Whenever I view a folder which contains .MP4 (H.264) video files in large icon view (shows thumbnails), Windows 7's Explorer crashes. Explorer loads for a few seconds, the green progress bar shows up, and then boom!, Explorer crashes. The thumbnails are not shown before crashing. Does anyone know how to fix this?
I tried setting Folder options to 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' (disables thumbnails) on the same folder with MP4 (H.264) video files and Explorer doesn't crash if the MP4 thumbnails aren't shown. I tried testing in other folders containing other video formats (with 'Always show icons, never thumbnails' set to off) like .AVI/Xvid, without an MP4/H.264 file, and Windows Explorer shows the thumbnails fine without crashing.
I have not currently experienced problems with other formats, only MP4/H.264. The only media players that I have installed are KMPlayer and VLC Media Player which both do not install external codecs, AFAIK. The only external codec I have installed is CoreAVC, but I have been using CoreAVC for months (KMPlayer+CoreAVC is one of the first things I installed in Windows 7) without any problems (this issue just arose a few days ago).
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.
Note: I prefer a solution that will not end up disabling video thumbnails for MP4 files. I still would like to see MP4 video thumbnails, if possible. If the video files themselves are problematic, I reckon Explorer should not crash and just not show the thumbnails.

Is it possible to prevent thumbnails from being generated on a specific disk drive?
This would be useful for several reasons, one being performance (on optical drives), the other privacy (some information shouldn't be cached forever in an obscure location, e.g. scans of bank statements).
I know there's an option to turn off all thumbnail generation, but that is an overkill.

When I open my video folder, the thumbnails aren't showing. Instead, the default VLC icon was being displayed. Other files and image thumbnails are being displayed properly, only the videos have problems.
The "always show icons, never thumbnails" option is unchecked.
What could be the problem?
I have also installed the K-lite codec pack, I tried clearing the thumbnail cache, but it's not working.

How can I make a simple capture from a video. Preferably from the command line?
Idea: take 9 snapshots for 9 even placed (on the timeline) times, and save them as JPGs
Example:
Movie length = 10 min
T1= snapshot of 1 min
T2= snapshot of 2 min
......
T9= snapshot of 9 min

Is there some way to get explorer to generate thumbnails without actually having to navigate and scroll through every folder?
All I could get was a command prompt script that would load an explorer window for all subfolders, however only images that were visible would have thumbnails created.

Image files used to show as thumbnails in the explorer window, and a larger preview could be seen in the preview pane (alt+p).
Now for some unknown reason, I just see a default image icon in both the explorer view and the preview pane. I have to double click an image to view it. Any ideas on what setting changed that removed the thumbnails and previews?

In Windows 7 pressing Alt+Tab shows the transparent windows (Aero) effect. The screen change is distracting while I'm trying to figure out which window to switch to based on the thumbnail preview (which is sufficient for me most of the time). Is there any way to turn off the Aero Peek effect or delay its activation to something like 6 seconds or so?
On the Taskbar the Aero Peek effect is brought up on-demand when I mouse over the actual thumbnails. This behavior is not an issue and if I have a choice, I do not want it to be turned off.

I am using Windows 8.1 with Windows Explorer. The image cache ("thumbs.db") is created when I visit a folder containing video, photo, or other such files. I have a problem with this because I have multiple folders with large videos and photos that are constantly changing. Every time I open a folder containing these files I have to wait several seconds until the thumbnail cache is created.
One workaround would be to disable the thumbnail cache. But I like to see thumbnails so this is not a solution for me. Instead, I would like to call a batch or another program every x-seconds that creates the Windows thumbnails recursively. I could then open the folders without delay.
How can I accomplish this?

I have a DVD filled with about 3.5GB of large picture files (jpgs about 4mb each).
Every time I insert this disc into my computer and select the drive from explorer, it will lock up the explorer indefinitely.
I realise that it's trying to browse the whole DVD and is probably trying to generate thumbnails, so I turned off 'Cache Thumbnails' and also removed
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\ShellImagePreview
Windows cannot seem to leave this DVD alone so that I can use the files. It is determined to read them all before I can do anything! Arrg!

So how to generate thumbnails for these containers?
I know that the install of "DivX Plus Tech Preview: MKV on Windows 7" does it for MKV. But I think that only some registry changes are really necessary and I want it for other containers.
If it's possible to avoiding the install of (always bloated) codecs packs it would be nice... Maybe only installing ffdshow or essential and separated codecs.
(some time ago I have try reg files for vista without success...)
Update:
I have installed Win7codecs & tweaked a little its settings and I got almost everything I want. (I have also re-installed the relevant part of the divx plus tech preview to get something else than an all black preview for MKV)
Issues that I still want to resolve:
- Find a cleaner & lighter method
- Almost all my rmvb and mov files got an all black preview (installing real media/quick time alternative doesn't help, is it the same with the officials?)
- With almost all containers (avi, mkv, ogm, mpg), I have (few) random files that don't get the preview. I could play them in WMP or another player and don't have found a pattern in the codecs used. All wmv, flv and mp4 have previews but I have less files in these containers.
(I clear my thumbnails cache to test them)
More generally I would like to understand how windows handle the containers & codecs to generate the previews.
And a software that let me choose arbitrarily the pictures previewed would be convenient too

I am using LibreOffice 4.0 on Windows 7 and I have noticed that it saves files (for example Writer) with a preview. (The icon of the file shows what's inside it, it looks like a page).
How do I turn it off? I want to to be a normal Writer icon. (A bit like MS Office does, it saves the file with the default icon).
How can I do this?

Kind of a weird question I guess :p Was just curious to if there is a way I can preload all thumbs.db files in directory (and its sub-directories) so that when I visit those folders later in explorer or media center, the thumbnails are already loaded.
Not so important for images, but would be handy to do once in a while for folders with lots of video files that seldom changes.
