I'm using Firefox 3.6.3 on Win 7 x64. Some web sites require QuickTime plugin. How can I install Firefox QuickTime plugin without installing Apple's QuickTime? I definitely don't want to install QuickTime to my system.

I have a number of sound-only mov files that I need in an audio format, preferably wav or ogg. What are the options to achieve this conversion on a Mac? Thank you!

Every time I update Quicktime on both Vista and XP, I lose file associations I made for VLC (my preferred player). I only keep QT around for the odd browser video, and would prefer to keep it without it surprising me every couple months by stealing file associations.

Now, I'm not really sure what's the exact term here. As far as I saw, cropping is related to video size.
I need a program to trim some parts of the video file. On a timescale, for example, from 0-60s, I'd like to trim the parts from 14-20s, and from 30-35s.
Can anyone give a recommendation for such an application ?
The movie in question is a .MOV file, so Windows Movie Maker doesn't work.

For some reason when streaming quicktime movies with the browser plug-in the transport bar is completely black. I can still use it but I can't actually see any of the buttons. Any clue how to fix this?
I've updated to the latest version of quicktime but it didn't help.
This behavior is the same in both firefox and chrome.

This question already has an answer here:
When I try to open a movie I just created with the command:
ffmpeg -pattern_type glob -i '*.JPG' -s 640x480 movie.mp4
I get an error from QuickTime:
The document “movie.mp4” could not be opened.
The file may be damaged or may not be a movie file that is compatible with QuickTime Player.
I used the same command on a set of images generated from an iSight time lapse, but in this case the above images are from a digital camera. The resolution is a lot higher, but I am scaling it to 640x480 and I don't see anything in the output that suggests a problem:
Input #0, image2, from '*.JPG':
Duration: 00:00:04.76, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A
Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj422p(pc), 4928x3264, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc
vs. the working movie:
Input #0, image2, from '*.JPG':
Duration: 00:01:23.72, start: 0.000000, bitrate: N/A
Stream #0:0: Video: mjpeg, yuvj420p(pc), 640x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], 25 fps, 25 tbr, 25 tbn, 25 tbc
And for the output:
Output #0, mp4, to 'movie.mp4':
Metadata:
encoder : Lavf55.19.104
Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (libx264) ([33][0][0][0] / 0x0021), yuvj422p, 640x480, q=-1--1, 12800 tbn, 25 tbc
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg -> libx264)
vs. for the working one:
Output #0, mp4, to 'movie.mp4':
Metadata:
encoder : Lavf55.19.104
Stream #0:0: Video: h264 (libx264) ([33][0][0][0] / 0x0021), yuvj420p, 640x480 [SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], q=-1--1, 12800 tbn, 25 tbc
Stream mapping:
Stream #0:0 -> #0:0 (mjpeg -> libx264)
Aside from the working movie being longer and a lower source resolution, the only difference I can see is that there is an extra "[SAR 1:1 DAR 4:3]" mentioned in the video stream, but I have no idea what this is, or how to try to force it in the non-working movie.
Update: I just downloaded VLC and it plays the movie fine. So I know ffmpeg isn't at fault here.

No matter what I try, the Quicktime plugin in Firefox on Vista will not go away. I have deleted all of the plugin files in "Mozilla Firefox/plugins" as well as unistalling the program itself and deleting the junk still left behind in Program Files.
After all that, somehow Quicktime still runs its plugin in Firefox. How can I disable it?
I've installed QT Lite as the alternative, but it doesn't seem to install a plugin in Firefox, even though I have the option checked.
Thanks.

My Canon 60D creates .MOV files when recording video and I've found out that the .MOV container has an H264 video stream and a PCM audio stream.
I've used ffmpeg and GSpot to look at some of my videos, and I see what seem to be pretty high bitrates (22,000kbps for 640x480, 45,000 for 1920x1080).
I'd like to reduce the size of the files, but keep the quality quite high. I've played around with the simplest thing I could think of, reducing the bit rate and that does what I'd expect: cut the bitrate in half and the file size is about half. But I'm wondering if there's a way to determine a "good" target bitrate, or if there's any point in trying to do variable bitrate.

