Repeating a Wi-Fi signal with a Windows 7 laptop

I have a weak Wi-Fi signal that I can receive only by using my Windows 7 Laptop which uses an external Wi-Fi antenna..

I have an iPad which doesn't receive the signal as well - if at all - so I'm thinking if I could use the laptop either to share the connection with USB or make the laptop an Access Point to kind of "repeat" the signal (I don't know if its the right terminology).

Which is the easiest method to do this? I have to set this up remotely so the instructions should be as minimal as possible.

Does a wireless to wireless repeater have to know about encryption?

I am curious, whther a WLAN repeater needs to know about network encryption? It works on the 1st level of OSI Model - why does TP-Link write here that only WEP is supported?

What SSID does a repeater needs?

Installing an SSID on a working wifi network.

Main SSID is: home_1

When installing the Repeater - does it name has to be the same? home_1 ? or should it be a different name?

If it's a different name - I have a problem understanding the logic behind extending the main SSID - as I need to connect to a different one.

Wireless router with repeater setup

I have 2 netgear routers "WGR614 v6" and "WNR2000". How to set these up (one as a repeater) to get wireless access throughout my large house?

What's the most cost effective (reliable) way to establish a 200m ethernet link?

As the title suggests, I have some kit which is 200m from our current infrastructure (outdoors).

What is the cheapest way to establish a reliable connection across a 200m stretch (Cat 5e ethernet only works up to about 100m from our tests)?

Is it possible to make a wifi g network link over 1-2km (1 mile) with some obstacles?

What type of antenna should I get ?

Should I use an usb wifi dongle or a dd-wrt router for 2 laptops ?

Is it possible to setup a D-Link DIR-300 wifi router as repeater?

I have a cable modem provided by the ISP, wich also is a wifi access point, but the wifi signal doesn't reach a room located in another floor of my house.

I have a D-Link DIR-300 router and I wonder if is it possible to use it as a repeater of the AP to get a stronger wifi signal. If it is possible to do it, are there any good "how-to" tutorial freely available so I can get this setup working?

How can I get a WiFi signal inside a walk-in freezer?

I need to amplify our WiFi signal into a large walk-in freezer. Currently, the signal gets everywhere around the freezer, but does not penetrate the steel walls.

What would be the best and cheapest way to get a strong signal into the freezer?

UPDATE: I purchased an Engenius ENH210. I'm planning on mounting this inside the freezer and running this directional antenna or something like it outside the freezer by connecting it to the ENH210 using a cable like this. Feedback?

Also, am I looking at substantial loss in data transfer speed if I use a much longer length coaxial cable to reach a better signal, such as this one?

Is it possible to have multiple repeaters in a network with just 1 uniform SSID?

I'm currently setting up a network with 1 access point. Since WiFi range is not very far, I'd like to extend the range by using repeaters. I did several setups in the past but they always had another SSID. So I had an SSID for my repeater which computers and devices could connect to, and the repeater connects to the main access point.

Is it possible to have a router with a name 'linksys' and 3 repeaters connected to it? Would it be possible to have all repeaters to have the name 'linksys' so only 1 SSID would appear in the networks detected? Is there any other option to this if it's impossible to do with repeaters?

What are the differences between a repeater bridge and WDS?

I've read about both repeater bridge mode and WDS in the DD-WRT documentation. It sounds like they solve the same problem, but it's not clear from the DD-WRT documentation where they differ, if at all. What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Should I prefer one to the other if my routers support it?

Can I use a wireless router as a repeater?

I have a wireless TP-Link TL-WR941ND router connected to the internet, but I can't get a good signal in the other end of my house. I have a spare Edimax BR-6226n wireless router.

Is it possible to use it to somehow increase the signal of my wifi network? If not, is it possible to do it with a computer attached (I got lots of old ones around)?

Does a wireless repeater slow things down for everyone?

I recently moved into a new apartment, and we've found that the wireless connection we've set up isn't accessible in all rooms. I'm thinking about buying a new router and running it as a repeater in bridge mode.

I've heard that running a repeater slows things down for computers using it. What I'm not sure of, though, is if it will slow down connections for everyone in the house. Will I still experience a slower connection speed when I am within range of the original wireless router?

Repeater injected to my network?

I know this is not that kind of support website but on the other side I found my problem very fascinating so I'll post it anyway.

Yesterday all of my machines disconnected from my home network. It took a while until they could reconnect again. Then everything went back to normal, besides that one of my machines (Windows 7) wouldn't allow me to connect to the Internet. I can access all of my email accounts (imap).

I can access google.com but in most cases the authorization window of my browser pops up and asks for login. It says:

Repeater
Login: admin / PW: 1234

When I quit this dialog the browser will return 401 unauthorized.

When I try to connect to an https://<website>, there is a warning about a corrupt certificate that is only valid for 127.0.0.1 (on Windows and Ubuntu).

There has been no modification to the network by us, and the FritzBox we are using is not acting as a repeater. We don't use repeaters at all.

This is what I tried to fix the problem: - I changed the OS to Ubuntu and I faced the same problem. - I flushed my DNS, added 8.8.8.8... same issues. - I updated my router firmware.

After I switched the usb dongle, everything went back to normal. I thought the dongle was simply broken. Today I came home and guess what.. the same thing is happening again and this time it is not only the same machine as before but also my smartphone.

I did some tracepath. Here's the output on my corrupt machine:

foo@foo-MS-7758:~$ tracepath golem.de
 1?: [LOCALHOST] pmtu 1500

     Resume: pmtu 1500 hops 1 back 1

Output on the working machine:

Do you have any idea what could cause this and how I can fix it? How could I gather more information to get to the ground of this?

EDIT: DNS is working correctly btw. I can ping any URL and it will give me the correct IP but no answers.

EDIT2: brw002258164b03 is the network name of my brother wireless printer. The Fritzbox seems to route the traffic to the wrong devices or whatever. Also tracepath won't alays return brw002258164b03 but also some microsoft server names etc.

This still doesn't explain why I can access google and golem.de but no other websites (tracepath also returned the brother printers network name when I traced golem.de or google.de).

I removed my computer from the list of network devices and then I connected with a static IP address. I'm excited how this will work out.

Buying another router and use as a "signal repeater" in bridge mode?

I asked about using a pc almost as a "router" and although it's a solution, I tought about just buying a second router to act as a "bridge" between my connection. (Reason: I don't want to have to keep my laptop turned on just to use the other devices)

Here is my setup now: in room1 I have router1. In room3 I have a laptop with a wireless connection, getting an ip by DHCP.

I want to buy another router(router2), put in room3, and connect two devices using ethernet cable(my tv and my ps3): this router2 should act just a a signal repeater (don't know if this is the correct term). All the devices connecting by ethernet cable should receive an ip from router1 dhcp, not from router2(since it's doing just a "bridge" from the other router).

My router1 is a Dlink DIR-300. Is it possible to create this setup I'm thinking of?

How can I turn a Mac Mini into a dedicated wireless repeater? [closed]

I have a Mac Mini (2007 model) that I'd like to turn into a dedicated Wireless Repeater. I have an additional USB Wi-Fi dongle for this.

I don't have Mac OS installed on it, nor do I want to. I was trying to achieve this by installing Ubuntu Server and setting the network cards and using hostapd and bridge-utils, but I was way over my head and couldn't figure it out.

I'd like to know if there is some complete guide explaining how to completely turn a computer into a dedicated wireless repeater, and/or if there is a distro specially suited for this that I can install on this Mac Mini.

Thanks.
