I use LibreOffice Calc to make lists of programs with different parameters to run on an hpc cluster. For each batch of commands I must do a find and replace on the smart quotes, as they cause errors in command line arguments. It would be nice to cut this step out of my work flow. Does anyone know how I might change the default punctuation used?
Edit: Apparently the title font transforms dumb quotes into smart quotes.
Smart quotes have a different symbol depending on if they are at the start or end (“ ”)
Dumb quotes use the same symbol for the start and the stop ( " )

A text file of a few pages and several paragraphs was read into LibreOffice Writer and needs to be double spaced throughout the document. The sequence:
Format -> paragraph -> Indents & Spacing -> Line spacing -> Double
affects only the paragraph where the cursor is positioned. Searching the web and help has not turned up a way to double space the document. (Although I'm certain I've done it before. Alas, I've got CRS (Can't Remember Stuff) syndrome.)

In documents, text can be a heading 1, heading 2, et cetera.
heading1
heading2
heading3
...
For example:
t1a
abcd
...yyy
t2a
efgh
...xxx
ijkl
I want to change it to this:
t1a
efgh
...xxx
abcd
...yyy
t2a
ijkl
How could I do that?

When you copy this image

and paste it (via drag and drop from Google Chrome) to Libre Office Writer (4.3.3.2) you get:

Why is this so pixelated / fuzzy?
Somehow it does not copy the original image. How can I tell it to copy it in the original size by default?
But even after setting it to the original size, it is still pixelate. How can I fix that?

I have written my Thesis in LibreOffice. Everything is fine, but my University requires to provide the Thesis in a very specific format. In LibreOffice I cannot replicate the "From Top/From Bottom" space for header/footer. As a result the template is wrong and I need to fix it.
So, I saved the document as MS Word 2003 (from the LibreOffice) and opened the *.doc from my Office 2007 Word. In MS office I cannot change the page boundaries and to edit/change the Header/Footer. Specifically, the Edit Header/Edit Footer options are disabled on the Ribbon.
How can I solve that?

I'm probably one of the few who uses this, but I use it a lot. After my upgrade to LibreOffice 4.0, the Horizontal rule menu item is missing from the Writer Insert menu. Where did it go? How can I get it back?

Is it possible to apply strikethrough text formatting in LibreOffice Writer?

Is it possible to have multiple text alignments on one line in Libre Office? Something like:

left centre right

If this is possible, how can such behaviour be achieved?

In LibreOffice Writer, if I choose
Format -> Page... -> Background -> Background color
I can set a background color, but it is only used within the margins. How do I set the paper color?
One way is to set the margins to zero, but that is not optimal as I need the margins for the text.

I love LibreOffice / OpenOffice, but some tasks we cannot do in it, like mentioned in this question title: search and replace special characters in Writer. Someone does know how to do that?
You can do that tasks in MS Word (for instance, search for "^p", that is paragraph mark, and replace it with "^t", tabulation).
Also, you can do that also in Notepad++ (in showed example, using "\n" and "\t").
But in Writer, although there is a option "regular expressions", I cannot search for special characters with it - I always have to copy+paste text to MS Word/Notepad++, do what I want and copy+paste back to Writer...
Edit #1:
With tabulation mark it functions searching for \t.
What about with paragraph marks or line breaks? It does not. I've already tried \r, \n, \r\n, \n\r, ^p, ^l...
Edit #2: Almost solved by @Linker3000, but what about paragraph marks?

This seems to be a limitation to Writer, but I thought I'd ask anyway here, on the off chance someone has figured this out, and I'm missing something basic.
I'd like to add borders, such as stars or diamonds, to a Writer document but I only see very basic choices in the Format -> Page -> Border tab/pulldown. This would be the most logical place to do this operation but this dialog doesn't show any method for doing so.

I've also looked on LibreOffice's forums and issue tracker and there are a number of tickets asking for this feature but nothing jumped out at me as either a solution or a workaround.
Additionally I've looked for LibreOffice Extensions that might suit my needs here but again nothing.
The only method I've found is to take a background image that contains the borders and to use that as a background for the entire page. This seems like a hack to me.
Has anyone figured out a method to do this beyond the use of a background image?

I am preparing my thesis with several headings and subheadings. In fact I started writing the report first and later went on to add pages in the beginning to insert title page, certificate, abstract, acknowledgements and table of contents and so on. In the title page I have defined a set of custom fonts for the name of report and other details. I have set the custom fonts this way:
- Name: Doc_title; Next Style: Default; Linked with: Default; Outline level: Body Text; Numbering style: None
- Name: Tit_cont1; Next style: Tit_cont1; Linked with: Default; Outline level: Body Text; Numbering style: None
Rest of the contents in these first set of pages use text body
style.
Now my problem is when I generate the table of contents, all the contents of previous pages i.e, title page, certificate etc. appear in table of contents. I could of course delete them but I want to set this problem right. So I am asking here.

I am using Ubuntu 14, and am loading at Word .doc text file template provided by CreateSpacelink. The text in this template uses a font called Garamond. When I put a cursor over text in the template the name of the font appears, and when I type more text when this font is selected I am able to.
The problem is that I cannot write new text in this Garamond font, because it is not given as an option in the font drop down list. In a new document I cannot find this name, although I can find EB Garamond etc. I have installed from the Ubuntu software centre Microsoft fonts, and have installed at the command line various other fonts.
I would like to convert my text into Garamond before pasting the text into the template, but can only do so if there is an option to convert the font to the correct one before.

I'm trying to make a sidebar in a Libreoffice writer document, exactly like in the following template.
The sidebar should have a different background color and a separate text section, but vertically aligned with the content on the right (the sidebar will be used for headings, while the right section will be used for actual content).
A two column table seems appropriate for this, the left column holds the headings and the right one holds the content, but the sidebar's background color should fill the whole left part of the document (a vertical strip) without any margins, so I should set the margins to zero. The problem is, I need the margins for the text, and I somehow need the table's background color to ignore them.
I understand this may not be a good fit for Writer (and I can make the same document without any issues in HTML/CSS or a graphics editor like Photoshop), but I really need it in writer (the document is for someone else who won't accept an HTML or Photoshop version).

Often I find that I copy text from a gedit (linux) text editor document into a word processor like LibreOffice Writer. Of course I have hard linebreaks coded into the text.
How can I do a search and replace to reflow the text in LibreOffice Writer? In other words, I need the linebreaks removed.
Edit: Since it was suggested, I will add that I did tick regular expressions
and being an old programmer I did use \n
just in case it has any meaning for LibreOffice. The search key was not found when I opted for the find-and-replace.
