Select All as default value for Multivalue parameter

I'm building a report in Visual Studio 2008 with a lot of multivalue parameters and it's working great, but I would like to have have the "(Select all)" option as the default value when the report is opened.

Is there some kind of expression or SQL code I can use to make this happen? Or do I need to choose "(Select all)" every time, in every parameter, each time I want to run the report?

Display .RDLC report embedded in a DLL file

I have a report that is used by a windows service and a form application. So, I want to put embed the report in a DLL file that can be used by both.

The problem is that if I try to set the ReportEmbeddedResource property of a ReportViewer control in my windows form app, it will search the windows form app for the resource, not the dll file.

e.g.: Code from the windows form app:

rv.LocalReport.ReportEmbeddedResource = "MyReportInMyDLLFile.rdlc"

How can I make the above command look for the embedded resource in my DLL file?

Reporting Services export to Excel with Multiple Worksheets

I'm currently building a MS Reporting Services Report that gets rendered to excel. I'm trying to figure out how to set up the report so that it creates multiple Worksheets (Tabs) of the data on the report. I understand that entering a page break in the report gives you a new worksheet, however, is there a way to name each tab instead of it default to (worksheet 1, worksheet 2) etc.

Anyone know how this is done?

Thanks in advance!

How do you shade alternating rows in a SQL Server Reporting Services report?

Cannot view SSRS 2008 R2 - SSRS 2012 Reports in Safari/Chrome but works fine in FireFox/IE8... why?

I have some simple reports in SSRS 2008 R2 but they won't display at all in Safari or Chrome. According to Microsoft's Books Online, these browsers are supported in limited fashion. However, I can't see anything after the data "Loading" clock completes. The parameter bar and bread crumb navigation section at the top of the page are all there. Also, I can Save/Export to any format on Safari and Chrome. It just won't display the report section itself, which is just blank.

Am I suppose to use certificates and secured connections (currently not setup with https, only http)? Are there any server side configurations that need to be tweaked? Has anyone had success displaying ANY reports on Safari/Chrome using previous SSRS versions (2005)?

I'm using Safari 5.0.4 and Chrome 10.0.648.151. I know the similarity for these two browsers is they both are based on WebKit.

The report renders successfully on IE8 (of course) and FireFox 4.0.

Would really appreciate it if someone can shed some light.

Thanks in advance. - Greg

When to use RDLC over RDL reports?

I have been studying SSRS 2005 / 2008 in the past weeks and have created some server side reports. For some application, a colleague suggested that I look into RDLC for that particular situation. I am now trying to get my head around the main difference between RDL and RDLC.

Searching for this information yields fragmented information at best. I have learned that:

  • RDLC reports do not store information about how to get data.
  • RDLC reports can be executed directly by the ReportViewer control.

But I still don't fully understand the relation between the RDLC file and the other related systems (the Reporting Server, the source database, the client).

In order to get a good grasp on RDLC files, I would like to know how their use differs from RDL files and in what situation one would choose RDLC over RDL. Links to resources are also welcome.

Update:

A thread on the ASP.NET forums discusses this same issue. From it, I have gained some better understanding on the issue.

A feature of RDLC is that it can be run completely client-side in the ReportViewer control.

  • This removes the need for a Reporting Services instance, and even removes the need for any database connection whatsoever, but:
  • It adds the requirement that the data that is needed in the report has to be provided manually.

Whether this is an advantage or a disadvantage depends on the particular application.

In my application, an instance of Reporting Services is available anyway and the required data for the reports can easily be pulled from a database. Is there any reason left for me to consider RDLC, or should I simply stick with RDL?

Where does a published RDL file sit?

When publishing a reporting services report. Where does the actual .RDL file sit on the server?

I can redownload the .RDL file via browsing through the report manager? But where is this file situated on the reporting services server?

Thanks

SSRS 2008 R2 - SSRS 2012 reports are blank in Safari and Chrome

I migrated our reporting services from version 2008 to another server version 2008 R2. In version 2008 the reports work fine on Safari. The new version 2008 R2 the reports do not show up at all. All I see is the parameter section and then the report is blank. Same in Chrome. According to Microsoft Safari IS supported if in a limited fashion. The reports are not complex. In fact I created a report that only had a line on it to see if it would show up in Safari but no, that report is completely blank as well. Did anyone make SSRS reports viewable on Safari? Do I have to mess with some kind of a configuration setting?

Open Source .Net Reporting Tool [closed]

I am looking for a reporting service/tool for visual Studio. My only restraint is my web server is off limits to me as far as installing ANYTHING. So I need something I can just include in my project.

My users need to be able to export a report to PDF and without being able to use Crystal I am pretty much lost.

Any ideas?

Reporting Services Deployment

I need to create a repeatable process for deploying SQL Server Reporting Services reports. I am not in favor of using Visual Studio and or Business Development Studio to do this. The rs.exe method of scripting deployments also seems rather clunky. Does anyone have a very elegant way that they have been able to deploy reports. The key here is that I want the process to be completely automated.

Tablix: Repeat header rows on each page not working - Report Builder 3.0

I have a tablix with lots of rows that span over multiple pages. I have set the Tablix property Repeat header rows on each page but this does not work. I read somewhere that this is a known bug in Report Builder 3.0. Is this true? If not, is there something else that needs to be done?

DataSet panel in SSRS designer is gone

In the "Layout" screen of an SSRS designer (Visual Studio 2005), the DataSets panel no longer displays. Previously it was in the same area as the general Toolbox panel. Anybody know how to get it back?

Pentaho vs Microsoft BI Stack [closed]

My company is heavily invested in the MS BI Stack (SQL Server Reporting Services, -Analysis Services and -Integration Services), but I want to have a look at what the seemingly most talked about open-source alternative Pentaho is like.

I've installed a version, and I got it up and running quite painlessly. So that's good. But I haven't really the time to start using it for actual work to get a thorough understanding of the package.

Have any of you got any insights into what are the pros and cons of Pentaho vs MS BI, or any links to such comparisons?

Much appreciated!
