Tips for improving Windows 7 performance on a netbook [closed]

Windows 7 doesn't run very well on my HP Mini (Atom 280N with 2GB DDR2).

Does anyone have anyor any tips for improving the general performance of Windows 7 on netbooks?

How do I load windows 7 on my netbook from a USB key? Failing on CD/DVD Driver

I'm trying to load windows 7 on my brand new Acer Aspire One netbook. I made my USB key bootable etc. and windows begins to load from it. During the first stage of the install, it stops and says it can't find a required CD/DVD driver, there isn't one on the machine. The bios shows an IDE CD, but i can't disable it. I'm not sure what driver it's looking for or why, but i can't get past it.

Acer Aspire One netbook, 2gb ram, 250gb drive. Current OS: Vista Installing: Windows 7

Is there any reason not to run Win7 Ultimate on a netbook - compared to the other versions of Win7?

Sorry - should have been clear in my original post. I have an MSDN sub so cost isn't a concern. I'm more concerned about performance or if another version is better suited to netbooks.

Why do so many netbooks have a base resolution of 1024 x 600

I'm running a piece of software the requires a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. I was thinking about getting a netbook, but many of the netbooks I have looked at have a resolution of 1024 x 600. Why would they drop the below such a standard resolution?

How to disable my netbook's touchpad when a usb mouse is connected

This is the first computer I have ever bought and I couldn't bring it home without a mouse of its own. I'm trying to disable the touchpad but the only option I find is by uninstalling the drivers, which I think is a bit drastic, the buttons for activation and deactivation are disabled (I'm using windows 7 starter).

Do you have any idea of how to disable the touch pad when an external mouse is hooked up?

Netbook screen too small, Software fix?

I have a netbook with a maximum screen resolution of 1024x600. I'm running a dualboot Ubuntu10.10 & Backtrack4r2, and I'm having some trouble with windows whose "height" was larger than 600px. Buttons end up below the screen, and I can't click 'Ok' or 'Cancel' or 'Apply'.

When my OS was still Windows7, I didn't have any problems because I can resize all of the windows that I use. Most of windows in linux (esp. in KDE settings), the windows has a fixed height.

Is there any workarounds to my problem?

Force Windows 8 Metro apps to run lower resolutions below 1024x768?

I have installed Windows 8 Consumer Preview on my Samsung NB30 netbook. I was very excited to try it on this little box cause it has a touchscreen and Windows 8 is supposed to be optimized for touchscreen devices. The installation was quick and smooth and all the drivers seem to work well including the one for the touchscreen.

There is one major problem, though: when I try to tap one of the tiles on the Metro UI it displays

This app can't open. The screen resolution is too low for this app to run.

The machine has Intel Atom N450 processor and Intel GMA 3159 integrated graphics card and has maximum resolution 1024x600. I've read that Metro requires at least 1024x768.

Is there a solution to this problem? Is there a way to force Windows 8 Metro apps to run in lower resolutions?

Acer Aspire One has a 13 GB Recovery Partition.

Is it possible to backup this partition to a network share?

If so, how do I do that?

Most user-friendly (and speediest) Linux flavour for a netbook

I'm interested in some feedback for the most user friendly but also speediest (speed matters more over user friendly) flavours of Unix that work best with netbooks, namely an Acer one.

I need one that doesn't require recompilation to get wifi working (ubuntu), and flash works too.

I'm using Windows 7 and Chrome at present, but it can sometimes freeze up for 5+ seconds.

How much will full-disk encryption slow down a netbook?

I've been comfortable using TrueCrypt volumes to protect various sets of files on my computers. But I've gathered there can be more convenience and security to be had be encrypting the full hard disk, since everything will be encrypted.

I purchased a netbook recently (an Acer Aspire One), and wonder how much of an impact an always-on encryption process will have. The netbook has a somewhat slow processor, but runs acceptably as it is. Visual Studio is usable, an important criteria.

On any decent machine, with faster, and multiple, processors, this is likely a minor issue. But given the slower processors in netbooks, will full-disk encryption with TrueCrypt have any serious effect?

"This CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode." - Installing Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit on a netbook with a 64-bit Intel Atom CPU

I tried installing Windows 7 Ultimate SP 1, 64-bit on a netbook (Lenovo IdeaPad S110), which has the Intel Atom N2800 (1.86 GHz) as its processor, but I get the following error message when the Windows 7 installation DVD is loading:

It says "Attempting to load a 64-bit application, however this CPU is not compatible with 64-bit mode".

The Intel Atom N2800 is a 64-bit CPU according to its webpage.

I am wondering why the Windows 7 installer shows this error message, despite this. Is there something I must configure first before installing Windows 7, 64-bit? Or is the netbook not compatible with a 64-bit OS?

I am trying to format the netbook and install Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, instead.

Other details:

• The netbook has 2 GB RAM.
• The netbook initially had Windows 7 Starter (32-bit) installed.
• I checked the CPU's specs with CPU-Z. It detects that the processor is indeed Intel Atom N2800, but it does not say that the processor is 64-bit (AMD64 or EM64T):
  

A minimal Linux distribution for my ASUS EEE PC

I recently bought myself a ASUS EEE 1000HE and I intend to use it for note-taking and light browsing at the University. The machine has a 10" screen so the interface needs to be very compact.

I've already tried:

• EEEbuntu: Very nice driver support and out of the box experience. But I feel that it is too slow booting and the general experience is too heavy in my opinion.
• Moblin 2: Looks very cool, boots just fine but is way too unstable to use. Also find it annoying that I can't find hotkey documentation anywhere.

Any Netbook OS recommendation welcome (although those specific to my model would be great).

There is an entire jungle of distributions out there, so if you've been on a safari, please share your experience.

Windows 7 netbook goes to sleep despite settings - Why & How?

For the life of me, I can't understand why my Acer Aspire One netbook goes to sleep despite all settings telling it not to sleep:

1. The netbook is explicitly told not to "put the computer to sleep" when AC power is plugged in:

And it is also told explicitly to do nothing when I close the lid:

So, why does it keep sleeping after several hours, when the lid is closed, but it is streaming Internet radio via IE9?

Is this a bug in Windows 7? A bug in the Acer Aspire One line of netbooks?

Do (some) netbooks not have Hibernate even as an optional setting under Windows 10?

I recently bought my third netbook. This one is a Lenovo Ideapad 100S that came with Windows 10.

This setup does not include "Hibernate" as a possibility along with "Sleep", "Shut down", and "Restart".

I found an article online that says "Hibernate" is now an option that you have to enable and has instructions on how to do so.

But when I follow these instructions I do not get the new Hibernate option as illustrated. This is the dialog on my system after following the instructions:

My previous netbook was a HP Mini that came with Windows 7. In most ways that netbook was a little less powerful than the new netbook. Yet it still allowed me to user Hibernate even with a small internal drive and even with its RAM upgraded to the maximum possible 2G.

Is this a new limitation imposed upon netbooks by Microsoft? Or is there some reason it's not possible on this particular netbook? Or is there some extra step required to enable it on an Ideapad 100S?
