jar not loaded. See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class

I am running a Maven project which is also a dynamic web project. I have used all spring libraries in maven. I created web.xml, but when I start my tomcat 7 server I am getting the following message:

INFO: validateJarFile(C:\Users\mibvzd0\workspace\.metadata\.plugins\

See Servlet Spec 2.3, section 9.7.2. Offending class: javax/servlet/Servlet.class

I tried deleting the servlet from webapp/lib, but it didn't work. Let me know what should be done in my case.

Tomcat 7: How to set initial heap size correctly?

I was trying to adjust initial heap size of a tomcat 7 (CentOS, java -version: 1.6.0_25-b06) instance by adding the following line to catalina.sh:

export CATALINA_OPTS="-Xms=512M -Xmx=1024M"

Starting up tomcat fails and logs the following message to catalina.out:

Invalid initial heap size: -Xms=512m
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

What is wrong with these options?

Cannot Undeploy a web-app completely in Tomcat 7

I am using the manager app in tomcat 7, and i am unable to undeploy an application completely.

It says FAIL - Unable to delete [F:\apache-tomcat-7.0.33\webapps\balaji]. The continued presence of this file may cause problems.

I read somewhere its because of some phenomenon called memory leak , and if we fix it the issue will be solved.

Can anyone tell me what is this memory leak in tomcat 7, and how can we fix it ?? I am using windows 7 OS. If i am able to fix it will my un-deploy and re-deploy process run smooth ?

HOWTO set the context path of a web application in Tomcat 7.0

I know that I can rename my webapp (or it's WAR file) to ROOT but this is a terrible way to do it, IMHO. Now I checked out the tomcat doc & it says

It is NOT recommended to place elements directly in the server.xml file

So I tried doing it another method that it suggested.

Individual Context elements may be explicitly defined: In an individual file at /META-INF/context.xml inside the application files.

So I created a /META-INF/context.xml with the following code,

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<Context antiJARLocking="true" path="/"/>

But after deploying when I restarted the server it still failed to load the context at "/", it still loaded it with the "/<WEB_APP_NAME>"

Any pointers helpful.

Tomcat7 bind to port 80 fails in Ubuntu 14.04LTS

I've got a problem with my tomcat7 installation on a newly updated Ubuntu system. Ever since the update to 14.04 LTS, tomcat refuses to start on port 80 with an error that I cannot solve, nor find anything on how to fix it:

The thing is, I've done exactly what I've done in previous Ubuntus (was running 12.04 LTS), in short, edited the server.xml to port 80 and also changed authbind in /etc/default/tomcat7 to yes, so basically everything you have to do to run tomcat on port 80.

Doing those steps on a 12.04LTS works fine, just on the 14.04LTS it now throws this "file or directory not found" error.

Also when upgrading a 12.04LTS (on which tomcat runs fine on port 80) to 14.04LTS, it suddenly throws the error above, while all configuration are identical to what worked in 12.04LTS.

I hope anyone can help me fix this problem.

At least one JAR was scanned for TLDs yet contained no TLDs

I keep getting this on tomcat 7.30 (eclipse juno)

At least one JAR was scanned for TLDs yet contained no TLDs. Enable debug logging for this logger for a complete list of JARs that were scanned but no TLDs were found in them. Skipping unneeded JARs during scanning can improve startup time and JSP compilation time.

Well I went at conf\logging.properties and turned all INFO to FINE and uncommented the line

# To see debug messages in TldLocationsCache, uncomment the following line:
org.apache.jasper.compiler.TldLocationsCache.level = FINE

And I still see At least one JAR was scanned for TLDs yet contained no TLDs. Enable debug logging...

So what should I do to see those jars ?

Logs location :

The tomcat logs are in $CATALINA_HOME\logs\catalina.yyyy-mm-dd.log. Eclipse prints them in the console - if you want to have your console logged you must

In the servers tab, double-click on the Tomcat Server. You will get a screen called Overview. Click on "Open launch configuration". Click on the "Common" tab. Towards the bottom of the screen you can check the "File" checkbox and then specify a file that can be used to log your console (catalina.out) output. Finally, restart the Tomcat server.

How do I increase memory on Tomcat 7 when running as a Windows Service?

I am trying to run Tomcat 7 as a Windows Service (XP and Windows 7).

I see places to set the -Xmx and -Xms jvm args in catalina.bat, but I'm not sure how to do it when using $CATALINA_HOME/bin/service.bat install service-name. I looked around but the best I could find was that I needed to update windows registry key, though I'm not sure which one to edit.

I'm hoping there's an easier way, is there?

Update: I'm not using the windows installer mainly because I'm running multiple instances of tomcat on the same machine but with different ports (for reasons I'd rather not go into here). If I can use the installer with multiple instances using different ports, then I'd like to know how, but regardless, is it possible to do increase the memory on a tomcat windows service without the UI tools that come with the installer?

Tomcat WebSocketServlet and Google Guice

I have a webapp which requires the usage of Tomcat 7 web sockets.

In this webapp all standard Servlets (those extending javax.servlet.http.HttpServlet) work nicely (and correctly) with Google Guice. To make my Servlet work with Guice handlers I simply:

  1. decorate the servlet with @Singleton
  2. declare private Provider for MyHandler instance & generate a setter which is marked for injection
  3. decorate the Servlet's constructor with @Inject

Example to demonstrate points above:

@Singleton
public class MyServlet extends HttpServlet {

    private Provider<MyHandler> myHandler;

    @Inject
    MyServlet() {
    }

    @Override
    protected void service(..) throws ServletException { ... }

    @Inject
    public void setMyHandler(Provider<MyHandler> myHandler) {
        this.myHandler = myHandler;
    }

    ...
}

How can one call the same Guice handler, above called myHandler from a WebSocketServlet?

I can't adopt the same style as in the standard servlet use case because, rather than having a Singleton servlet as in the case of the standard servlets, each WebSocket communication results in an instance extending MessageInbound; then the appropriate method that would call MyHandler is called from a method (e.g. onOpen or onClose) within the MessageInbound instance; not from a method within an HttpServlet instance as MyServlet above.

What did I try? I did try some (conceptually wrong) solutions such as calling the websocket-servlet's handlers from within the MessageInbound instance; that of course results in scoping problems lower down the Guice stack trace. What is the conceptually correct way of doing this?

Maven - deploy webapp to tomcat before JUnit test

I have webapp which provides web service. I want to perform JUnit tests with SoapUI to check if this service is working properly.
But to test web service application has to be deployed to my Tomcat 7 server.

I have no idea how to configure maven to build war, then deploy it to tomcat (ideally: to run separate tomcat instance for this) and then to run JUnit tests.
I will appreciate any help.

I am using maven 2.2.1

Invalid byte tag in constant pool - Tomcat7, .war, JDK incompatibilty?

I tried upgrading to Java 8. When starting our tomcat7 server, with a Java 7-compiled .war file, I get the mysteriously error below.

Should I expect this to work? This post says tomcat 7 should work with 1.6 and up. I can't tell if Tomcat is to blame, or the .war. Switching out different Java versions I get:

  • JDK 7.45 installed - works (same version used to compile .war)
  • JDK 7.55 installed - fails as below
  • JDK 8.05 installed - fails as below

Is tomcat to blame, or the .war?
