Anyone have any experience with 3rd party SMTP server for windows (server 2003)? I would like to set one up so that the cruise control can send reports of nightly builds and SVN check-ins.
I would like the server to be lightweight and free (this will only be used for sending email)
I know windows server 2003 has a SMTP server built in, but this machine is a virtual machine and I can't give it access to an install CD.

These ports 465 and 587 are both used for sending mail (submitting mail) but what is the real difference between them?

Instead of relying on my host to send email, I was thinking of sending the messages though my Gmail account. The emails are personalized emails to the bands I play on my show. Is it possible to do?

I've read that by standard first part of e-mail is case sensitive, however I've tried to send e-mail to name@example.com
, Name@example.com
and NAME@example.com
- it has arrived in each case.
How do mail servers handles usernames? Is it possible to miss with case and that message wouldn't be delivered? Is it really very important to use exactly same letter case, as was written while registering when giving your e-mail address?

I have a lot of apps that send email. Sometimes it's one or two messages at a time. Sometimes it's thousands of messages.
In development, I usually test by substituting my own address for any recipient addresses. I'm sure that's what everybody else does, until they get fed up with it and find a better solution.
I was thinking about creating a dummy SMTP server that just catches the messages and dumps them in a SQLLite database, or an mbox file, or whatever.
But surely such a tool already exists? How do you test sending email?

I'm getting this error:
The remote certificate is invalid according to the validation procedure.
whenever I try to send e-mail using Gmail's SMTP server in my C# code.
Can someone point me to the right direction for a solution to this problem?

I am sending emails to users using Django through Google Apps.
When the user receives emails sent from the Django app, they are from:
do_not_reply@domain.com
when looking at all emails in the inbox, people see the email's sender as :
do_not_reply
or do_not_reply@domain.com
depending on the email client used
If I log into that "do_not_reply" account using the browser and Google Apps itself and then send an email to myself, the emails are from:
Dont Reply<do_not_reply@domain.com>
As a result, the name displayed for the email's sender in the inbox is:
Dont Reply
In Django, is there a way to attach a "name" to the email account being used to send emails?
I have reviewed Django's mail.py, but had no luck finding a solution
http://code.djangoproject.com/browser/django/trunk/django/core/mail.py?rev=5548
Using:
Django 1.1
Python 2.6
Ubuntu 9.1
settings.EMAIL_HOST = 'smtp.gmail.com'
Thanks

I have a C# application which emails out Excel spreadsheet reports via an Exchange 2007 server using SMTP. These arrive fine for Outlook users, but for Thunderbird and Blackberry users the attachments have been renamed as "Part 1.2".
I found this article which describes the problem, but doesn't seem to give me a workaround. I don't have control of the Exchange server so can't make changes there. Is there anything I can do on the C# end? I have tried using short filenames and HTML encoding for the body but neither made a difference.
My mail sending code is simply this:
public static void SendMail(string recipient, string subject, string body, string attachmentFilename)
{
SmtpClient smtpClient = new SmtpClient();
NetworkCredential basicCredential = new NetworkCredential(MailConst.Username, MailConst.Password);
MailMessage message = new MailMessage();
MailAddress fromAddress = new MailAddress(MailConst.Username);
// setup up the host, increase the timeout to 5 minutes
smtpClient.Host = MailConst.SmtpServer;
smtpClient.UseDefaultCredentials = false;
smtpClient.Credentials = basicCredential;
smtpClient.Timeout = (60 * 5 * 1000);
message.From = fromAddress;
message.Subject = subject;
message.IsBodyHtml = false;
message.Body = body;
message.To.Add(recipient);
if (attachmentFilename != null)
message.Attachments.Add(new Attachment(attachmentFilename));
smtpClient.Send(message);
}
Thanks for any help.

How can I get SMTP to work on a Windows 7 development box? I used to just be able to turn on the IIS SMTP server on Windows XP. Is SMTP not included with Windows 7? If so, what can I use instead as a free relay mechanism?

any tips on testing email sending? Other than maybe creating a gmail account, especially for receiving those emails?
I would like to maybe store the emails locally, within a folder as they are sent.

I have trouble sending email in PHP. I get an error: SMTP server response: 530 SMTP authentication is required
.
I was under the impression that you can send email without SMTP to verify. I know that this mail will propably get filtered out, but that doesn't matter right now.
[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/smtp
SMTP = localhost
; http://php.net/smtp-port
smtp_port = 25
; For Win32 only.
; http://php.net/sendmail-from
sendmail_from = someonelse@example.com
This is the setup in the php.ini
file. How should I set up SMTP? Are there any SMTP servers that require no verification or must I setup a server myself?

I need to configure a SMTP server for testing my website which sends emails (for registration confirmation etc).
I dont actually want the email to be sent, I just want to make sure that my code is correct. So I want to be able to check that the email is placed in a queue folder for example.
Can anybody recommend a SMTP server which is easy to configure?
