ibm interview questions
Top ibm frequently asked interview questions
I'm trying to get a rather JDK-sensitive piece of Oracle software working with Websphere, and I need to find some particular versions of the IBM JDK to try. The problem is that IBM doesn't really make these readily available like Sun/Oracle does with theirs, and all the versions I've been able to get my hands on haven't worked for one reason or another.
Specifically, I need one of:
IBM Java 5 SR9 for Windows (ideal)
IBM Java 5 SR2 for Windows
IBM Java 5 SR10 for Windows
How could I get these directly from IBM? My company has a support contract for Websphere, and I hopefully could have one of our Websphere engineers download it if I can tell them where to go.
If there's no direct download, what are some good free products with IBM JDKs that I could scavenge an old version like this from?

Is there an announced end of life/end of support-date for the ibm jdk 5
(on Solaris/SPARC and Linux/x64)?

I know it has been a while since IBM replaced SanFrancisco, but I am looking for experiences or comments from the people who are still using it (or did use it, or even decided to use any of its patterns in their work).
Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks.

We use IBM WebSphere Portal in combination with JSF
. A dreadful mix, which keeps proving its dreadfulness time after time.
Recently we're having the issue where we have a portlet with a link to a download servlet (contained in the same war). This servlet tries to read certain attributes from the HttpSession which are supposed to be set by the portlet on the PortletSession in APPLICATION_SCOPE
.
Sometimes, however, the servlet couldn't read any of the needed attributes from the HttpSession
. This was cause for an investigation by me. After some searching I discovered that it only happened when the portlet was loaded for the first time (without any page reloads).
After some experimenting I got a NullPointerException
when calling getAttributeNames(scope)
on the PortletSession
. The PortletSession
was obtained from the external context through the faces context. I discovered the PortletSession
was in fact a com.ibm.faces.portlet.httpbridge.PortletSessionWrapper
which apparently is supposed to contain the actual PortletSession
. This contained session was clearly null. Most methods of the PortletSessionWrapper
guard against an NPE with a null check, however, the getAttributeNames(scope)
didn't (a bug if you ask me).
Now is the big question: why is the (real) PortletSession
null on the first load of the portlet ?

It seems Rational software architect (RSA) & Rational application developer (RAD) both IBM products are basically used as an IDE. But both have specific purpose to use. Please help me to understand when to use RSA and when RAD. What are the differences and what are the similarities between these two IBM products.

I am aware that it was implemented on the IBM 360 mainframe architecture but does anyone know what language(s) were used in particular? Supposedly the bulk of it was programmed and deployed in 3-4 months - that is a pretty rapid turn-around for any project let alone one which had the capability to monitor an entire economy. I am partially thinking it may have been implemented in APL because of the IBM 360 connection and because it seems like it would lend itself well to the sort of abstractions required to rapidly develop such a system. Does anyone know anything more factual?

I would like to use a JSP tag library supplied by a different (not IBM) software company with XPages. Is this possible? If you can, how can I associate the new jar file to the tag library namespace so it would be recognized?

I want to make a custom paging according to the following link :
but my stored procedure is in informix :
so i search for the equivalent row_number()
i find this solution
but when i use it in my procedure i get the following error
SQL error -944 Cann't use "first","limit","skip" in this context !
How to rewrite the stored procedure in the previous link with informix rules ?
my procedure has multiple unions is like this :
create procedure get_inbox_page(p_emp_num smallint, p_task_code smallint, p_main_code smallint default 0, p_year smallint default 0,p_page int)
returning varchar(60) as v_page_view, varchar(60) as v_task_name, smallint as v_task_code, varchar(60) as v_sp_name, varchar(60) as v_db_name, varchar(60) as v_column_key, smallint as v_trans_serial,
DATETIME YEAR TO FRACTION(3) as v_trans_date, varchar(60) as v_trans_desc , varchar(60) as v_emp_name, varchar(60) as v_values_key, smallint as v_old_state_serial,

