24" iMac Kernal Panics when booting anything OS X related

I have an Imac which suddenly started giving me Kernal Panics every time it boots. I suspected a hardware issue so ran a hardware test and that found no issues. I tried booting off another hard drive, several OS X installer discs from Tiger all the way to Snow Leopard and its the exact same problem. But it boots fine in Windows, all drivers installed and everything. No issues at all!

I cant work out why it always fails with OS X. If anyone can point to any ideas at all I'd really appreciate it as this is mind boggling. Thanks.

How many external displays can I connect to the new iMac (May 2011)

The new iMac has just been released with two thunderbolt ports.

For those that don't know, thunderbolt comprises of PCI Express and Display Port technology, is also known as 'LightPeak' and is developed by both Apple and Intel.

Thunderbolt ports support display port technology, so they can support any display port display (such as the Apple 27" LED Display").

Since the new iMac has two thunderbolt ports, does this mean that I could connect two external 27" monitors?

Are there any limiting factors besides the amount of available ports?

How to find out what is preventing my iMac to go to sleep?

I have an iMac running Snow Leopard. Everything is running fine, but the mac won’t go to sleep if inactive. The settings are correct. Any ideas what might cause this? I guess some background program is preventing the mac from automatically going to sleep, but I have no idea which it is. How can I find out? Is there some logging for sleep I can turn on?

Numpad's Enter key is acting like the Command key instead

I can't get the numpad Enter key to work on OS X 10.6.5. The numpad works fine, as do the plus and minus keys. Only the Enter is not working.

I tried 2 keyboards and I get the same problem with both, so it's got to be a setting somewhere. In Keyboard Viewer, when I press the key, it shows that the ⌘ keys are pressed. And indeed, pressing Enter-L puts the cursor in the location bar of my browser, just like Command-L would. Is there a way to remap it?

Convert iMac internal LCD panel to external monitor?

My iMac died (power supply issue, out of warranty), so I took it apart to get at the HDD to recover some files. In the process, I managed to remove the LCD panel.

My question is: is it possible/does there exist an adapter that I can use to convert this panel (with an internal connector) into an external monitor that accepts a DVI input?

Would the 2011 27" iMac be more power efficient than my 3 year old HP PC? [closed]

Our power bill keeps climbing higher and higher and we are looking for ways to start saving power (even if it involves quite an initial investment).

One of the things we are looking at replacing is our aging HP desktop. I am pretty sure it's the HP Media Center m7160n. Would I see a 'noticeable' saving in power if I upgraded to an iMac? What about just a new 'regular' Dell PC?

PC connects to wifi on Channel 11 but iMac/iPhone can't. All work fine on Channel 5. Why? I'm not in a busy area

As follows

  • Windows PC connects to wifi (Netgear DGN2000) on router's default Channel 11 fine.
  • iMac makes a connection over wifi on Channel 11 and gets IP address, subnet, router address but can't ping router or open admin page on it.
  • iPhone 4S completely fails to connect to same router on Channel 11. Just hangs.
  • iMac works fine when plugged in to Ethernet socket on router but we don't want wires trailing across the house.
  • iMac and iPhone both connect to a different router (DG834) on Channel 11 fine. Sadly in a different town.
  • when I switch the DGN2000 over to Channel 5 ... PC, iMac and iPhone all connect fine and can see the outside world as normal. (I chose Channel 5 at random. Using InSSIDer I see that most channels are empty.)
  • I am not in a busy area - there is just one other wifi available here (it's a quiet street) and I can connect to that fine from any machine.

Any ideas why? Is one other wifi network enough to clash on a wifi channel?

Also, is there any rule to guide choice of alternative channel?

I've searched for similar questions and believe I'm not asking a dupe.

Cloning Dual Boot iMac to a new iMac

I have an iMac that dual boots to Windows 7 using Bootcamp. I just purchased a new iMac and I'd like to fully clone my old iMac to the new iMac. I've done this before using a firewire cord and starting as a target drive.

