Hosting a Maven repository on github

I have a fork of a small open sourced library that I'm working on on github. I'd like to make it available to other developers via maven, but I don't want to run my own Nexus server, and because it's a fork I can't easily deploy it to oss.sonatype.org.

What I'd like to do is to deploy it to github so that others can access it using maven. What's the best way to do this?

Find Oracle JDBC driver in Maven repository

I want to add the oracle jdbc driver to my project as dependency (runtime scope) - ojdbc14. In MVNrepository site the dependency to put in the POM is:

Maven does not find JUnit tests to run

I have a maven program, it compiles fine. When I run mvn test it does not run any tests (under TESTs header says There are no tests to run.).

I've recreated this problem with a super simple setup which I will include below as well as the output when run with -X.

The unit tests run fine from eclipse (both with its default junit package and when I instead include the junit.jar downloaded by maven). Also mvn test-compile correctly creates the class under test-classes. I am running this on OSX 10.6.7 with Maven 3.0.2 and java 1.6.0_24.

How do I tell Maven to use the latest version of a dependency?

In Maven, dependencies are usually set up like this:

Now, if you are working with libraries that have frequent releases, constantly updating the <version> tag can be somewhat annoying. Is there any way to tell Maven to always use the latest available version (from the repository)?

IntelliJ inspection gives "Cannot resolve symbol" but still compiles code

Platform: IntelliJ Community Edition 10.0.3
SDK: jdk1.6.0_21
OS: Windows 7

So I have a strange situation with IntelliJ that has me completely stumped. I setup a Maven project and add log4j as a dependency in the pom.xml file. The IDEA inspections run fine and my unit tests all compile and run.

I then added hunnysoft's jmime library to my local maven repository using the mvn install:install-file as follows.

Maven installed the jar file just fine into my local repository.

I then went into IntelliJ's Settings => Maven => Repository Services and Updated my local repository (so that IntelliJ would reindex the repository contents).

Finally, I added the following dependency to my pom.xml file (just above the log4j dependency).

I now create a new class as follows:

Now for the weirdness. IntelliJ's intention mechanism picks up and recognizes the Logger import in the maven pom file just fine. However, for all of the hunnysoft imports it reports: "Cannot resolve symbol 'ByteString/Field/FieldBody'", BUT Build => Compile 'StackOverflowQuestion.java' compiles everything correctly and the unit test I created for this class runs fine (though the intentions mark the call to create() as a problem area too).

So somewhere, somehow IntelliJ is ignoring the jmime.jar file for the intention subsystem. I'm confused because the log4j dependency works fine and everything compiles and runs fine. F12 ("Go To Declaration") works on the Logger import, but breaks on all the jmime imports.

Oh, one other thing, if I go to the 'Packages' view in the "Projects" window the "com.hunnysoft.jmime" package appears and I can see ALL of the classes I imported in the code snippet above under "Libraries". Removing the above dependency from the pom.xml file causes this package to disappear and the compilation breaks.

It appears that the inspection's classpath is broken, but there does not seem to be a setting for this anywhere in the Settings => Intentions | Compiler areas (not that I expected any such settings, I believe the IDEA should already know the correct classpath based on the pom file and JDK).

As a final experiment I created a brand new standard J2SE application project (without using maven) and added the jmime.jar file directly to the project as one of its libraries. I run into exactly the same problems as described above in this new project.

My best guess is that perhaps the problem might be a missing dependency issue. But AFAIK jmime is supposed to be self contained (JarAnalyzer doesn't come up with anything, but I'm not sure it would if a dependency jar is missing).

So, anyone have any IDEAs?

Maven "Module" vs "Project" (Eclipse, m2eclipse plugin)

I'm a beginner at Maven and I've played with it from a command line point of view a little, so now I was trying to use it in Eclipse; I installed the m2eclipse plugin to do so.

But I'm stumped from the very beginning! Apparently I've missed a bit of terminology somewhere along the line. I can't keep track of all these new Maven terms... What is a Maven Project, and what is a Maven Module? These are my options when creating a new project in the Maven category in Eclipse.

Maven is not working in Java 8 when JavaDoc tags are incomplete

Since I use Maven I have been able to build and install in my local repository projects that have incomplete java doc tags (for example, a missing parameter).

However, since I migrated to Java 8 (1.8.0-ea-b90) Maven is absolutely strict about missing documentation tags and show me lots of JavaDoc errors related to JavaDoc problems when I try to build or install a project where the JavaDoc is not "perfect". Some of the projects I am trying to compile and install in my local repository are third party projects from which I do not have control. So the workaround of just fixing all the javadocs in all these projects does not seem to be feasable in my scenario.

Force maven update

I imported my working project on other computer so it started to download dependencies.

Apparently in the meantime my internet connection crashed. Now I get:

How to solve "Plugin execution not covered by lifecycle configuration" for Spring Data Maven Builds

I am trying to work with Spring Data and Neo4j. I started by trying to follow this guide linked to by the main site. In particular I based my pom.xml off of the Hello World example file. Here is a snip from my pom.xml for the plugin that is causing the issues...

When maven says "resolution will not be reattempted until the update interval of MyRepo has elapsed", where is that interval specified?

I am fairly new to maven. Have been experimenting with Nexus and Artifactory for in-house artifact repos.

With both of them, I occasionally hit an artifact that comes from some 3rd-party repo that I haven't configured yet. So, I'll get an error message from the maven client saying that an artifact can't be found. I'll go into the Nexus/Artifactory UI and set up the Virtual/Proxy repo that I need. No problem.

Then, back on my local machine, I'll run the maven client again (without -U) and get something like this:

Failure to find org.jfrog.maven.annomojo:maven-plugin-anno:jar:1.4.0 in http://myrepo:80/artifactory/repo was cached in the local repository, resolution will not be reattempted until the update interval of MyRepo has elapsed or updates are forced -> [Help 1]

Now, I understand what this means, and can simply re-run my command with -U, and things usually work fine from there on out. However, I find this error message to be extremely unintuitive and am trying to spare my co-workers some headaches. So I've been poking around trying to figure out if there is some place that I can modify this update interval setting. I've tried various instances of the updatePolicy tag in my settings.xml file, as well as experimenting with several of the cache period settings in Artifactory and Nexus. Nothing seems to be making any difference. Not shocking because this doesn't seem exactly related to what the updatePolicy setting seems to be for, and as for nexus/artifactory, I'm guessing that their cache timeout settings are more for how they cache failures between themselves and remote 3rd-party repositories.

So, I guess these are my questions:

  1. Is the update interval that is mentioned in this error message a client-side or server-side setting?
  2. If client-side, how do I configure it?
  3. If server-side, does anyone know how/if Nexus/Artifactory expose these settings?

Maven in Eclipse: step by step installation

I have spent all day on the Maven site reading the 5- and 30-minute tutorials, and trialing Maven out for the first time.

I want to install a Maven plugin and use it to start building Maven projects from Eclipse.

Despite an honest effort, I have been unable to find a comprehensive tutorial on any Maven plugin. M2E, which seems like the de facto standard, has nothing but broken (or recursive) links on their site.

I can't tell if I even installed the plugin correctly, or how to use it.

Does anyone know of a good step-by-step guide to M2E or any other plugin? One that comes with good installation documentation, along with a solid explanation of its features and proper uses?

I can't be the only developer who has ever had this frustration. Either that or I am looking in all the wrong places...

Maven error "Failure to transfer..."

I am trying to set up a project using Maven (m2eclipse), but I get this error in Eclipse:
