2 displays detected on ThinkPad T400

I want to ask if somebody know why there are 2 internal displays detected on my ThinkPad T400 on Win 8.1. I don't remember if it detect 2 displays also on other systems but I think yes.

It brings a problem of switching between displays when I have external monitor also connected and press Win+P and switch for example to Extend monitors.. It extend that "2 internal" displays and just ignore the external monitor.

And really I don't have mutant laptop with 2 displays.

Here are some screenshots:

When replacing a laptop screen, can only the right OEM screens be used?

Suppose we try to install a screen of the wrong brand (e.g. one that is smaller or equal to the correct size). Suppose further that we somehow beat the mechanical/physical connection aspect of it into submission.

What would it take to make it work on the electronic and software level?

For example, would I need to replace the driver (or some software equivalent for screens)? Is the VGA interface the same in both cases? What other issues could occur?

horizontal lines on laptop display

This laptop is not even 1 month old. Why am I seeing horizontal lines on the display? Is it normal? I'm using it for more than 6 hours a day. The gray horizontal line shows up immediately after booting up. So I think this is not software related. How do I solve this problem? If you need more details just feel free to ask, thanks.

How can we increase secondary screen resolution from 1280x 800 to 1920x1080 for an LCD TV?

My company had a 42" LCD TV with softward to connect a laptop for projection of images onto the TV. Our company laptops all have native screen resolution of 1280x800. We recently purchased a 55" LCD because the image on the 42" was not large enough in the conference room for all to see. Now all we get is the same size image on the bigger screen with a big black frame around it. We assume this is due to the TV's resolution being 1920x1080 and our laptops functioning at 1280x 800. Is there ANYTHING we can do (short of purchasing new laptops with higher native resolution) to make this work?

connect 2 external monitors keeping laptop display also open?

I actually have 2 questions:

Question 1:

At work I have 2 monitors and I have connected it to my laptop using: 1st monitor with HDMI port 2nd monitor with vga port

Now by doing this although I could use the 2 external monitors very well but the display at my laptop disappears. Is it possible to use my laptop display with this set up as well? I am using Thinkpad T520 laptop running Windows 7.

Question 2: At home I have an old dell inspiron laptop (running Vista) which doesnt have any hdmi port. But I want to connect 1 usual monitor and 1 usb (toshiba small 14") screen to it while keeping the laptop dsiplay working. I already have the laptop working with usual monitor using vga - but I want to buy a usb screen too and hook it up using usb port to my laptop but keeping laptop display alive, is it possible? If yes, how?

Thanks a lot :-)

Windows 8 screen goes black after a minute

My laptop screen goes black after about a minute of inactivity.

I've already tried setting the Screen Saver to anything other than Blank and increasing the Wait but it still keeps happening.

Also checked my Power Options, the plan I currently have is set to turn the screen off only after an hour.

If I move the mouse or press any key on the keyboard the screen wakes up.

Any other ideas why this is happening and how to fix it?

where is the backlight in laptop screen, physically?

if I were to take laptop screen apart, would the backlight be a long, thin gadget along one of the edges, like maybe the bottom edge of the screen? Or is "backlight" actually a matrix of light emitting elements throughout the screen surface?

A display driver has stopped working and has been recovered issue

I got this issue today where the computer first began to 'hang' and then the screen momentarily turned black and came back again with a pop up saying that the display driver stopped working and has been recovered.

The fix suggested was upgrading the drivers. So, opened the device manager and right click on appropriate device and click on update driver. Windows then says that the drivers are all updated.

Then, why is the issue persistent ?

I downloaded these drivers from HP's website. I remember I was told not to download drivers from the vendor's site as it may prevent HP from sending updates. I believe the drivers are outdated.

Do I download the drivers from the vendor's website ? if yes, which one ?

White-Black dot on Laptop Display

I have noticed a dot on my laptop screen. The behaviour of this dot is changing under different background colors. I just want to know if this is a DEAD PIXEL of anything else and is there any fix for this. Here is some explanation and images...

