What is the difference between Office 365 and Office 2013

Microsoft recently released the preview of Office 2013. When I went to the download site, it was filled with Microsoft Office 365 information. I am curious; what is the difference between the two software packages?

How do I get rid of all caps ribbon titles in Office 2013?

Installed Office 2013 on Windows 8 today. It's great, except for one thing, the all caps ribbon titles are inconsistent with the title case titles everywhere else in Windows 8. Is there a registry setting that will let me change this?

Powerpoint 2013 - Please wait while we load pictures

Ever since I "upgraded" to Powerpoint 2013 I have run into several annoyances. One of those is that every time I need to change a picture in a presentation, the screen below pops up first. Usually it only takes a few seconds and I can click "Work offline" to bypass it, but over time with lots of pictures to replace it gets very annoying. Is there a way to disable the automatic search of online pictures?

Please wait while we load pictures

Transparent background in Visio 2013

I'm using Visio 2013 and I'm not able so save my drawings with a transparent background (background always ends up with white color)

The sheet background is "no background".

enter image description here

When I click "save as .PNG" (or .gif) there opens up a options menue. There I can also choose a background color but there are just colors and no "transparent" options.

Thanks in advance!

Remove "SkyDrive Pro" from context menu?

I've recently installed Microsoft Office 2013 and noticed a new SkyDrive Pro option is added to the context menu when I right click on a file or folder. I'm not using SharePoint and do not want that extra menu option there.

How do I remove SkyDrive Pro from the Context Menu?

"Incompatible Office products are installed on your machine" when opening Office documents or browsing OneDrive or SharePoint Site

I'm running Office 2013 Pro Plus 32-bit (MSI-based) on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. When trying to open an Excel, Word, or PowerPoint documents I get this error message:

Sorry, we can't perform this action. Incompatible Office products are installed on your machine. If you have an administrator, please contact them for help.

After clicking OK the file opens and functions normally.

Further, if I attempt to browse OneDrive or a SharePoint site through Word or Excel the same error is displayed. After clicking OK I can continue browsing the connected service. Unfortunately, removing the services doesn't solve the problem.

How can I fix this?

Additional Details

  • The error is only displayed when opening the first document in the Office program. Once the error has been displayed, I can open other documents and don't get the error.
  • I only get the error when opening documents stored on a mapped network drive. No error is displayed when opening documents stored on my local hard drive.

In the Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft Office Alerts log I found an entry with event ID 300 and Source "Microsoft Office 15 Alerts" that has this text:

Microsoft Excel

My research/Attempted Solutions:

  • I tried deleting my Personal Macro workbook. No change.
  • I found this Microsoft forum post which suggests uninstalling SharePoint Designer 2010, but I don't have that product installed.
  • The forum refers to KB2920798, which I installed today, but I'm able to open my Office files, contrary to the KB's claim that This update provides you an informative message when you cannot open an Office document. I do not have any click-to-run Office products installed.
  • Over the weekend I installed SimCity 3000 Unlimited which is an older game. It installed "MS Access 97 SP2 Runtime. Update: Uninstalling this didn't help.
  • I also installed available Windows Updates this weekend, about 20-30 of them to my recollection.

Lync 2013 Does Not Maintain IM Window Size Or Position

I am using Windows 7 64-bit and I just upgraded from Lync 2010 to Lync 2013.

In Lync 2010, after you closed an IM, the next IM opened would be the previous IM's size and position. From my experience so far, this is not the case with Lync 2013.

How do I make Lync 2013 save the IM window size and position?

Details that may or may not make a difference:

  1. I have a dual monitor setup and my Lync windows are typically on my 2nd monitor.

  2. With respect to position and size, I usually drag the IM to the top right corner of my 2nd monitor and then resize the bottom of the window by dragging it down and snapping it to the bottom of the monitor.

Get Office 2013 to open files local instead of on SkyDrive?

I've synced my SkyDrive-Account to a local Folder. For Office 2010 everything is as it should be.

But Office 2013 annoys me: When I open a file in my local Folder (which is synced to SkyDrive) it will try and download the file again, even though it already sits on my hard drive.

Even more annoying is saving the file (or save as): I just want to save the file to my local folder (and let the SkyDrive sync handle the upload), but Office 2013 insists to upload the file itself, which takes Ages and using save as the choices are some online folders when I just want the Standard save as Dialog.

So how do I revert Office 2013 behaviour for local files to the old, even when the local files are being synced to SkyDrive?

Microsoft Office require administrator credentials on first run

I install Microsoft Office 2010 or 2013 on a new computer.
I launch Word or Excel from the Administrator account. I am then asked to choose if I want to use the recommended settings. I accept, and the question is never asked again for this account.

First things first

When a new user log into the computer and run Word/Excel/Whatever, this very same question is asked about the recommended settings.
The problem is: the user must provide administrator credentials to validate his choice. Else the user can't run the software.

I see I can disable this screen.
But I'd like to know if/how I can disable the need to provide administrator credentials.

How to get rid of prompts for credentials connecting to proxy Server officeimg.vo.msecnd.net in Office 2013?

I have experienced this issue mainly with Excel, Word and Powerpoint 2013, where there is constant pop-up box asking for login credentials as it tries to connect to officeimg.vo.msecnd.net

I have searched and found one of the solution, to prevent Office from connecting to the internet (Options > Trust Center Settings > Allow Office to connect to internet).

This solution worked for sometime, but am back to square one again. Solutions are sought, as this is a nagging problem, I am sure others would have experienced the same.

How can I print to OneNote without splitting the document?

I've noticed with longer pdf's, after sending to OneNote with Print and selecting a Page to insert to, OneNote ends up splitting my document into its own page and subpages (1 for each page). I want the whole document on the page that I select instead of having it split like that. It inserts everything to one page when my pdf is 4 pages long, but splits it when I have 6 pages, so I'm assuming the cutoff is at 5 pages or something. How can I disable this behavior?

Edit: Forgot to mention this is in OneNote 2013 in case the behavior is different across versions.

Office 2013 - Save Window issue

I am unable to see the list of files in my SaveAs window. I am also not able to adjust it. is there some setting that I can change?

My SaveAs window looks like this: SaveAs Office 2013

Edit: When I click HideFolders, this is how the window looks like. There are no third party addons installed. Safe mode results in the same behavior.

HideFolders Clicked

This is happening on all office 2013 products. The rest of the applications are fine.
