Client-side encrypted online backup service

I'm very interested in using an online backup service to keep my data safe from malfunctioning hardware. And I am, of course, willing to pay for the service.

However, I don't want my data to be accessible by anyone other than me - and that's including the backup service itself. The online backup services I've seen do seem to use strong cryptography for the connection to their server, and keep the data secure and encrypted on their storage space too. But I what I haven't seen advertised is giving the user an option of encrypting the data with the user's own passphrase, at the client side, so that the service provider cannot have access to the data. Well, without a quantum computer, that is.

I know I could keep my data encrypted by using an encryption software like TrueCrypt, and then back up the encrypted data storage - but I really don't want the hassle of keeping all the data on my home computer constantly encrypted. I also expect there would be some hassle from the backup process. And the whole reason for using an online backup is not having to deal with all the hassle.

Are there online backup services that:

  1. Encrypt all data with my passphrase before it gets sent to the server
  2. Use strong cryptography for the encryption
  3. Do not store or transfer my passphrase anywhere (or keep it stored strictly client-side)

I do realize if I lose my passphrase, the backup becomes useless. This is not a problem, since I'm not going to forget my passphrase. Or if I do, tough luck for me. :)

I also realize that since I'd be most likely using a proprietary software, all it takes from the software provider is an update that makes the software send my passphrase to them. The only true way to ensure privacy would be to use a known open-source software. However, I'm not worried about this risk. (By that thinking, my data is already compromized by any proprietary software I run, regardless of whether it's backup related software or not.)

The software would be mainly for Windows use, but linux support is a nice addition.

Since there are some inane restrictions for cryptographic algorithms in some parts of the world, I'll also mention that I need the service in Europe.

Export Twitter data from Backupify

I signed up for Backupify and added Twitter to it. I now want to export all my status updates and, although the site says that it's possible to export the data, I can't find that functionality anywhere.

Does Google Drive store files locally on your machine?

We've use Google Apps for Business, more specifically Google Drive extensively at work.

So much so if it went down / our data went missing, we would be stuck.

We've already turned on 2 set authentication on all accounts, but to be doubly sure we want to take regular backups. We're looking at Backupify and a couple of others who offer automated backups.

But I was looking at my "Google Drive" folder (bellow) on my machine (Mac); it seems as if these files are sitting on my machine, but looking at the file sizes, plus opening them when not connected to the internet they seem to just be hyperlinks to the files online.

Is there a way to get Google Drive to actually sync a full copy of each document back to your local machine? As this would be an alternative to backing up the docs account.

Online Backup Options for a Mac

This question may overlap somewhat with other backup questions on SuperUser, but, however, I would like to get feedback from people using unlimited online backup services on their Macs.

There was a thorough review made by MacUser last year which left the impression that each of the popular services comes with caveats significant enough to become an issue—e.g. cluttered interfaces or not being able to choose files to backup or slow restores.

I would appreciate if you could share your experience if:

  • you are using online backup services on a Mac, as opposed to a PC
  • it's a paid unlimited backup plan (I have 100Gb+ of data)

How to keep your privacy when using an online backup service?

I have read several recommendations of online backup services. These indeed sound attractive options as they provide a means for off-site backups, and I would expect they ensure your data is backuped thoroughly. However, I particularly dislike the thought of publishing my data online. Is it possible to use an online backup service while keeping your data private?

Remote backup with Amazon S3 [closed]

Does anyone know of some good Mac software to sync a network attached storage device or a drobo to Amazon S3?

I'd love to mail them a storage device for the first dump and then do nightly syncs.

What apps are there to backups/share photos and videos online? [closed]

I'm currently using Picasa but its very limited in space and I think doesn't handle videos.

What other apps are there with similar functionality ?

Please no duplicates Dropbox is already listed.

How much storage is available ?

It would be preferred if there were free.

How should I configure CrashPlan if I want to make sure Code 42 cannot access my data?

CrashPlan offers some very well-priced cloud-backup packages, but one of the issues I have with such services is the fact that, while the data is encrypted, the encryption key is held and known by the service provider. This has kept me from putting certain files in e.g. Dropbox because of how sensitive the information they contain is.

I see that CrashPlan allows password-protecting the decryption key, and using a custom 448-bit Blowfish key. Which of these options will make sure that I—and only I—can access the files backed up to CrashPlan Central? Do they also constitute "Pre-Internet Encryption" (no data is ever transmitted out of the local system without being encrypted first)?

Is there cloud backup that doesn’t re-upload files that have merely been moved? [closed]

I’m currently using Carbonite to backup my files to the cloud and I have noticed that if you move a file from one place to another without making any changes to it the file has to be backed-up again. I’ve also emailed support at JustCloud to ask if they also do this and apparently they do.

Does anyone know of any backup services that don’t re-upload unmodified but moved files? I recently had a fairly significant move around of my files and Carbonite pretty much had to start again, backing-up some 70GB of data, which I felt was rather ridiculous.

Online file storage services

Hey together,

i am looking for a onkine storage / online backup-system.

I tried livedrive around 5 days and be very suprise they even have a single paying user. The software is within such huge bugs and problems, e.g. using only 30% of my bandwidth, crashing 2 times a day, delete and upload new instead of removing.

Maybe you can help me with a good offer.

[Must have]

  • good speed (I can up to 500kb/s upload, so Im not searching anything with 100kb/s only)
  • Share files with others (Share-system with links...)
  • 200gb Space at least, better unlimited
  • unlimited traffic

[Can cost up to 120€/$ per Year]

[Nice to have]

  • Good Online page (livedrive has the nice feature play music, view any document without downloading them with an addon for the browser implemented).
  • dynamic backup (not only by a given time)

How can I backup someone else's Twitter account or Facebook page?

How can I backup the tweets of an account that does not belong to me or the posts of a public Facebook page? All backup services I found on the web require authentication of the Twitter account (username and password).

Online backup provider

We currently use MozyPro to backup around 20 corporate laptops. MozyPro has proven to be problematic and sometimes unreliable. We have considered switching to Carbonite Pro, but they do not support the use of an internet proxy, and according to their support team have no plans to provide proxy support.

What are some other online backup providers that also provide proxy support?

Do online backup services allow you to download your entire backup history?

I'm thinking about signing up for an online backup service, like Carbonite. Both of these keep entire revision histories of your files, not just the latest copies.

So my question: if I want to switch services, or cancel entirely, do any allow you to download your complete backup history, or transfer to another service?

Is there an encrypting DropBox wrapper?

DropBox seems like a useful service, but not one I'd trust any sensitive files with.

Is there an application that encrypts my DropBox files locally before DropBox sees them? Encrypting/decrypting them manually before syncing would be too cumbersome.