Here's a minimum code example that illustrates the problem:
#include <iostream>
class Thing
{
// Non-copyable
Thing(const Thing&);
Thing& operator=(const Thing&);
int n_;
public:
Thing(int n) : n_(n) {}
int getValue() const { return n_;}
};
void show(const Thing& t)
{
std::cout << t.getValue() << std::endl;
}
int main()
{
show(3);
}
This yields the same error:
int main()
{
show( Thing(3) );
}
IBM XL C/C++ 8.0 compiler under AIX emits these warnings:
"testWarning.cpp", line 24.9: 1540-0306 (W) The "private" copy constructor "Thing(const Thing &)" cannot be accessed.
"testWarning.cpp", line 24.9: 1540-0308 (I) The semantics specify that a temporary object must be constructed.
"testWarning.cpp", line 24.9: 1540-0309 (I) The temporary is not constructed, but the copy constructor must be accessible.
I also tried g++ 4.1.2 with "-Wall" and "-pedantic" and got no diagnostic. Why is access to the copy constructor required here? How can I eliminate the warning, besides making the object copyable (which is outside my control) or making an explicit copy to pass (when the real-life object is expensive to copy)?

Does anyone have any performance tips or other help for local development with websphere and rad. I am using one web app of moderate size (1000? classes) and it is impossible to handle the app locally on a windows box. The websphere 6.1 configuration uses the default configs. RAD7 is configured to handle a max heap of 1024mb. I thought about increasing the heap of the server. at present the min and max are 128/300mb.
In terms of the unresponsive. Sometimes it may take minutes to load a page, if the page loads at all. Also, I disabled "Build Automatically" and Publish Automatically. Maybe those should be turned on?

I'm working on a ASP.NET website that calls a DB2 database. I have Visual Studio installed on a Windows 2008 server where the site will be hosted. When I debug the site in Visual Studio, using the integrated web server, I can connect to the database and the site runs fine. When I set the site up in IIS7, on the same server, I cannot access the site or the database because of the following error.
Here are the technical details:
Windows 2008 Server
IIS 7
Visual Studio 2010 Premium
DB2 v9.5.301.436

I don't understand how the site can run fine using the Visual Studio web server and not work in IIS. I don't know if it's an IIS issue or and issue with the version of IMB.Data.DB2.dll I'm using. If anyone has a solution or any ideas, they would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

I've recently purchased an IBM Thinkpad that came with a fingerprint scanner. That got me thinking: are fingerprint scanners a good way to protect your code i.e. if someone takes your laptop or goes on your laptop while you're away, would they still be able to get in?
The question also applies for other biometrics techniques that the new Thinkpads have (iris scans, I believe).
Are there other ways of physically protecting your code?

IBM suggests that the best practice for using EntityManagers is get/use/close. If EntityManager is not closed, there's a chance that the same EntityManager may be used by more than one thread which will result in the following error:
<openjpa-2.1.2-SNAPSHOT-r422266:1179900 fatal general error> org.apache.openjpa.persistence.PersistenceException: Multiple concurrent threads attempted to access a single broker. By default brokers are not thread safe; if you require and/or intend a broker to be accessed by more than one thread, set the openjpa.Multithreaded property to true to override the default behavior.
If you load an object which has OneToMany collection mapped as fetch=LAZY like this:
public T find(Object id) {
T t = null;
EntityManager em = getEm();
t = em.find(type, id);
em.close();
return t;
}
EntityManager getEm() {
if(this.em ==null || !this.em.isOpen()) {
this.em = emf.createEntityManager();
}
return this.em;
}
The collection will always be null as by the time someone calls the getter, EntityManager is closed. The collection is only loaded if fetch is EAGER but that results in a SQL join every single time which is slow.
So it's either "Multiple threads" error, or openjpa.Multithreaded=true which is a bad practice or it's slow because of the SQL join every single time even if the collection is not needed. Is there any way to do it properly so it's both fast with Lazy fetch and done using best practices only?
