How could I scan multiple pages into a single PDF on the Mac?
This is for document archival (mostly invoices and receipts). Ideally, the results should be somewhat searchable (but manually giving it proper filenames and putting it into appropriate folders will do for now).

Has anyone gotten any of those older LIDE scanners (models 20, 30, 35 etc.) to work on Win7 x64??
I've tried several things, like grabbing the LIDE 60 driver for Vista64, but nothing has worked so far....
Any ideas? Doesn't look like Canon wants to support its "more-than-six-months-old" own hardware.... disappointing, really.

I need to scan lots of small items with quite similar, but not the exact same, size.
What I thought I'd like to do is:
Run a linux command line tool with the file name as a parameter which runs the scanner until about 10% of the whole scanner size and crops the image to the content that is not white (a square would be fine).
Does anybody know if this is possible and when how?
Thanks in advance!

I have a multi-function printer at home (an HP Photosmart C4280) and I would like to be able to use its scanner from any computer (they're all Windows XP) in my network. Is this doable?

What's the best software to use to scan documents direct to a multi-page PDF. I want to scan a series of sheets directly to a PDF file with as little manual intervention as possible.
Software must work with Vista/Windows 7. The scanners are cheap Canon USB flatbed scanners.
Suggestions?

What's the easiest tool to use to scan books? I find that using my scanner is difficult for books?

I have an FSP EP1000 UPS.
The User's Manual says:
CAUTION: NEVER connect a laser printer or scanner to the UPS unit.
This may cause the damage of the unit.
Why is this restriction?

Many scanners can scan a page into a PDF file.
When this is done, is the PDF file really just a container that contains a single image? Is that image typically a JPG image, a PDF image, or a proprietary format?

I have a home server running Windows Server 2008 R2, wich has one multi-functional printer.
I can already use the printer from my laptop (Windows 7 Professional RTM), but can I use the scanner tool from my laptop? If so, how?

I have a standard flatbed scanner, which doesn't come with any special accessory to scan negatives. If I scan x-rays by just putting them under the lid, with no special provision, the scans comes out very dark. How can I get a better result, without buying additional equipement?

I use Ubuntu 9.10. xsane works great for scanning a document placed on the glass, but I don't see any way to make it scan multiple pages using my all-in-one unit's sheet feeder.
I have the Brother MFC-290C and I'm using the manufacturer's driver.
The format scanned to is of lesser importance. Ideally I'd like to be able to choose whether to have each page be its own file, or combine them into a multi-page PDF or TIFF.
Thanks.

I just purchased my HP Officejet 4500 printer, launched the installation from the CD, and installed the "minimum installation" mode.
It installed software for 430 MB, installed Yahoo toolbar, and other crap I didn't ask for, added a whole bunch of start menu items, plus the installation took very long compared to what takes for drivers to be installed.
I obviously removed everything, but now to my question: Is there any alternative of installing driver/printer/scanner only without the HP software rubbish??
UPDATE -

I have a workflow whereby I scan paper documents into searchable PDFs using a Fujitsu ScanSnap S500 document scanner. I am not a great fan of the bundled software, but it's dead simple to use: place a stack of paper at the top, push the green button and a searchable PDF comes out.
Now, I'd like to do something similar on Linux (Ubuntu 10.10). The scanner is supported out of the box.
I've looked at gscan2pdf
and XSane
:
XSane
looks powerful, but not really suitable as a workflow solution;
gscan2pdf
is a bit closer to the "push the button, get the PDF" ideal, but still not 100% there.
Any other software you can recommend (free or otherwise)?

I have a Canon Pixma MP620 with an empty black ink cartridge. This particular printer is an "all-in-one" and can scan documents. However, every time I turn the printer on, the LCD shows the following error message:
U163
The following ink has run out. Replace the ink tank. [image of ink cartridge with "bk
" written at the top]
I can't afford a new cartridge right now, but I would still like to use the built-in scanner. However, I can't get rid of the "U163" error message. Therefore, I cannot use the printer user interface to actually scan a document.
How do I bypass this error message & use the scanner? I've pressed each button on the printer to no avail.
