Can I "transfer" my Windows 7 license to a virtual machine running on the same computer?

I've read the blog post on license transfer, but I'm not clear in the case where I already have a licensed, activated copy of Windows 7 running on my PC but want to move that license to a VM running in Ubuntu on the same PC. Am I allowed?

Installing legal older versions of Windows XP

For testing purposes, I need to install a Windows XP Home environment in a virtual machine.

The thing here is I don't have a license and Microsoft won't sell it anymore. What can I do about it?

Buy old Windows version now and still get the upgrade for free?

We have a little office for our local sports club here. In this office we have three PCs which are all running on Ubuntu.

Because all of the PC users in this office are not that well educated in using Linux, I want to upgrade all three PCs to Windows 10.

Can I get three cheap Windows XP copies and just upgrade them for free? (I know, until 29th July.) Or is the upgrade restricted for copies that are sold before a special date?

Which alternatives I've got to get Windows for these 3 PC's? Our club isn't that big and we have to save money where we can. :)

Windows 7 and Vista Activation FAQ: How do language, version, 64-bit or 32-bit, and source affect ability to install and transfer Windows licenses?

We get a lot of questions on Super User about Windows activation and licensing. This question is an attempt to answer the most common questions in one place with a canonical answer.

When reinstalling Windows, the following questions often come up:

  • Can I transfer the copy of Windows from my old computer to a new one?

  • Does the license key on the sticker on my computer work on any computer?

  • If I have a 32-bit version, can I install a 64-bit version?

  • I have an OEM version of Windows, but only a retail disk. Can I still use it?

  • I want to install Windows with a different language. Do I need a new license in that language?

  • I changed some hardware. Will I be able to reactivate my computer?

  • Can I back up my activation before doing a reinstall?

  • How many computers can I install my license on?

  • Do I have to deactivate my old installation before transferring a license? If so, how?

  • How does licensing work in Windows ?

  • What are the restrictions on transferring, reinstalling, and changing versions of Windows?

Where I can I legally download Windows 7 installation .ISO files? [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate:
Where do I download Windows 7 (legally from Microsoft)?

Disclaimer: I'm primarily a Linux/Unix person, so all this Windows licensing stuff is new to me.

Where I can I legally download Windows 7 installation .ISO files? (And will it work with my OEM manufacturer provided license?)

Let's say I have friend or family member that comes to me with a laptop that they need help with. This laptop was purchased from ${BigBox Store} and did not come either Installation CDs, or a manufacturer's Recovery CDs and not knowing any better they didn't opt to create a Recovery CD. Additionally, we are out of warranty so there is no (free) way to get the Recovery CDs from the manufacturer (plus they are loaded with a bunch of crapware anyway). And to top things off the installation is completely hosed...as in fresh install is the only way to go.

Luckily we still have that little license sticker on the bottom of the laptop, so he does own a license (or does the manufacturer own the license?), but we just don't have access to any installation media.

It looks like can obtain ESD installation files (whatever those are) here or I can get an .ISOs from a legal torrent. The former doesn't work me as I'm on Linux and the latter seems kind of sketchy.

  • Will his OEM license that was provided with laptop work?
  • Is it possible to legally obtain the Windows 7 installation media that matches the appropriate license?
  • Where can I do this?
  • How can I assure that I have a legitimate, untampered and trustworthy .ISO file?
  • Can I get it in a .ISO format (all my machines run Linux, a .exe doesn't help me very much)?
  • Who owns the license? My friend who bought the laptop or the manufacturer?

Can we use Windows 7 Home Premium for work?

I'd like our company to buy me a new laptop, but as I want quadcore i7 720QM, there are a lot of models with Windows 7 Home Premium, and few with Windows 7 Professional. I have looked in the edition comparison table and I can say that I don't need any of the features exclusive to Professional.

The question is: Can I legally use Windows 7 Home Premium at work?

What are the license(s) of the Linux man pages?

What is the license on the Linux man pages? GPL, Public Domain, etc? The Wikipedia page about the man doesn't appear to have any info about the licensing status of the man pages.

