BD-ROM Drive suddenly appeared in My Computer

Today I noticed that a "BD-ROM Drive" appears in My Computer.

I do not remember installing anything that would've done that.

What could've caused this?

How are commercial DVD's burned? [closed]

I'm not talking about the DVD-R's here. When you buy retail software and DVD movies from the store for example, how is that DVD burned onto the original disc? What would I need if I want to burn those type of "commericial" discs? (Is there a special device similar to a DVD burner for example, for this?)

A disk is stuck in my slot-loading Dell Studio Hybrid. How can I get it out?

The slot-loading optical drive in my Dell Studio Hybrid has been acting up. Sometimes it works fine, sometimes it churns and makes some unpleasant sounds. Now I can't even get it to eject the disc that's in there.

Many drives have an "emergency eject" pinhole, but I don't see one here. How can I get the disc out?

Can I replace laptop's optical drive with SSD or other hard disk?

Can I replace my optical drive with a hard drive? I have an Asus N61J laptop, I have seen some sites on the web that advertise this procedure for Apple notebooks. I would prefer not to have an external hard drive.

Sound output connector on CD-ROM drive?

My old CD reader has a volume knob and a minijack socket on the front. On the back it has the regular stuff (IDE interface, Molex power) plus a digital sound connector (DG) and an analog sound connector (RGGL). Is there a specific cable meant for connecting the digital or analog sound output to my motherboard, or do I have to solder one myself?

The CD-ROM drive is a Lite-On LTN-486 and has the ability play CDs and output the sound without communicating with a computer.

Is there a program to enable/disable a computer's DVD-ROM drive with a mouse click?

Frequently I have a DVD-disk left in the DVD-ROM drive, which I am kind of reluctant to take out. I have Windows-7 OS which freezes constanly checking on that disk. I do not need that constant checking, because I know what disk I have in the drive.

Is there a way to turn off the DVD-drive when I do not need to use it?

Thank you.

How can I find what /dev my DVD-drive is?

I'm on Mac OS X, have a DVD in the DVD-drive and can look at it in the Finder. I'd like to try to create an iso of it by using the dd command. But to do that I need to know what device to use as an input. How can I find what device my DVD-drive is?

How to access a CD/DVD drive over the network?

The CD/DVD drive of my notebook is broken. However, the drive from my desktop computer is working perfectly.

How can I access the CD/DVD drive from my desktop computer over the network? I want to put a DVD disc there and access it from my notebook.

Both computers have Gentoo/Linux. (but the solution ought to work on any Linux distribution)

How does a computer know which CD/DVDs to boot from?

What actually happens when a user reboots his or her system with an OS disk (or other bootable disk) in the CD/DVD drive?

For example, when I put in my OS installation CD and start the computer up, it says "Press any key to continue from CD or DVD...". How this is done on the actual CD/DVD? Because this indicates that when each time CPU is rebooted it first checks the CD drive...

Now my question is, how does a CD/DVD put these contents on it to indicate that it is a normal disk versus a bootable/OS disk? How does the computer identify such discs on boot?

Can my DVD burner write "Dual Layer" disks?

Is there a generic way to find out if a DVD burner can burn dual layer DVD’s without trying and potential waste a disk?

Right now it’s this drive I’m wondering about but I'd like a solution that works for all—or most—DVD drives out there.

What does Verify disc after burning actually do to verify the data?

I imagine it is some kind of comparison between the original files and the files that have been burned on the disc, but does anybody know how it is really done at a low level?

I mean, does it create a hash of the source and destination content and then compares them? If it is so, does it store the hash of the burned content in RAM? Or does it save it in a temporary file on the hard drive? Is there a log file of what is going on?

Just curious to know exactly how this feature works :) And I am referring to Windows Image Burner.

Will there ever be faster CD and DVD discs and writers?

I was thinking about the fact that in the last years I have never seen CDs and DVDs supporting writing/reading speeds higher than 52X and 16X, respectively.

Is this a commercial choice (i.e. manufacturers don't care about optical discs anymore and focus more on flash memories and SSD drives) or a technical limitation (i.e. optical drives cannot support higher writing and reading speeds)?
