Chrome browser rendering is slightly fuzzy

I'm running Windows 8 on a Retina MacBook through Parallels.

When I open the "Metro" Chrome application (i.e. click on the chrome tile to launch) the browser renders beautiful crisp content, but when I run Chrome from the desktop (i.e. run the desktop application and double click the Chrome icon on my desktop), content in the browser is slightly fuzzy.

Is there a way to make Chrome look nice regardless of how I launch it?

Convert VMWare image to Parallels

Is it possible to convert a VMWare image or the vmdk files to a Parallels VM without booting the image in VMWare and installing the transporter client.

I downloaded a virtual appliance running linux, and it seems to much work if I should have to boot it in VMWare player on a windows box in order to get it over to my Mac.

On the VMWare side things seems much easier with VMWare converter.

Maybe I should switch from Parallels to VMWare Fusion instead on the Mac...

Boot Camp, Parallels, VirtualBox Or Fusion? [closed]

Boot Camp, Parallels, VirtualBox Or Fusion?

In a recent article on Australian LifeHacker.com they discussed the following question, I trust the SU group more then the anonymous answers from LifeHacker and I thought I would re-ask it here?

I’m sitting here with my MacBook Pro and a copy of Windows 7, wanting to combine the two into the ultimate blogging machine. But how to do it?

I could go the cheap option of Boot Camp, which only lets me boot one OS at a time, and is free. Or I could spring for a copy of Parallels or VMWare Fusion to do the whole virtual machine thing.

So the question today is which should I choose? Either because you want to know what the process is like, or because you recommend the solution – either one is fine by me.

EDIT: Work is paying too; so don't worry about price affecting your choice!

Best virtualization solution for running Linux under Mac OS X?

I'd like to run a virtualized Ubuntu instance under Mac OS X (10.6). I've used VirtualBox in the past, but am looking for something that will be faster, and don't mind paying for either Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion.

Does anyone have experience running Linux guests under either or both programs? I'm primarily interested in doing software development on the Linux guest installation, but I'm also very concerned with the performance and responsiveness the guest OS.

I have a mid-2010 15" MacBook Pro (2.66 GHz i5, 8 GB of RAM, NVIDIDA GeForce GT 330M).

Thanks!

Mac:Windows 10 on PD10, missing media driver

I am using Parallels Desktop 10 on OS X Yosemite GM.

I tried to install Windows 10 TP on my PD 10 but when I got into the installation phase, it informed that: "A media driver your computer needs is missing.". I have tried OS type Windows 7/8/Other, all had the same issue.

Where is the problem?

What is the recommended Mac desktop VM software for Linux guests?

(This question was originally posted at Server Fault, but Super User seems a more appropriate place to ask.)

I use a MacBook Pro as my primary machine, but my work targets Linux servers. I'm currently on a project with multiple dependencies, and which is configured for Ubuntu.

  1. Configuring all these dependencies on OSX is a pain. I've been through Macports, Fink and Homebrew. They are all nice, but they don't provide a 100% drop-in replacement for Ubuntu packaging. Rewriting all the deployment scripts just to accommodate one Mac developer seems like a waste of time.

  2. Dual-booting Ubuntu on this Mac doesn't seem like an option yet. The current hardware generation (7,1) is not fully supported.

  3. Using an Ubuntu VM for all my development work seems to be the way to go. I'm using VirtualBox at the moment. Seamless mode is nice, but I wonder if VMware Fusion or Parallels will be nicer.

So here is the question: what's the best VM app for Linux desktop guests on a Mac OS X host? VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, Parallels, or any other? What do you like about it?

Update: Learning some hard lessons:

  1. VirtualBox disk images are not resizable. VMware Fusion disk images are.
  2. VirtualBox locks the keyboard until you press the host key (Command). Very annoying.
  3. VMware Fusion 3.0's Unity is far nicer than VirtualBox's seamless mode. Fusion is also just a $9.99 upgrade until Dec 31, 2010.
  4. VirtualBox's guest tools installation is far smoother than VMware Fusion's. The latter's was somewhat intimidating. VMware needs to bundle nicer distro-specific installers.
  5. Shared folders in VMware Fusion mount automatically at /mnt/hgfs and carry through file ownership, POSIX permissions and symlinks. No such luck with VirtualBox.

My pick: VMware Fusion 3.0.

Can I share a VM between Parallels on Windows and Parallels on Mac?

I suspect the answer to this question will be 'no,' but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I use Parallels Desktop on my Mac to run a small CentOS installation for development work. I own Parallels Workstation for Windows. Is it possible to create one PVM and use it with both Parallels Desktop and Parallels Workstation?

