How can I disable the feature where OSX launches iTunes when external speakers are connected?

There is that feature where iTunes gets automatically launched on OSX when an external speakers are connected (Bluetooth or 3.5mm jack headphones).

I happen to prefer another application to listen to the music. So, is it possible to disable iTunes auto launch? Or reconfigure it to launch some other app?

I know. I am pushing it, but maybe I can get it to launch my favourite radio web site? ;-)

Cheers!

How to Record Both Mic Audio and Speakers while using headset

I'm trying to record my screen with sound at the same time, but right now, my jack stopped working (it's with the red light) and I have to use a headset so that I can have sound on my Mac.

So my question is: Can I record my screen, my audio input (me babbling) and the supposed audio output that should come from speakers (that now its coming out from my headset).

Is there a way, Or is it just impossible?

VLC Sound boosting

VLC Media Player is one my favourite players. When I had a talk with my friends, they said that it will make damage with laptop speakers. They claim that VLC uses some boosting techniques that is behind the issue. Is it true?

Edit: After reading the answers.

It is better not to use VLC in laptops :( . Folks, can you please suggest any alternative to VLC.

How can I set up a house-wide sound system?

My house has 2 bedrooms, a living room and a studio (Room for a computer, shelves, etc., don't know how it's called in the US), each one with a RJ-45 connection (LAN, Internet). I want to install speakers in the living room and that they could accept input from every one of the rooms. How can this be done?

Sound only from the right speaker

I'm using S/PDIF and I only get sound from the right speaker plus the subwoofer.

I've checked the balance settings:

enter image description here

Adjusting #1 does nothing. Adjusting #2 affects the right speaker.

I've also tried:

  • Switch places for the speakers to make sure that both works
  • Switch the cables

Same thing. Only audio from the right speaker. So I'm quite certain that it's not a speaker problem but how windows sends the audio (or sound card problem).

Update

Here's the strange thing: My volume knob which comes with the speakers have a headphone (3,5mm) jack. If I connect my head pones to that jack I get stereo in them. Same thing if I connect my headphones to the front computer jack.

Are there a windows 8 setting which configures the soundcard to send audio as 5.1 or similar?

Update 2

I've bought a new sound card (Asus Xonar D2X). Almost the same thing. Now I only get sound from the left headphone.

I've also bought new speakers (Edifier). Same same.. :(

Update 3

If I connect my head phones to a 3,5mm souncard jack I get stereo.

enter image description here

Update 4

I've now tried with a "regular" cable from the computer to the speakers. I've made sure that a 2 speaker system is selected. Still no sound from the left speaker.

I've tried two different speaker systems and two different soundcards (the built in realtek card and my new PCIe asus one).

I've also had the same problem in windows 7 and windows 8.

Hence the only thing left is the mother board, right? But before I accept an answer how could the motherboard affect the sound in such way?

Update 5

Ubuntu and Fedora gives me the same errors when I try to boot them (burned a live cd for both):

Something like:

GPU Lockup switching to fbcon
[...]
PFIFO playlist update failed

So that makes it a bit hard to try the sound using linux.

Update 6

I tried the new speakers with my laptop and got the same result. So I tried my old speakers with the laptop and both works (seems like one of the speaker cords were loose, I had to wiggle it. I blame my son for that ;)).

The new speakers have red/white connector. And I tried to switch them resulting in the same speaker only getting sound. So the computer seems to send stereo all right.

Next test was to switch the speaker cables on from the bass unit. Then the sound shifted to the other speaker. So it seems like the hardware in the bass or the speaker connector is broke?

So all of this just seems like a circumstantial mess :( First that the old left speaker got played around with by my son (resulting in me buying new speakers which didn't work either). And then a new soundcard. Guess I'll go and return the new speakers then.

Thank you all for helping me, and sorry for not trying harder in the first place.

Update 7

Heh. I still get problems. Everything have now been switched and I find it hard to believe that my third pair of speakers are broken too.

Use all 5.1 speakers with a 2.1 audio source

I just bought a 5.1 surround sound speaker set for my computer in my bedroom. The rear speakers are next to me in bed while the front speakers are at the other end of the bed at my feet. While I enjoy the surround sound during movies that support 5.1 sound, I would like to have my rear speakers working when listening to podcasts, or other 2.1 channel sound. How can I do this? When I enable "Speaker Fill" in the Realtek Hd Audio manager the sound only comes out of the front and center speakers with a few background noises that come out the rear ones. But since my ears are closer to the rear speakers, I'd rather have the sound come out of them.

Let me know of any ideas!

Hmm seems like the only option is to set the rear speakers to "Front Speakers" and change it to stereo in the Realtek HD audio. But still that take alot of steps and it doesnt not use the center speaker Thanks

How to get headphones and speakers working at the same time?

I have a Gigabyte P55-UD3 motherboard which comes with a Realtek sound card and audio header for the front panel. My headset is permanently connected to the front panel (mic in, headphones in) and I also have speakers connected at the rear of the computer. What I want to achieve is that both the headphones and the speakers work at the same time.

On my old PC with Realtek, I was able to do this by clicking "Device advanced settings" in the Realtek HD Audio Manager and then clicking "Make front and rear output devices playback two different audio streams simultaneously" and then doing some reassigning of front/rear settings in the Realtek Audio Manager (can't remember the details).

But that doesn't seem to be working now - either the speakers play sounds or the headphones, not both at the same time.

To pose the question differently, Windows plays the sounds on the "default device". I'd like to make both headphones and the speakers kind of like the default devices.

Hook two computers to one speaker?

Is it OK to take the line-out from the audio card on two computers, hook them up to a y-adapter that finally goes to a single pair of speakers? I would just go ahead and try it, but don't want to blow up a sound card if it's a bad idea.

Thanks

Is there any difference between computer speakers and a hi-fi?

At my parents house I used my computer hooked up to my stereo, I got my sound through there. It always sounded much better than typical cheap little £20 computer speakers.

Now I have moved elsewhere and don't have my stereo and am thinking of what to do to replace it. I am not sure whether I will buy a new stereo or some very expensive specialised computer speakers.

I am wondering. Is there any actual difference in the way a standard stereo system and computer speakers handle the audio output of a computer?

Are computer speakers somehow specially setup to work well with the output?

Is there any difference at all between the two or is it just for space/lack of a stereo reasons that only a minority of people use their computer with a stereo?

edit- I mentioned the cheapy computer speakers just to say I haven't actually tried any good computer speakers yet. I recognise the obvious fact that some the £100+ ones I'm considering will be far better. The question is, would they be better than a stereo.

There appears to be a poltergeist in my speakers (no, really)

I've no idea if there's a suitable Stack Exchange for poltergeists. It appears to be software, hardware or virus related, so I thought I'd try here, seeing as Ghostbusters is just a film, so I can't call them.

I'm not going mad, and this isn't a joke.

There's what appears to be a radio stream coming out of my speakers, except I can only hear it when the volume knob is turned down to the min setting whilst the speakers are on, which makes no sense. Sometimes it's French, which also makes little to no sense.

The speakers are Logitech 5.1s, I forget the model number, and I'm running XP 64bit. If that makes a difference.

I'd suspect it could be some sort of crazy virus, but I've been randomly killing processes whilst the poltergeist is active and it hasn't killed it, so I'm not sure about that.

Once again, I'm perfectly sane and this really isn't a joke. Perhaps other people have had this problem but have been too afraid of the reaction to ask anyone (please don't have me committed to an insane asylum).

Googling for strange noises coming from speakers didn't really get me anywhere. Has anyone heard of a virus that can do this and affect the volume controls on the hardware in that way?
