What are some tweaks to Windows 7 that can be done for a HTPC?

I've built a HTPC and would like to optimize Windows 7 to dedicate as much of the resources to Media playback through the HTPC. I'll be using XBMC and Media Center (testing them out, and making a selection later). I'll also be playing full HD content. What are some tweaks to Windows 7 itself that will help me 'squeeze' the most performance for playback of the HD content?

The HTPC will be used for:

  • Video playback including Blu Ray Disk, Netflix/Hulu internet streaming, and Saved DVD's
  • Audio playback (NOT iTunes!) but the integrated XBMC or Windows Media Center
    • Audio files will be streamed from another, LAN connected PC
  • There is a high probability that Video will be ripped and encoded as well

Low quality playback in XBMC

I have VLC on my pc which I used to use for watching shows, but I've recently switched to using XBMC so I can stream things/control my pc from my phone, but I've noticed that XBMC has a much lower quality of video playback compared to VLC (MKV's and MP4's). Can anyone thing why this could be?

Windows Media Player/XBMC

WMP/XBMC

VLC

VLC

I'm not sure how well you can tell on the pictures but on WMP/XBMC, the edges are a lot blurrier and less near, and the colours look blockier.

Best Handbrake settings for encoding TV shows

Been using Handbrake since it's the fastest and easiest program for me to understand as I'm not a real A/V guy and I'm getting some under par results from it when it comes to TV shows.

I see episodes on torrent sites with sizes of ~175 for half hour shows and ~350 for hour shows and their in XviD but when I encode my DVD's with Handbrake with H.264 at the same size they seem to come out worse than the XviD rips on my HTPC.

I rip the DVD's with AnyDVD and then encode them using Handbrake with settings of H.264 .MKV with Loose Anamorphic and target size to which ever show I'm ripping and running the files on a external hard drive hooked up to a XBMC Live Acer Revo 1600.

These are my settings:

how do I install an add on from zip in xbmc 12?

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Add-ons#How_to_install_from_zip

The wiki is pretty straighforward but those options are not present when I follow the steps in the wiki. I select this:

System --> Settings --> AddOns

All I see is a list of add ons like Youtube and Railscasts. There's no option for installing from a zip file like the wiki says. Pressing ".." just takes me to the list of AddOn types like "Album Information" and "Artist Information" etc.

The wiki looks to be out of date.

media center software for dual-audio VCD recommendation

I already have a large collection of Karaoke VCD, they are basically mpeg movies with dual audio track. ie, the left audio channel has the music only, and right channel has music + vocal. In karaoke, one would normally select the left channel to be play thur both speaker.

I'm aware of Media center software like xbmc or mediaportal, but never played with them. I tried searching for their website, but can't for sure whether it can select a single audio around like this or not. I found a post that xbmc didn't support this, but it was back in 2004.

Does anyone have any recommendation / experience on an easy to use software for this? open to either Win or Linux options.

UPDATED: Looks like XBMC won't work since it's no longer using mplayer: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=74451 Are there any alternatives that are easy to operate? Imagine your grandpa & grandma using it... so not very computer savy.

Access media collection with metadata over DLNA

I've got a big media collection on my main PC, and would like to be able to watch it on different devices (TV, laptop), without having to manually copy files around. A good way to do this seems to be via DLNA. I managed to get a DLNA server running (TVMOBiLi and XBMC both work), and can view my files from other DLNA players (is that the right term?), specifically XBMC. However, it's still quite complicated to add the server, browse to the subdirectory (usually something complicated like My Content/Videos/TV Shows/S - U/blah/Season 03). If it's like that, I could just 'share' the folder with the OS's file sharing function instead.

What I'd like to have is to have the videos (and music) integrated into the client's library, so that they show up with all the metadata they have on the server (season, episode, artwork, etc.), and not just as filenames. Is there a way to make this possible with XBMC or another program? Do you have software recommendations?

XMBC Flicks missing from plugin list

I have just installed XBMC on a Windows XP machine, and would like to use it to play Netflix. The XBMC Flicks plugin is not in the list of video plugins.

The version of XBMC is 11 (Eden). The machine has Silverlight and Internet Explorer (I have used this machine to play Netflix via IE).

