VLC only in Windows 7 system tray?

How can I set the VLC icon only in Windows 7 system tray and not duplicated also in the taskbar?

To be clear (since some of the answers seem to misunderstand what is being asked), the question is not about minimizing to tray, but rather to leave the VLC window open and playing a video, but not show the VLC button on the taskbar (or in the Alt-Tab list).

How to remove "Download Windows 10" icon on Windows 7 System Tray ("official adware")? [duplicate]

Microsoft has slipped adware prompting users to upgrade to Windows 10 into Windows Update, which for some was marked as important. That counts as shady business in my book, more so because as far as I understand it's not free but "free for one year", but even if I'm mistaken, this thing is annoying:

It's an icon in the taskbar, which has a menu of four options related to the offer and no option for removing it. The Windows update in which it came is very deceptive too:

"Update for Windows 7", "Install this update to solve problems in Windows", etc.; clearly not labelled as what it is, I guess I'm glad it didn't also include a browser toolbar nor change my home page.

The file that runs this is, in my case, "C:\Windows\system32\GWX\GWX.exe". Should I nuke the whole folder? The contents of it are:

Or should I just uninstall KB3035583? The description for it is so ambiguous I'm unsure if it's actually something that does more than just provide that icon.

Remove the Microsoft Security Essentials icon

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows 7 for sometime now and so far I don't have a bad word to say about it.

I would like to permanently remove the MSE icon from the task bar and pop-up box, though I would still like to be informed when it detects a threat, etc.

Keep notification area always show on GNOME 3

I've installed GNOME 3 on my Gentoo Linux, it really awesome and I love it.

But here is a little glitch that I don't get used to: The notification area is hide until I hit "Windows" key or move the mouse cursor to the right-bottom corner.

Since I've some program use the notification to indicate their status (for example, my Chinese input method use this to indicate whether I'm in English mode or Chinese mode. And a program that show the CPU temperature on the notification area).

It becomes a little inconvenient if I've to move the cursor or hit "Windows" key just in order to check those status.

So is it possible to make the notification area always show on the screen? Or is it possible to integrate the notification area to menu bar just like GNOME 2.X or XFCE4?

Besides that, I would like to know is it possible to remove the accessibility on the menu bar top-right corner? I don't need it completely, it just a waste of space for me.

Make Windows "Show icon and notifications" by default, but let you hide some

In Windows 7 if you have the Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar option disabled, the setting for individual applications defaults to Only show notifications.

Is there a magical way of changing the default to Show icon and notifications instead of Only show notifications?

Use-case: when a new application comes along and adds an icon to the system tray, it defaults to showing the icon and notifications. I like the majority of the icons down there as they offer quick access to whatever programs are running BUT I still want to selectively hide the few that I do not want to see down there.

If I enable Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar I can't hide any. If I disable it, I have to go through every single application in the list and change the option, then keep my eye on it for any new applications. Hence my question.

Why does my Tray Icon's Behavior occasionally reset Windows 7?

I'm fine with having most of my tray icons hidden, however I want the Outlook Notification envelop to show at all times when I have new messages. Its important for me to know when I have unread emails, as I often miss seeing them come in and they are often important.

I'll change the settings to Show Icon and Notifications, however it randomly seems to reset itself every few days or weeks back to Only Show Notifications

For example, it was working fine this morning, appearing when I had an unread message in my Inbox, and then it suddenly stopped working again. I only noticed it because I went to send an email and realized I had unread messages. I've only been here a few hours, so haven't signed off, locked my machine, rebooted it, or restarted Outlook.

Here's a picture of how my Task Bar usually looks. I don't like the Windows 7 big icons, and prefer two rows of items since I usually have multiple things open at once. I'm not sure if that setup has anything to do with why my Tray Icon behavior keeps getting reset or not.

I noticed that I got both Windows Security Updates, and Microsoft Office updates on this day. I am beginning to believe that this is a bug in either Windows 7 or Office which resets the default tray behavior when an update occurs. That would explain the seemingly random times that the behavior gets reset.