Can I transfer a Windows 7 license to another computer? [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate:

I was thinking of buying Windows 7 Ultimate to be installed on an old computer. In due time, I will be giving this old computer away.

The question is:

  • Will I have trouble transferring the Windows 7 Ultimate license to another PC?
  • If yes, do I need to watch out for any issues?
  • What exactly is Microsoft's stance/policies towards license transfers?
  • How many times can I transfer before it becomes illegal?

Making a cracked or activated windows uncracked

I have a PC which has windows 7 license but I installed windows from an image I downloaded and it is already activated. For validating genuine Microsoft, I need to enter my own product key but the necessary activation tools do not exist in my windows folder. What should I do?

I googled stuff but because the keywords are too broad I couldn't find a useful tool.

DAZ doesn't work, activation button doesn't show up.

enter image description here

When I enter my original key to Windows Anytime Upgrade, I get this error:

enter image description here

When I attempt using slmgr, I get this error: enter image description here

I used sfc /scannow And this is the situation enter image description here

Now slmgr is existing, I entered slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX (replacing X es with the cd key) the operation successful. Now I have installed Microsoft Security essentials, which means the problem is solved.

Main steps are here

  1. Open command prompt (cmd) in admin mode
  2. Enter "sfc /scannow"
  3. Enter slmgr.vbs -ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
  4. Success

Acquire Windows XP License Keys Legally

I'd like to get my hands on to legal Windows XP keys so that I could setup a few virtual machines. I'm a software developer and this would be greatly useful.

I'm willing to buy them (cheaply) if needed but I've not been able to identify a source for legal Windows XP keys. Is it possible for a previous user to resell Windows XP or is this against Microsoft's terms?

I am aware of MSDN Subscriptions, but I was hoping to keep this entire project within $50 (USD). I only need two to four keys...

(Note: The legal portion is extremely important. I don't even want to be in the gray here...)

If I buy the Windows 8 Pro upgrade, can I do multiple fresh installs?

My understanding is that when I first upgrade, I can choose to upgrade as a fresh install.

If I want to do another fresh install in the future, can I do that? I tend to reinstall Windows every 1-3 years, to get back to a clean system.

If it makes a difference, I am running an OEM version of Windows 7 Home.

Is my Windows 7 x86 license key valid for a x64 installation of Windows? [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate:

I've just got a new laptop with Windows 7 x86 Home Premium installed, however I ideally I'd like to be running a 64-bit operating system:

  • Is my Windows license key "generic" (in that it entitles me to install either a x86 or x64 edition of Windows), or does this licence key specific to the x86 version of Windows?

  • Is there any way of me installing and running Windows 7 Home Premium x64 using my x86 license key?

How can I upgrade from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit?

I just ordered a laptop, and it came with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I want Vista Home Premium 64-bit on it. I'm planning a reinstall. Does anyone know if my product key for Vista 32-bit will also work for Vista 64-bit for an OEM copy? As far as I know, I just need to get the 64-bit media. Is this correct? Thanks.

Update

The laptop is a Dell XPS M1330, and its hardware is supported. Dell would even sell it with 64-bit. However, it was significantly more expensive for lower specs, and I couldn't get it in red.

How can I change the license key on Windows-8

I have Windows-8 running. I set it up at home using my own license key. However now I need to change the license key to use it at work.

In the past I've managed to do this by editing the OOBETimer file in the windows registry to deactivate Windows and then I could re-activate it with the new key. I can't do this on Windows-8.

Does anyone know how to do this?

How can I return a Microsoft License delivered with a Dell computer?

I have to change my current single-core Pentium computer to a new Dell XPS8300.

Unfortunately, I'm deadly allergic to Microsoft and someone where I work says I can return the Microsoft Windows that comes with it as long I don't boot nor open/burn the copy.

I would like to know if it's true, since Dell has no option to have Ubuntu:

No configurations are valid for the chosen filters

I tried this link. Will it be easier to sell the copy or return it to Microsoft?