Any ideas why the plugin would not be listed, or if there is another way to play Netflix via XBMC?

(Mythbuntu) After upgrading to XBMC 11, Mythbox now says "cannot import name decodeLongLong"?

The vital stats:
Mythbuntu 10.10 (maverick)
XBMC 11 -- from team-xbmc maverick ppa
Mythtv 0.23.1+fix (the standard version for mythbuntu 10.10)
Mythbox version 1.1.0

OK, so, I was happily going along running XBMC 10.1 on my HTPC setup, and I saw everyone was all excited about XBMC 11, and it was available from the PPA.

Now, when I go into mythbox and select a recording, it shows me the following error message box:

Error: oninit

cannot import name decodeLongLong

This only seems to affect its ability to show a thumbnail picture for the recording. When I start playing the recording, everything pretty much goes fine.

What does this error message mean? Is there any way I can fix it? Is there a library I am missing or something?

Edit: I've posted a few more details in the comments here.

VLC stream with input options

I'm trying to stream in CVLC for XBMC. My problem is that I can't, because I'm not just using a file stream, but rather a Decklink protocol, and I need input options. I can't find any resources on how to do that.

I tried to make VLM file:

new channel1 broadcast enabled
setup channel1 input decklink://{--decklink-video-connection="hdmi" --decklink-mode="Hi60" --rtsp-timeout 0}
setup channel1 output #rtp{mux=ts,dst=localhost,port=1234,sdp=sap://,name="Channel 1"}

control channel1 play

But that is not working even without double brackets.

Command:

cvlc -vvv decklink:// --decklink-video-connection="hdmi" --decklink-mode="Hi60" --rtsp-timeout 0

is working fine. But i can't stream it even from the CMD line:

cvlc -vvv decklink:// --decklink-video-connection="hdmi" --decklink-mode="Hi60" --rtsp-timeout 0 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=300,fps=25,scale=1,acodec=mp4a,ab=64,channels=2}:std{access=rtmp,mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=rtmp://127.0.0.0:1935}'

I tried many combination. The input for the stream is an ordinary HDMI input.

Any suggestions on how to stream this?

What happened to XBMC for Linux?

I'm setting up an HTPC so I'm trying to install XBMC. Following the XBMC Team's instructions, the commands run as expected until the second line, where apt-get reports that the package 'xbmc' wasn't found. I did an apt-cache search and the only result xbmc-related was

xbmc-ppa-keyring - GnuPG archive keys for the XBMC PPA

When I looked into the Launchpad PPA site, that was, indeed, the only package there. I'm using Ubuntu Lucid. What's going on?

NAS + XBMC combination

I currently own a WD Sharespace and I am not too happy about it. It will freeze constantly and its rather slow. I've been thinking of replacing it. I also own a WD HD Live, and it works like it is supposed to, but recently I've seen XBMC in action and I was quite impressed.

I've been wondering lately about the possibility of replacing both products with one new device: a fast reliable nas which I can install XBMC on and is capable of rendering video and has an HDMI out.

Do any such devices exist for sale or is the only way to build one from scratch?

I've seen HTPC's for sale but I've never seen any of them with a raid setup. I've also read about building your own NAS with freeNAS but those setups dont allow you to run XBMC. Does anyone have experience with this?

How to upgrade XBMC Live via command line?

I've been unable to do a fresh install of XBMC Live 9.11 to my hard drive. Everytime it fails at the Install System step. But I am able to get XBMC Live 9.04.1 to install successfully.

How do I upgrade XBMC Live 9.04.1 to 9.11?

I understand that Ctrl+Alt+F2 brings up the command line, but what are the next set of commands to run?

How do I use a TV Tuner in XBMC?

Is there any way to use a TV tuner card in the XBMC interface?

I don't care about things like recording, all I need to do is change between channels, and maybe use an EPG (Electronic Program Guide). Timeshifting would be a plus.

Since XBMC is based around mplayer, and mplayer supports TV tuners, it seems odd it's not supported by now. Obviously when it was Xbox-only, there was no point considering supporting TV tuners, but it's been on regular computers for years.

I'm aware of alternatives (MythTV and the likes), but I'm only curious about addons/forks of XBMC supporting TV tuners.
