How to make KDE Desktop stop creating notification 'The screen is being locked'

Is there a setting somewhere that tells KDE Power Management System to stop creating notifications whenever I put the computer to sleep? It is annoying, having my notification list full of 'The screen is being locked' messages.

Google chrome did not shutdown correctly

I get the "Google chrome did not shutdown correctly" message every time I reboot my computer. I'm using:

  • Google chromium 8.0.552
  • KDE 4.5.4

I believe this has something to do with chrome not obeying the shutdown signal which KDE sends to all applications on quit. So then KDE kills chromium and then the message has to appear. Does anyone know how to stop this?

What is the "right" way to add a file to a panel in KDE

Adding a widget or program to a panel in KDE is easy: apps can be added from kickstart, and widgets via the normal panel settings.

But if I have a file, such as a libreoffice document, the process I use is convoluted:

  1. I drag the document to the desktop to create a shortcut
  2. Drag from the desktop to a panel to get it into the panel
  3. Delete the desktop shortcut
  4. Inevitably have to modify the icon in the panel from the generic one to one that matches the document

I am thinking there is a better way to do this, I just don't see it.

Cycle through windows in KDE 4 taskbar by shortcut?

Is there a way to cycle through the windows in the KDE 4 taskbar with a shortcut?

I want to have a switch to next window function on a mouse button. Therefore Alt+Tab is not suitable because it uses a stack for the windows. This means if hitting Alt+Tab, releasing the Alt key and pressing Alt+Tab again will bring up the window I had before pressing the keys the first time.

Maybe there is a solution using DBus. But I don't know how to use this.

How to make persistent shortcuts to windows in KDE4?

This answer Find and raise a window in KDE4 with shortcut tells how to set a keyboard shortcut which activates a particular windows. It works wonderfully. But if I close the application and restart it, the shortcut resets. Is there a way to make it persistent?

Unicode characters display improperly in KDE and on the console in Arch Linux

I recently switched from OpenSuSE to Arch Linux. Files with unicode characters in the name used to display fine, but after the switchover I just get mojibake. For example, in my music library Queensrÿche appears as Queensrÿche.

This occurs on the console as well.

I piled on to a relevant thread in the Arch Linux forums, but haven't gotten an answer.

Find and raise a window in KDE4 with shortcut

I was wondering about a possibility to find and raise some window in KDE4 with shortcut. Currently in KDE 4.4 there is a possibility to switch to window from krunner (Alt-F2). Say, I have an open konsole widow somewhere and to switch to it, I can Alt-F2, write konsole and choose konsole window I need from the list. This is great, but too much typing. I would like to have a keyboard shortcut to do the same.

Maybe some DBUS magic can do that? Any ideas?

Thaks! Andre

Multiple global shortcuts for the same action

In KDE4, I want to be able to change my sound volume both with the built-in Volume Up key as well as Meta+U.

While I can define alternate keybindings for all program-wide actions, there is no such column in the Global System Shortcuts settings. How can I define multiple global keyboard shortcuts for the same action?

Set device for program in PulseAudio?

In computer I have 2 sound devices.

When I run some program (let's say Skype) I can (using "pavucontrol" -> "PulseAudio Volume Control") setup so that this application will use given device for playback or recording.

But - in the Playback/Recording tabs application is visible only if it is currently doing something (playback or recording).

How can I set device per application, but before the application starts recording or playing sounds?

Thunderbird, chat extension, what about notification

As you may have noticed, Thunderbird's new version has now a built-in feature that allows you to use it as a chat client. For example, Google talk. So I initiated my own account. The problem is that there are no notifications, for example in the tray. Any ideas?

Is it possible to configure Kde 4 to resize windows to half desktop size when moved to the side of the screen?

In Windows 7 You can drag a window to the edge of the screen (the mouse pointer must touch the edge), windows offers you to resize the window to exactly half of the screen size. This is actually very handy on the wide screen monitors.

Is it possible (and how) to configure Kde 4 to do the same thing?
