auto-replacing my dash makes me sad

I am working in Open Office Writer 3.3.0 and I have come across something a bit odd. When I write a semi-mathematical formula my "-" gets replaced by a "–", a slightly longer dash, and I cannot seem to turn it off in the autocorrect. I am not sure how to. the dash "-" does not appear in the autocorrect table of any language, whereas double-dash "--" does.

Any ideas how to disable this?

Creating a list with guided lines in LibreOffice

I created the following list using LibreOffice manually. That means I created the dotted line by pressing the dot character repeatedly (or keeping it pressed for some time) but anyway I am unable to (vertically) align the numbers properly.

This is the list I manually created

But I am sure there is an easy way to do this type of job in Microsoft Word, I did it several years ago and now forgot it.

(1) How this type of job is officially called (in MS Office)?

(2) Is the same feature available in Libre office Writer? If so, explain how to do it.

Open Office - How to change figure numbering?

In Open Office Writer, I have several figures (Images with captions) on a page, but the figure numbers are ordered incorrectly (e.g. 6, 1, 2, 5, 3, 4).

How can I change their ordering? I can't find where it is possible to do this.

Using search and replace to remove line breaks in Open Office

I've imported a document into Open Office and it has a number of hard returns in wrong places. In MS Word, I could use the search and replace to simply get rid of them all easily, but Open Office's search won't find them. I tried /n with the 'use regular expressions' box checked, but it seems that only looks for 'shift-enter' breaks and not ordinary hard returns. Is there another way to remove them all quickly, or do I have to go manually through the document and remove each one individually. This is a surprising oversight for Open Office.

Copying / applying styles by keyboard shortcut in Open Office - similar to Format Paintbrush?

I would like to achieve a similar effect of using the Format Paintbrush without having to actually press the button each time.

  1. Is it possible to select the Format Paintbrush Tool by keyboard shortcut?
  2. Could it be solved with a macro that copies the selected text or object's style and another one that applies it to another object?

How to move entire headings in LibreOffice Writer?

In documents, text can be a heading 1, heading 2, et cetera.

  heading1
     heading2
        heading3
          ...

For example:

 t1a
    abcd
       ...yyy
 t2a
    efgh
       ...xxx
    ijkl

I want to change it to this:

 t1a
    efgh
       ...xxx
    abcd
       ...yyy
 t2a
    ijkl

How could I do that?

Turn off tooltip in openoffice while scrolling?

When I scroll through an Openoffice.org Writer document I have a constant tooltip with page number and (when applicable) the bullet I might be hovering over.

It frequently obstructs the text and is rarely useful, can I just turn it off permanently? I've looked through the tons of options but haven't found anything to shut it off.

RHEL 5.5, openoffice.org3-3.2.0-9483 (package Vendor: OpenOffice.org).

How do I apply two styles in the same line in LibreOffice?

Problem:

How do I apply two styles in the same line in LibreOffice?

The main problem is that I need two different styles:

  • one for the index and
  • one that is not supposed to appear in the index

Example:

Table_name - author: john

In the index, I only want "table_name". The author should not appear in the index.

Why is my Table of Contents created empty in OpenOffice/LibreOffice?

I have a document and I would like to create a Table of Content.

I tried with Insert > Indexes and Tables > Indexes and Tables... and added a title, then I pressed OK.

But I only got a title and no Table of Content.

How do I add my headlines to the Table of Content? Should they be added automatically?

How to remove rules from a style in OpenOffice/LibreOffice?

When creating a style in LibreOffice, you can "link" them to other rules so that they inherit the other rules styles and only modify specific properties. For example if the default style defines a font and My Style only adds an rule for italics, then changing the font of default will also change everything that is styled with My Style.

The usage of this is simple enough, as you make changes to a style it collects a list of modified properties. These properties are listed for reference in style dbx's Organizer tab:

sceenshot of modify style dbx

However, I cannot figure out how to remove them! Once a property in any of the tabs is touched, an override rule is added to the "style contains" section.

How can I change a property back to a value of "inherited" or simply remove it from the contains list? In the example above, say I want to set the value for indents so that they inherit from the linked style instead of use the 0 value shown?

How do I stop Open Office from automatically changing the date format?

I am trying to enter a date in a document with the following format:

1 September 2010

However, OpenOffice insists on changing it to:

01/09/10

I've looked in the AutoCorrect options and elsewhere and have been unable to find a way to disable this annoying behaviour. Any suggestions?

How to search and replace special characters in LibreOffice / OpenOffice Writer?

I love LibreOffice / OpenOffice, but some tasks we cannot do in it, like mentioned in this question title: search and replace special characters in Writer. Someone does know how to do that?

You can do that tasks in MS Word (for instance, search for "^p", that is paragraph mark, and replace it with "^t", tabulation).

Also, you can do that also in Notepad++ (in showed example, using "\n" and "\t").

But in Writer, although there is a option "regular expressions", I cannot search for special characters with it - I always have to copy+paste text to MS Word/Notepad++, do what I want and copy+paste back to Writer...

Edit #1:

With tabulation mark it functions searching for \t.

What about with paragraph marks or line breaks? It does not. I've already tried \r, \n, \r\n, \n\r, ^p, ^l...

Edit #2: Almost solved by @Linker3000, but what about paragraph marks?
