Double-speed playback for iTunes?

The iPod app on the iPhone (and presumably the iPod Touch) supports playback at 2x the recorded speed. This is great for listening to talk-radio podcasts when I'm driving, as I can get about twice the information in the same amount of time.

Does iTunes itself support this kind of playback? I can't seem to find the option. I'd rather play in iTunes rather than on my iPhone when I'm at my desk.

How can I make Windows not mount a drive when it is plugged in?

Due to my employer's IT policy, I'm not allowed to have any kind of MP3 playing software on my computer. I do, however, like to plug my iPod into my computer to keep the battery charged during working hours. Normally, I plug the iPod in, Windows mounts the drive, then I have to go in and eject the drive so I can run my iPod normally while still keeping it charged.

Is there any way I can keep Windows from mounting the drive (and this drive only, I still use my USB flash drive a lot) from auto-mounting?

Update: Maybe this is more of an iPod issue, but specifically I would like for the iPod to not display the "Do not disconnect" message when plugged in.

iPod management software for Linux

I have iPod nano 4th generation. I'm using Ubuntu Linux. There is no iTunes release for Linux. But I want to use as many iPod features as I can.

  • Importing music is simple, I can use almost any media player: Rythmbox, Amarok, Exaile, etc.
  • For importing calendars I've wrote custom bash script, which downloads ical files from Google Calendar and copies to iPod on mounting. This works fine.
  • Notes - almost the same: script for copy & paste.

But how I can sync podcasts and add audio books? If I transfer some podcasts or audio books as simple audio files, these files appears next to all music. It doesn't looks comfortable when shuffling around songs starts playing chapter from any audio book... iTunes also lets set custom parameters for audio files ex. play continuously (comfortable for audio books). How I can get these features on Linux? What software do you use with your iPod on Linux?

Driver not recognized with Windows Guest VirtualBox and Ipod Nano

I'm having a driver problem with my ipod nano. I'm trying to connect my nano to my windows guest vbox with a linux host. Although the system is recognizing the nano, it says that there is a driver problem. I tried allowing the system to troubleshoot the driver and it didn't work. How do I get the Windows VBox guest to recognize the iPod?

Here's what the log said when I tried to troubleshoot it:

Podcast playback faster than 1x speed on iPod

I listen to several MP3-based podcasts on my 3rd Generation iPod Nano and many of them are in a pure talk radio format (mostly talking, generally no/little music). I've been trying to find a way to speed up the playback of the podcasts. I know for audiobooks you can choose to have them played back faster, but I don't want to have to deal with converting every downloaded podcast over to an audiobook before syncing it to the iPod. I've also seen this question about speeding it up in iTunes, but I'm looking for speeding it up no matter where I'm listening to it.

I have tried to use http://podshifter.com/ before, but there seems to be a stability/reliability issue with the site from my experience. The issues with it have ranged from not accepting the RSS feed itself, to being unavailable when iTunes is checking the feeds. So preferably I'd like a client-side solution.

NOTE: I am using Windows to run iTunes and sync with the iPod.

Get songs off of Windows iPod and onto a Mac

I have been using iTunes on a Dell running Windows XP to sync about 60 gigs of songs with my old school iPod. Well, the Dell's hard drive died the other day, and the only place that I have my music is on the iPod (I do have the CDs, but really don't want to have to re-rip 60 gigs of music).

So, now I have a shiny new MacBook Pro. Is there a way to get my songs off of my iPod and onto the MacBook? I googled, and found Senuti. But, I'm leery of accidentally formating the iPod and losing my songs, and I can't tell if it is Snow Leopard compatible yet.

Has anyone recently gone through this process? Please provide suggestions for copying songs from an iPod formated to work with Windows onto a MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard.

Thanks!

How to delete a podcast from an iPod and not have it reappear after syncing with iTunes?

Say I have subscribe to a single podcast and I have Episode 1 and Episode 2 on my iPod. Each episode is 30 minutes long. I listen to the entirety of Episode 1 and just the first 15 minutes of Episode 2. I delete Episode 1 using my iPod's menu.

Say Episode 3 has just come out. I want to be able to sync with iTunes, and after doing so, have just Episodes 2 and 3 on my iPod (with Episode 2 "half listened to"). How can I do this?

Ideal state...