It doesn't appear anyone's tried to do this, probably because it's impossible. So far, my attempts have not been very fruitful - cloning an existing PVM to a FAT32-formatted disk fails due to file system differences - but if someone wants to offer me a shred of hope that this can be done, I'll happily keep trying all night.

(A similar question was asked about sharing VirtualBox virtual machines between Windows and OSX and received 0 answers.)

VT-x/AMD-V Work-Around For VirtualBox?

After converting a Parallels VM to VirtualBox, the converted VM still does not run. VirtualBox says:

VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational.... Please ensure you have VT-x/AMD-V enabled in the BIOS of your host computer

Only I have no such option in my BIOS even after upgrading to the latest firmware yesterday. Turning VT-x/AMD-V Acceleration off in the VM Settings does not work since VirtualBox re-enables it again automatically.

The question is how to get this VM to run?

  1. Can VirtualBox really be make to run the VM without VT-x/AMD-V acceleration? The same machine works in Parallels, so it is obviously possible on the same H/W.
  2. Can the VT-x/AMD-V technology be enabled some other way? My CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 945 and the motherboard is an ECS A785GM-M.

All this is running under OpenSUSE 11.2 64-bit with VirtualBox 4.0.4.12 and Parallels Desktop 4 (which is why I am stuck at 11.2 and trying to get VirtualBox to work).

Cannot connect to Parallels VM over network

I am trying to connect to my VM (Windows Server 2008 R2) through my Mac.

I have tried

  • Host only network,
  • Shared network and
  • Bridged,

but I cannot connect with any of them. I am just trying to get to port 80. I cannot ping from my Mac to the VM, but I can ping from the VM to the Mac.

Any ideas?

Why does the control key no longer work when selecting text in a Parallels virtual machine?

In Windows 8, the control key is helpful for navigating and selecting text. Ctrl-arrow skips words, and ctrl-shift-arrow selects a word at a time.

I created a Win 8 virtual machine using Parallels 8 on my Mac (Mountain Lion), and the control-arrow text behavior does not work in the VM. It’s very inconvenient and unexpected. Can this be fixed?

Copy and paste not working in Parallels 8

I have Parallels 8 and Windows 7, and the copy and paste does not work. I called Parallels tech support and they had no answer on how to fix the problem. Does anyone else out there have a suggestion as to how to fix this problem?

Parallels: Copy and Paste not working

I am running Parallels build 4.0.3384 (the latest at the time of writing), on Mac OS X 10.5.7, with Windows 7 RC1 as my VM

I am unable to copy and paste from the host to the VM and vice versa. This is really annoying, any ideas?

TortoiseSVN client slows Explorer to a crawl in Windows XP running in Parallels

I thought I'd make my first SuperUser question relatively simple, though it's the kind of question that may not get many responses as I'm not directly involved with the issue.

A colleague does his development in Windows XP running in Parallels on his Mac. We've just migrated our VSS repository to SVN, and we've gone with TortoiseSVN as our client of choice with the Ankhsvn plugin for Visual Studio.

On his XP instance, after installing TortoiseSVN, browsing through folders using Explorer is extremely slow; about 15 - 30 seconds before the contents of the next folder displays. It's the slowest when opening My Computer. Once he reaches a folder that contains the working content of an SVN project, Explorer behaves quickly again as expected. It seems that TortoiseSVN may be spending a bunch of time searching subfolders for stuff so it can do its icon-overlay thing, but that's just a guess.

I've used TortoiseSVN for years on both XP and Vista on far less powerful machines without any issues with Explorer, so I'm attributing the slowness to it being run in a VM, though that may not be the actual issue.

So has anyone encountered similar performance issues, and/or know of a fix? Keep in mind that any requests to make changes to his configuration will need to be communicated and thus my response time might be slow.

Thanks everyone!

Arch Linux Install Cannot Enable dhcpd

I am trying to setup internet with arch linux. I just installed it using parallels and got the following error:

[root@singularity ~]# systemctl enable dhcpd.service
Failed to issue method call: No such file or directory

So I tried linking it manually:

[root@singularity ~]# ln -s /usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpd.service /usr/lib/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/dhcpd.service

It was then that I realized that the file didn't even exist:

[root@singularity ~]# ls /usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpd.service
ls: cannot access /usr/lib/systemd/system/dhcpd.service: No such file or directory

Is there any way I can fix this? I do not have any internet access because I cannot enable dhcpd. I am running OSX 10.9 and using parallels.