I have a video file (.mov > QuickTime) which was recorded with a VHoldr ContourHD camera.
One of the problems with this camera is that when the battery dies, it doesn't terminate the video file correctly... which is exactly what happened to my video.
I've searched around a bit, and all the video and audio data should actually be there, but the .mov file is missing headers and should be reindexed.
I found this site that offers to do .mov repairs, but they charge almost $80 for one lousy movie. I'm sure there must exist a (free) tool which can simply reindex a .mov file, but I've yet to find it...
I'm on Windows. I've tried VirtualDUB with MOV mod, but that doesn't work. It refuses to load the corrupt file.
Can anyone suggest another tool or any other way to fix (reindex) QuickTime movies?

Quicktime Player for Snow Leopard now allows you record the screen. Awesome!
Once you have a movie it will let you trim screen recordings for length.
Is there a way to crop the movie's dimensions, either in QT or using some built-in or free software?
Update: How to crop to an arbitrary size and aspect ratio? iMovie only seems to let you crop to the aspect ratio of the containing project.
Result: Both good answers but since I have QuickTime Player 7 and Photoshop, that's the workflow I choose as the answer. NOTE: If you have Photoshop Extended, you can import a movie, use the crop tool, and Export the cropped movie. Not free or built-in, but convenient.
To summarize the instructions from the video link ricbax posted:
- Open movie in QuickTime Player 7
- Copy a frame and Paste it into a new document in Photoshop
- Draw a rectangular selection around the area to keep and fill with black
- Invert the selection and fill with white
- Save as .GIF, with 2 colors
- Back in QuickTime Player 7, open Movie Properties window
- Select the Video Track
- Select the Visual Settings Tab
- Drag and Drop the 2-color .GIF file onto the Mask drop area (or use choose file button)
- Export the (now cropped) movie
DONE

I created a new windows 7 SP1 base image.
Everything is all fine and dandy with that.
So i am now installing standard applications
I would like Quicktime to manage .mov files. The only problem is WMP (Windows Media Player) won't give up the association to .mov files.
It's driving me crazy... i've been reading threads on how to fix file associations.
I would like to do it via registry, powershell or cmdline. I cannot use GPO
I've tried the following:
assoc .mov=QuickTime.mov
ftype QuickTime.mov="%ProgramFiles(x86)\QuickTime\QuickTimePlayer.exe"
Reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\UserChoice" /v Progid /d QuickTime.mov /f
Reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\OpenWithList" /v a /d QuickTimePlayer.exe /f
Reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\OpenWithList" /v b /d wmplayer.exe /f
Reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\OpenWithList" /v MRUList /d ab /f
Reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\OpenWithProgids" /v Quicktime.mov /t REG_NONE /d 0000 /f
Reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\windows\CurrentVersion\Explorere\FileExts\.mov\OpenWithProgids" /v WMP11.AssocFile.MOV /t REG_NONE /d 0000 /f

I recently encoded a screencast using x264. The video is here:
http://www.libsys.und.edu/dev/ssl.avi
It works fine in VLC, but QuickTime claims it needs extra components to play it. I'm confused. I thought x264 was a clone of H.264, which QT has native support for?
Anyway, a friend of mine is having trouble getting it to play back on Mac OS X (10.6.8), and I see the same problem in my Windows 7 box. Either I did it wrong or I'm missing something.

Since QuickTime X came out, whenever I watch HD trailers from Apple, they automatically begin playing as soon as possible. Is there a hidden preference to disable that? My question may be similar to a previous question on QuickTime X autoplay for embedded videos. I'm assuming it's a defaults write
thing…

When I launch a movie in QuickTime I'd like for it to always open up on my second display (not the default primary one). I'm actually opening the movie via AppleScript from iTunes so an applescript solution would be OK.
There used to be a preference setting in Quicktime that would let you default it to a particular display but that seems to have been lost with QuickTime X.