  • Episode 1 = deleted
  • Episode 2 = 15 minutes played already
  • Episode 3 = unplayed

I've found that if I set the Sync Podcast option in iTunes to "all new", I get:

"All new"

  • Episode 1 = not on the iPod
  • Episode 2 = not on the iPod
  • Episode 3 = unplayed

and if I set the Sync Podcast option in iTunes to "all unplayed"

"All unplayed"

  • Episode 1 = unplayed
  • Episode 2 = 15 minutes played already
  • Episode 3 = unplayedv

neither option does what I want. Is there an option to get my "ideal state"?

Partitioning Ipod Classic 160gb

I want to make some partitions on my ipod, but i have been unable to. This is what i tried:

  • Using windows 7 disk managment didnt allow
  • Diskpart command line said :"File system doesnt support shrinking"
  • Tried several partitioning programs but the ipod didnt show up on the harddrive list.

Suggestions?

I saw that there were actually 2 partitions on the ipod, one for the firmware and another for the music. But I only see 1 on windows.

Of course i want to still use the ipod as a music player... so i dont want to reformat the whole drive to NTFS and then repartition... or is there a way to backup the data and then restore it to a fat32 partition like nothing happened?

In Snow Leopard, how do I make hidden directories visible?

I’ve got some folders that I copied from a friend’s old iPod. (They’re the F00, F01 folders that the old iPod used to store music files).

On my Mac (running Snow Leopard), they’re hidden in the Finder, and invisible to Python’s glob module.

I’d like to stop them being hidden, permanently. I know I can make the Finder show hidden files (see http://superuser.com/questions/53383/), but I’d like to make the directories themselves be not hidden.

Convert videos to iPod Touch-friendly formats [closed]

I have a bunch of Xvid videos lying around, and I would love to convert them to a format that will play on my iPod touch efficiently and quickly.

What free programs can do this? Although I am after something to run on Leopard, Windows programs wouldn't be bad either.

Can't manage iPod from linux anymore

I used to be able to see and manage my iPod with different softwares: Amarok, Rhythmbox, GTKPod. The device is a nano 1st generation 4gb.

Currently it mounts regularly and can be accessed from the file system, but I get this in dmesg:

The only application that can access it (partially) is Rhythmbox. I say partially because I can transfer files to the iPod but can't remove or modify them. Also one transfer didn't finish and only 9 out of 16 songs were delivered to the device. All other softwares I tried (GTKPod, Amarok, Songbird) don't even detect it.

What can I do to troubleshoot this?

EDIT2:

The "before" state is hard to tell, it was a lot of updates ago. Haven't been using my iPod for a while so I can't say when exactly it stopped working. I'm sure Amarok was still at version 1.X but can't remember when it was. My current system is debian testing fully updated.

NOTE: just noticed that if I mount the device manually instead of letting nautilus automount it, I can see it again on GTKPod but still not on Banshee AND it's vanished from Rhythmbox...

Unable to sync iPod Touch with my PC

I'm trying to sync a first gen iPod Touch to my PC running Windows 7 64 bit. The problem is that whenever I connect the iPod, iTunes completely freezes (if I start iTunes after connecting the iPod it will simply hang until it's physically disconnected from the PC).

I reinstalled iTunes thinking that it had been corrupted, but without any luck. I've had this problem with all the latest versions of iTunes. I've also tried using MediaMonkey and DoubleTwist. None of these apps see the iPod as being connected; DoubleTwist also freezes, just like iTunes.

The really strange thing is that I was able to sync the iPod with this PC a while back, but I now seem to have lost that ability. I don't know what changed. Windows detects the device every time it's plugged in (I can see it in Device Manager and I can browse all photos on iPod as if it were a camera). Also, I can sync it to iTunes on Mac OS X without any major problems.

Edit: after getting similar behavior in Windows XP (I got an 0xE8000065 error message), it seemed less and less like a driver issue. So I did the following:

  • a second restore from a Mac (without restoring the backup that was made in the process!),
  • changed the USB port (again), <-- this is mostly out of paranoia, but it doesn't hurt to try it (it might be a problem, you can never know)
  • reinstalled iTunes (again), making sure that the drivers were correctly installed. Look in Device Manager; there's an entry in USB devices called Apple Mobile Device USB Driver (the physical file is called either USBAAPL.sys or USBAAPL64.sys, depending on your OS). This entry might not appear if the iPod/iPhone is unplugged.
  • ???
  • Profit! It worked!

I have no idea why it worked this second time (I had done all these steps before, but without any luck; it probably has to do with the fact that I did the restore, but I also had iTunes copy the backup onto the iPod after finishing), but it did. iTunes recognized the iPod as an iPhone (?!), but it correctly configured it as an iPod Touch. Now everything seems to be working.

I've marked Matrix Mole's answer as accepted since the restore probably solved my problem.
