Nowadays with our modern operating systems, is it necessary to fully shutdown computers instead of choosing to stand-by or hibernate computers (desktops and laptops)?
Would there be any side-effects of keeping a computer running continuously without a shutdown (putting it to sleep or hibernating it when it is not used)? For example, hard drive life decrease, system internals (Processors, RAM etc.) aging faster than usual, etc?

I can't believe this has not been asked, but I couldn't find the question...
When Windows downloads updates I get the option on the shut down menu to:
- Install updates and shutdown
- Shutdown
- Restart
- Sleep
- Hibernate
but no option to Install updates and restart
This seems crazy to me, as I can't see any times I would want to install and shutdown.
Anyway is it possible to add an option to install and restart, or to add a shortcut that will do this?

How would you go about turning you computer after a specified amount of time?
I listen music before I go to sleep and would like to be able to shutdown my computer after a specified amount of time. After ½ an hour say.
It would be cool if you could connect a desktop shortcut to a task in scheduler so you click the shortcut and ½ an hour later it shuts down.

I see that I lack the choice to reboot/shut down via the start menu when logged into Windows 7 via Remote Desktop, whereas it is present in Windows Server 2008 R2. Is there some setting in Windows 7 to enable reboot/shutdown?

The question is specifically about whether it is possible to enable the standard reboot/shutdown controls in the start menu, and if so, how.

On Windows XP we had Win , U + U
On Windows 7 we had Win , Right cursor + Enter
I never had Windows 8, so I am not sure what the shortcut is/was.
There is Alt+F4 and then Enter, but this only works from the desktop. I would like to do this from any 'position' or 'place' or within any program. If I were in an application and did this, I'd only close down that application.
My question is, is there a keyboard combination (which does not rely on creating scripting files and global shortcuts), to shutdown the PC in three or less keyboard keystrokes from any position/program. Also, is there a similarly short key sequence for restart?

I have a fresh installation of Ubuntu Server. "reboot" works, but shutdown fails on the * Killing all remaining processes... step. I am using:
sudo shutdown now
After the failure, indicated by [fail] (with "fail" in red), I get this message:
* will now switch to single-user mode
with no other error messages. The user is root after the program exits.
Any ideas about how to trouble-shoot this, or what the problem might be?
The Ubuntu version is 11.10 and I ran sudo aptitude update && sudo aptitude dist-upgrade before this.

Nowadays on Windows 7, if I have no mouse on my computer I just press Win Button+->+Enter:
This makes my computer shutdown without needing to use a mouse. However, on Windows 8, I need the mouse to open that charms menu on the right side of the screen, open the "Settings" tab -> "Power" -> Then choose for "Shut down", "Sleep" or "Restart":
There is some keyboard shortcut to open these shutdown options on Windows 8 or another other way to do this without a mouse?

When I click the shut down button it gives me another screen saying shutting down:
What is actually going on during this stage?
I think in Windows XP it would say something like saving setting before it would power off. However what settings are there to save if when you apply a theme or something it is saved when you click apply.
If it is unmounting the HD then surely it would be the same as force the shut down (pulling the plug)

This might sound weird. My colleague and I were working on a Windows machine. He frequently shuts it down through the LAN.
He usually follows these steps:
- Access command prompt, enter
shutdown -i.
- Choose my IP address, click on Shutdown.
- Select a timeout of 2–3 seconds.
- Click OK
Unfortunately, I cannot disable remote access to my computer. Is there a way to prevent this?

Actually, this question struck me because of power cuts in my house. When there is a power cut, there is a sudden loss of power from the computer.

The question is pretty much in the title. Windows 8 is restarting, I probably only have like 13 minutes by now, but I can't have my computer shut off, doing like 20 different things on a couple of different VM's. How can I stop this?

In the link mentioned above, I can disable auto update through group policy or through registry editor.
regedit seems like it requires a reboot, but it doesn't specify with group policy.

At my workplace, I fully shut down my Windows 8 machine each night before going home. The last couple of mornings, it was turned on when I arrived. Is there some kind of Deep Magic that Windows 8 can use to turn itself on, or is this a clear sign that someone has been turning on my computer before I get to it?
