Can I remotely hibernate a computer?

I know the shutdown command (and the corresponding shutdown /i switch to show the GUI), but is there a way to hibernate a computer remotely in a similar way?

The machines are running Windows XP and Vista - I'd like to be able to do it either way round.

How to hide the notifications of the Teamviewer (silent use)

Is it possible to hide a quick panel of the TeamViewer in the right corner and other notifications and pop-ups to enable a "silent" remote session?

Run a remote command using ssh config file

I'd like to be able to setup a command to run on ssh login to a server, without needing to type it. Basically I'm looking for the ssh config file equivalent of:

ssh host command

so that all I need to type is:

ssh host

and the command gets run.

How can TeamViewer work without modifying firewall/router settings?

All remote desktop software that I know about needs to modify firewall settings and open ports.

How can Teamviewer work without modifying them? Does some alternative software exist that can also do remote control without modifying network settings?

Office jukebox systems [closed]

We're looking for a good office jukebox solution where staff can select songs via a web interface to be played over the central set of speakers.

Must haves:

  • Web Interface
  • RSS / easy to scrap display of currently playing songs
  • Ability to play mp3s and manage an ordered playlist.
  • Good cataloguing of media.
  • Multiple OSs supported as clients - Windows, Mac, Fedora Linux (will probably be accomplished by virtue of a web interface).

We have tried XBMC which worked well as a proof of concept however the web interface is just too immature and has too many bugs for a reliable multi-user solution. I believe the same will be true of boxee.

Nice to have:

  • Ability to play music videos onto a monitor
  • Ability to listen to radio streams specifically Shoutcast and the BBC.

Ability to run on Linux is a nice to have but windows solutions which worked well would certainly be considered.

I am aware of question 61404 and don't believe this to be a duplicate due to the specific requirements.

High-performance remote desktop for Windows 7

We have a client who has a machine using an extremely high resolution output setup (3 30" monitors in portrait mode for a total resolution of 4800x2560.)

He routinely remotes into this machine but the performance is lousy - we're looking for the highest fidelity remote desktop solution available for this. TeamViewer, GoToMeeting, and LogMeIn have proved inadequate.

Should we be looking into Citrix or something like that (none of us have any experience with it)? Basically what we need is the lowest-latency, highest performance app we can get. (The client realizes remote connections will never be up to speed but at the very least a reasonable amount of color fidelity would be nice.)

Bandwidth isn't currently a consideration here - we'll end up testing any solutions for real world performance but we really need to know where to look. I'm sure we can manage SOME kind of improvement.

Is there any method of blocking remote control software?

Recently someone using a computer of mine started a remote session with GoToMeeting and allowed someone to control the PC. UAC didn't block the session (they're a regular user). It appears that many of the remote access tools ignore UAC and regular users can invite anyone to control the PC.

Are there any methods of blocking tools like GoToMeeting, join.me or TeamViewer on a regular Windows 7 PC?

So far the only thing that seems feasible is blocking the websites serving up these tools, but there are easy ways around that.

Many of these tools seem to dynamically use ports that are open, so port blocking doesn't seem feasible either, but I might be wrong.

automate your computer via sms

I was wondering if it was possible to automate my pc by sending sms text messages to it.

This is the plan:

  • connect usb gsm modem to the pc
  • Send the text "start explorer" to the usb modem using my mobile device
  • the application on the computer receives the text, and starts the program "explorer"

This is a simple example of course, but I hope it's enough to show what I'm trying to accomplish: starting certain programs on the computer with an sms command.

It doesn't have to be a windows, I can use a linux pc too.

Feeding a Dog Remotely - hardware? [closed]

I'm looking for a way to, remotely, activate some sort of treat dispenser.

I'm not a hardware guy, and I'm sure that conceptually, this is very easy. But I don't know how to begin. I haven't found any products designed to do exactly this.

Perhaps some sort of beginning robotics kit could do it?

How to share only one window/application to other user in network?

I know VNC, windows remote control can share screen to others.

Can I just share one window/application to my buddy and give control of this window/application to him? Same time, I still want to operate the other windows I have.

If I choose to share desktop to him, I can't do anything while he is working on my desktop screen.

Any suggestion is appreciated!

Thanks, Wei

Software to customise this USB PC Remote Control

I bought this remote from eBay and have been trying to customise it ever since. Most of the buttons work but I was hoping I could use something like Autohotkey and WinLIRC to fully personalise every aspect of it. However after trying many remotes from around the house, it appears the receiver won't accept any other signals than from supplied remote. Which explains why WinLIRC (used to get raw IR data) won't work.

Does anyone have any experience with this (or a similar) remote. It's even advertised as being able to shutdown your PC (red button on top left), but for some reason does nothing.

I just want to customise what the buttons do. And I'm open for any solution, as hacky as it might be. Hopefully free though.

Oh and I'm on Windows 7.

image of remote

Update: I looked around Device Manager and unplugged/replugged to find the device. It's under 3 HID Keyboard Device entries under Keyboard and also as a HID-compliant mouse. The Vendor/Product ID (0x073A/0x2230) refers to Chaplet Systems, Inc (thanks whitequark).

IR reading is out as it seems the receiver translates IR data into keystrokes and mouse movements.

Still, any help with this device would be greatly appreciated :)

Remote control a computer using another computer

I've got a main desktop computer at home, I'd like watch movies using it but able to control it afar.

For example, I would like to lay on my bed and control the desktop using my own laptop via wireless.

I've been looking for solutions to my question. I tried to use remote desktop, I can pause the movie but I then have to go to the pc to log in the OS again. I also tried to bind my desktop to my mobile phone over bluetooth, this works as I can control the mouse etc. but I found I can barely see the mouse pointer when at long distance.

I still wish I can use my laptop as a remote control, is this possible?

Font changes when doing screen sharing

Windows 7 Pro, 64 bit, 1920X1080 screen and I have noticed that when I do a screen sharing session Webex, eLuminate, or Bomgar, my font changes to something 'thinner'. RDP does not seem to cause this.

Normally at the end of the session it reverts back to the normal font. Just this time, after a Bomgar session it did not revert.

I never bothered looking into what could cause, since it always reverts, but now this is odd.

Is a good graphics card important for remote desktop?

I'm trying to pick a laptop for working from home, where I'll be using remote desktop to connect to my machine at work. How important is it to have a good graphics card on the client machine (the laptop)?