It should also be noted that when the envelop disappears, it still shows up in my tray icons, however the icon is hidden and I need to click the drop-down arrow to see it. This makes me think it's the Windows Updates causing the problem. Unfortunately, I didn't write down the days this has happened on in the past to see if it relates to other Windows or Office updates to be sure.

Make specific tray icon always show for all profiles in Windows 7

I'm setting up a Windows 7 machine that will sit out in the open and be shared by a lot of people. I have added a shortcut to the all users start menu to run a program that sits in the system tray. I want the tray icon for this program to always be visible by default, no matter who logs in. A user can turn it off on their profile if they really want to, but I need it to at least start out set as always visible. How can I do this?

I would rather not show all the icons, in part for the same reason they are hidden in the first place: I don't want the clutter. Also, as this is a public computer there is another program called DeepFreeze running that also has a system tray icon, and I don't want that icon to show all the time.

Windows 7 notification area settings are locked

I have an administrator account on this Windows 7 Enterprise x64 machine.

Windows 7 notification area settings are locked. If I right click on the system tray (where the clock is) and click on 'Customize notification icons', the screen that pops up has all the notification icon options disabled so I can't change them. Also at the top it says 'Some settings are managed by your system administrator. Why can't I change some settings?'

If you click on that 'Why can't I change some settings?' hyperlink a help window pops up saying to check the group policy settings. So I open the policy editor and peruse to: User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar

But all the policies there are 'Not configured'...so I'm assuming that's not the prob? Or I'm looking in the wrong place?

Any ideas how I can unlock the notification icon options?

Turn system icons (notifications) on/off resets on restart

I noticed that when I turn off some of the the language input indicator in the system icons / notifications area, it doesn't save the state and turns back on on restart. Is this a known issue? What could be causing this?

Specifically what I'm referring to:

• In notifications area, click the small arrow
• Click Customize
• Click "Turn system icons on or off"

I noticed a comment here says the change is for the session only. Why would that be intended behavior...?

How else can I turn the language input indicator off permanently? (It takes an awful lot of space).

What determines the order of applications in the Windows 7 system icon tray?

Something that I have wondered about, I notice that despite changing the order of running some of my applications, even stopping and restarting them or even between reboots.....they seem to occupy the same display position in my system icon tray.

So I am curious as to what is determining the display order in Windows?

Can it be changed? If so, how.

How to show the week number on the Windows system tray calendar?

I am using Windows 7, and sometimes I would like to check the current week number from the calendar. However, by default, the Windows system tray calendar does not show the week numbers.

Dismissing systray balloons with the keyboard?

This is probably a supplementary question to how to access the systray using the keyboard...

I've read that, and done some googling (google fu lacking, or there really is no answer), but I can't find a nice quick keyboard shortcut to dismiss those info balloons that apps in the system tray choose to display every now and then. The hints for access in the linked question can't be used to close the balloon (and least when I've tried them here).

Now I know I can wait for a timeout and they'll go away but if I can just hit , that'd be fanstastic. So... anyone aware of a keyboard shortcut?

Windows 7 System Tray Date Display Not Appearing

I'm using Windows 7 RC and for some reason, the date won't show at all on my system tray. It used to for a while, but one day it just stopped (I didn't even notice it until someone pointed it out).

So I've been trying to fix it, by customizing the format of the date, resetting to defaults, etc... But nothing works, it still doesn't show.

The time appears fine.

Notification area Windows 7: The missing option?

The settings for the notification area in Windows 7 have three options:

• Show icon and notifications
• Hide icon and notifications
• Only show notifications

Well here is my problem. I have a misbehaving application that doesn't have any settings to turn off notifications. And it keeps nagging me to update itself even though I know that the next version is not running properly. I do not want to see the reminder notification popup at all. But after all the application have some useful options that I use daily to perform tasks. These are accessible from the notification area/system tray.

I would like to silence the application by setting the option to something like:

• Only show icon

or

• Show icon and hide notifications

Otherwise I am forced to use the option "Hide icon and notifications" which makes me have to use at least one more mouse click every time I use the application.

A small problem in the great scheme of things... but very annoying (to me at least).

Is there any way to make the notification area behave like this?
