So I'm going to give Linux Mint a whirl. As I understand it, /home is where users' content like documents, downloads, and media will be stored.
Because my SSD hard drive is small, I'd like to use a USB hard drive for /home. This raises a couple of questions:
- Is there anything inherently wrong or bad in doing this?
- Will it be reasonably safe and reliable, compared to using an internal SATA hard drive?

I am running Ubuntu and Linux Mint in VMWare. In the display settings, none of the 16:9 aspect ratio resolutions are available, including the commonly used 1920x1080 resolution. How can I enable this?

I have a headless linux mint machine that I use for a file server and other things. It's been working great for me for a few years, but there's one issue - my cat likes to hang out on top of it, and when she climbs off and on she occasionally steps on the power button and shuts off the machine.
Is there an easy way to change the behavior of the power button so it requires an extremely long duration press (10 seconds or so) or multiple presses in order to do anything?

After doing an apt-get dist-upgrade, unicode characters including Chinese and Japanese cannot be displayed in Chrome's tab titles. They are correctly displayed elsewhere (e.g. page content, bookmarks, etc.)
I have already tried
1. apt-get purge google-chrome-stable and reinstall
2. create new profile in chrome
3. rm -rf ~/.config/google-chrome
Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 2TB Western Digital MyBook Essential External Hard-disk. I wanted to use the Hard-disk as an internal hard-drive for my PC running Linux Mint. So, I dis-assembled it, and took out the SATA Hard-disk. Now, I assembled it into my PC using the SATA port.
The hard-disk's partition are not recognized now. In GParted. it shows as follows:
I then took out the hard-drive and assembled it back into its external USB case. It is recognized just fine now.
I am stumped. What might be causing this? The hard-drive is recognized just fine in its external USB case but NOT when connected through internal SATA.

I am trying to figure out why Ubuntu and Linux Mint only run in Software Rendering Mode on Virtualbox. My motherboard supports hardware virtualization and it is turned on, and I have installed the Guest Additions succesfully. Both OSs are extremely sluggish.
I am running an MSI GS70 laptop with a Core i7 processor and a GTX 765M gpu with optimus.
I have turned on 3d acceleration, given the maximum GPU allowance, updated my GPU driver to 326.80, installed guest additions. All of these things helped slightly but have not solved the problem, Linux Mint is still showing that I am running in software rendering mode only.
Anything I can try, or questions I should be asking?

I've noticed that all the themes leave me with those large gray/metal window borders, which I really don't like.
How can I edit this, and why do most themes simply change how the taskbar looks?

I recently bought a Bluetooth headset (Philips SHB4000), and got it to stop sounding like a phone after I told Linux (Mint) to use A2DP rather than HSP/HFP.
However, there's still an annoying crackling sound that I'd like to get rid of.
Some googling suggested that the "bitpool size" might be to blame, but I couldn't find any info on how to increase it on Linux. I know it's probably in some config file somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

I've got a swap partition, but the System Monitor in Linux Mint says, 'Swap not available'. I guess I've forgot to set 'Use as: swap' on install.
How to fix this?

I use gnome-do a lot and usually I summon it using [Super] + [Space]. It works just fine on my desktop PC (Linux Mint 11) but on my new ThinkPad T420 (Linux Mint 13) it didn't work that well. I had to either tap super or space twice to open the gnome-do popup. I quickly realized that this was happening due to the keyboard shortcut for menu (super / windows button). I don't need the menu shortcut for anything.
I already checked in Preferences -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts but there was no such setting as "Menu" or "Start menu" or anything like that. Where can I disable the keyboard shortcut for menu?

I just switched from Ubuntu to Mint and I'd like to remove the Mint-branded Google custom search "feature" which does some strange things to the styling of the results page.
I went into Synaptic and removed mint-search-addon but it didn't help.