Would this same method work to transfer both operating systems in one go?

How do I enlarge a game but not make it full screen? [duplicate]

Possible Duplicate:
How to stretch or scale a windows to fit resolution height and width sizes?

I'm playing a game in windowed mode, unfortunately my screen is huge 2560x1440 or something and the game window is tiny. If I use fullscreen it blows up and looks atrocious. I just want to enlarge the window by 2x or 3x.

I'm using the windows magnifier option but moving my mouse around makes the screen zoom around unusably. Is there a way to just magnify one program/window and fix it?

iMac - connecting an external monitor to my thunderbold ouput

I have a LG HDTV that has many inputs HDMI and one VGA. The HDMI input expects the audio to come with the video and the VGA input has a separate audio mini-jack input and when selected expects the audio to come from this minijack input.

I have an old iMac with a miniDVI port. As this miniDVI port do not carries audio and my intention was to connect it to the TV, I was forced to use a miniDVI to VGA adapter to connect the Mac to the TV's VGA input and a second cable with mini-jacks to carry the audio between the Mac and the TV. It works nicely and I have full HDTV resolution on the TV, coming from the miniDVI.

Now I am about to buy one of these new iMac 27" with a thunderbolt port. My idea is to continue using this TV as a second monitor of this new iMac.

But as I don't know the characteristics of this thunderbolt port, I ask you guys:

1) as far as I read, this Mac thunderbolt output has the same connector as the miniDisplay port plug and works with that cable. If this is true, my best option to connect this new mac to this TV is to use a miniDisplay to HDMI adapter, right? Which one have you test and you can recommend? Apple's?

2) will I have audio?

thanks

Nothing "saves" on mac

Mid 2009 iMac Lion 10.7.2

I've had the most obscure problem lately. I recently screwed over my mac by installing ubuntu, but forgetting to move GRUB. So I had to reinstall firmware and such. It's been working fine EXCEPT for one thing.

Saving. It saves things like documents and such quite easily, but things like the dock, preferences, stuff like that doesn't save. It just so happens my wallpaper is stuck with the trollface saying "problem?" It changes, but when I log back out and in, it is reset.

Also, it won't save documents/files without prompting for an admin pw if it's not within the first 2 levels of my home directory.

I've tried getting the info of my home folder, unlocking it, and saving the permissions for RW for me with all enclosed items. I've also tried repairing perms.

EDIT: it says I don't have permission when I try to copy over a file.

How many external monitors can be used with the 2012 iMac with a 2GB video card?

Apple allows for the latest iMac (released late 2012) to be upgraded to an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5 video card. Does this upgrade enable more than the standard two external monitors that have been allowed in previous Thunderbolt releases?

Non-iMac NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 desktop cards have One Dual Link DVI-I, One Dual Link DVI-D, One HDMI, One DisplayPortStandard Display Connectors and can support up to 4 monitors. However, Apple exposes two thunderbolt connections - and all previous thunderbolt releases have been capped at 2 external monitors.

Does the latest iMac go beyond the two external monitor limit? What is the hardware configuration that allows this (e.g. 4 thunderbolt monitors - one per thunderbolt connection - with each supporting one daisy chained additional monitor?

I'm really interested in full-resolution options - preferably additional 27in monitors with at least 2560x1440 (not USB driven / magic adaptor driven alternatives).

Bonus if you have pictures of you running MORE than two thunderbolt / display port monitors from the late 2012 iMac.

Thanks for your information. :-)

How do I set up the network drivers for Windows 7 on my iMac?

I installed Windows 7 32 bit on my 27" iMac OS X 10.6.6. When Windows loaded, I couldn't connect to the internet via wireless or ethernet. It appears the drivers are not correct?

I did the same installation a while ago on a 24" iMac (can't remember the OS X version) and when Windows loaded, the wireless worked.

What did I do wrong?
