a) select DATEADD(dd, DATEDIFF(dd, 0, getdate()), 0)
or
b) select cast(convert(char(11), getdate(), 113) as datetime)
The second method does send a few more bytes either way but that might not be as important as the speed of the conversion.
Both also appear to be very fast, but there might be a difference in speed when dealing with hundreds-of-thousands or more rows?
Also, is it possible that there are even better methods to get rid of the time portion of a datetime in SQL?

Scenario:
Let's say I have two tables, TableA and TableB. TableB's primary key is a single column (BId), and is a foreign key column in TableA.
In my situation, I want to remove all rows in TableA that are linked with specific rows in TableB: Can I do that through joins? Delete all rows that are pulled in from the joins?
DELETE FROM TableA
FROM
TableA a
INNER JOIN TableB b
ON b.BId = a.BId
AND [my filter condition]
Or am I forced to do this:
DELETE FROM TableA
WHERE
BId IN (SELECT BId FROM TableB WHERE [my filter condition])
The reason I ask is it seems to me that the first option would be much more effecient when dealing with larger tables.

What is the main purpose of using CROSS APPLY?
I have read (vaguely, through posts on the Internet) that cross apply
can be more efficient when selecting over large data sets if you are partitioning. (Paging comes to mind)
I also know that CROSS APPLY
doesn't require a UDF as the right-table.
In most INNER JOIN
queries (one-to-many relationships), I could rewrite them to use CROSS APPLY
, but they always give me equivalent execution plans.
Can anyone give me a good example of when CROSS APPLY
makes a difference in those cases where INNER JOIN
will work as well?