With RED and BLUE background the dot becomes barely white:

enter image description here

With YELLOW OR WHITE background its gone and with GREEN background the spot looks BLACK:

enter image description here

Here is the strange thing heppening i will try to explain,

The conditions i have explained above are only applicable if the whole display is of one color and there is no other program open with white background (eg. any browser or file explorer etc). However if I open some program somewhere on screen (not full-screen) then the spot becomes white,no matter the screen wallpaper is green or red.

How can I determine what is wrong with my laptop screen?

In order to obtain a normal level of brightness/contrast I have to slightly twist the screen, otherwise an array of GPU artifacts tend to appear on the screen, sometimes. I know, this sounds insane.

Symptoms:

  • GPU artifacts tend to appear if a black window (e.g. a terminal) is next to a white window, or in other high contrast situations; and
  • I need to apply force to the edges of my laptop screen to achieve proper contrast

  • No pressure applied to corners:

No pressure applied to corners

  • Applying pressure to corners:

Since I carry my laptop around with me in a laptop bag, there's a chance that the screen was pressed in, or damaged slightly, but I honestly have no idea how to diagnose this. Perhaps there is a chance that a ribbon cable is damaged?

There is a chance that the GPU artifacts have been introduced as a result of my inability to install a graphics driver, but I'm not sure. It looks like neither the proprietary or open source drivers work for my laptop any more, even though they worked before I re-installed Arch Linux a few weeks ago.

3 Monitors on Dell Latitude E6520 (NVidia NVS4200M) Display Keeps Disconnecting

I am trying to setup my Latitude E6520 with 3 monitors, 2 External and laptop display. THe setup should be as follows:

Primary - Laptop (1920x1080) - Embedded
Secondary - Acer X233H (1920x1080) - HDMI
Tertiary - Acer X183 (1366x768) - VGA

I currently have the externals connected, and I have the Laptop Display working with the X233H, running at the proper resolution...

The problem comes when I plug in the third monitor... I go into my display resolution properties and what happes is strange...

I can see all 3 displays, however, after a few seconds, it disappears off the list... and then several seconds later, it reappears..

I am able to use any 2 displays.. however with all 3 connected, it continually disconnects and reconnects..

My display card is an NVidia NVS4200M, and all drivers are up-to-date from NVidia.

I am running Windows8 (Up to date) and I have Optimus turned off (As Windows8 does not support my dual graphics cards).

Any and all help as to how I can get all 3 displays working correctly is greatly appreciated.

Response to Ariane

I am typing this here because my response would be too long for a comment, and it will add relevant information to my original post:

With all 3 plugged in, I can at any one point get 2 monitors to work, so I am expecting that what you said, in the fact that they share the same output if the problem..

I have tried replacing all of the cables, and still no difference. Does the same things.

I have tried plugging things in in all different orders, rebooting the computer and everything..

In regards to the dual video cards, they are not really 'cards' as one is the Intel Graphics build into the i Processors, and the other is a dedicated, but integrated, processor built into the laptop motherboard, it can not be removed.

In Windows 7, with the dual systems, I was given the option when right click on any .exe to launch it with either the NVidia graphics processor, or the Intel processor. As of right now I have the Intel Processor turned off, however all display ports on the system still work, it just must only support a maximum number of displays.

I will continue to look into this problem as I would love a solution ,but for now I am using an old USB->VGA adapter that I had laying around to power the Triary screen which I will not use for much more then my music application anyway... however it is sill a bit laggy for my taste, and I hope to find an actual solution ^.^

Do blue light filters actually reduce blue light?

I'm using redshift to reduce the blue light of my computer screen, which is supposed to be more relaxing for the eyes.

So I wander, if the screen is visibly more reddish, does that mean that there is actually less blue light or simply more red light than normal?

Or are both the same thing?
