How can I set up two-factor authentication (use both fingerprint and password) on my HP Pavilion laptop?

I have an HP Pavilion dv6z-3000 laptop with a Validity VFS301 fingerprint reader. I'd like to set it up so that it prompts for both my fingerprint and password, but I can't find any such option for two-factor authentication in the (DigitalPersona-based) HP SimplePass software. How do I do this? Methods which use Windows itself or the HP SimplePass software are preferred.

The operating system is Windows 7 Home Premium x64.

Durable power adapter for HP laptop?

I'm on my third power adapter for my HP Pavilion dv4-1435dx in less than one year. I'm not abusing them. I used Mac laptops for 10 years (before needing to switch to a PC) without a problem.

I tried a Targus universal power adapter, but it wouldn't charge my PC, it worked fine on another laptop http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.aspx?sku=APA6911US

Any suggestion for a more durable and reliable power adapter?

What parts are worth salvaging from a HP dv6402ca laptop?

My HP Pavilion dv6402ca is dead (probably the motherboard), and I was wondering if there are any parts in it worth salvaging aside from the RAM and HDD.

Is there a difference in laptop RAM?

I have a HP Pavilion DV9750 laptop and I want to to replace my current memory from 2X1GiB to 2X2GiB.

Now I've seen a couple of websites, but most have a really model-specific memory?

What kind of RAM do I need?

Mixed messages about upgrading RAM beyond manufacturer-supported memory

I really just want to confirm a few things. I have an HP laptop, and I have got mixed information.

First off, this is the laptop I own:

HP Pavilion dv6-6153ea

I ran the Crucial system scanner and it told me the maximum RAM I can have is 8GB. However I joined the HP Support forums, and they showed me some documentation that says this laptop with the Intel CPU can handle 16GB.

Here is the documentation that says 16GB for Intel chips, page 5 of the PDF file. Page numbers are in the bottom right on each page. It's actually page 13 as you scroll in GChrome.

The HP support forums are going by this documentation. However I found this support page that clearly says upgradable to 8GB (along with the Crucial scanner).

Crucial do have a disclaimer saying the 8GB in 2 slots is to "not exceed the manufacturer supported memory".

So can I go ahead with 16GB? Is there anything I can change software-wise so that it will read all 16GB if I were to buy it and install it? It obviously scanned my laptop and found 8GB somewhere, maybe a limitation put in by HP somewhere in the BIOS? Anything I can check?

The mixed messages are really confusing, which is why I'm asking in multiple places. I don't want to mess this up.

Thanks for advice you can offer, really appreciate it!

How to type French accents on an English keyboard by using "ALT"

My current laptop is an HP pavilion g6, windows 7 64 bit.

I had many Pcs before, I used the English keyboard on all of them. If i want to type é for example, I would type ALT-130. On my current laptop the ALT functionality doesn't exist, i tried messing around in the control panel but couldn't fix it.

EDIT

  • I see no num lock key, that's my keyboard

  • I don't want to transform my keyboard to AZERTY, I want to use the standard English QWERTY keyboard.

Hp primary internal battery error 601 at boot

I was using ubuntu 12.04 and a file transfer was going on when i saw the battery applet was showing 1 min remaining. I immediately shut down the laptop and when i plugged it after some time, from that moment onwards at the boot time this message is showing up for 15 sec -

HP Battery Alert
The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.
Primary (internal) Battery (601)
ENTER - Continue Startup
For more information, please visit: www.hp.com/go/techcenter

I am sure the battery is just fine since it is working just fine. I also tried removing and inserting the battery again several times. I tried fully charging the battery but the message keep showing up. How to solve the issue or atleast diable the message and boot normally. It is happening at the boot time before the os loads.

I also tried to do this but the in system diagnosis the battery test option is missing.

Why I'm unable to use up/down arrows in my BIOS?

My BIOS is loading and when I wanted to change anything, the up/down arrows aren't working. What might be the problem? I want to change boot options, but I'm unable to select the boot from CD option.

My BIOS version is f2.3. Do I need to upgrade it? I need my system for 2 more months continuously and I'm afraid if there might be some problem upgrading. But anyway, what might be the cause for this behavior?

For you info I have the pavilion dv6 series laptop, BIOS version: f.23 processer: Intel(R) core(TM) i3 CPU M 370 @ 2.40ghz 2.40GHZ 2.40 GHZ

Where to find "sleep mode" drivers for debian distro?

I have HP pavillion g6 dualbooted, running windows 7 and crunchbanng 11, 64 bit, based on debian wheezy.

My crunchbang won't wake from sleep mode, I had similar problem on windows 7, solved the issue by downloading drivers from HP site (downloaded them all), but i can't seem to find these on the official HP site for debian.

Some people say that i need to remove nomodeset but crunchbang won't boot if i do so.

I have a CD containing drivers for debian firmware, I downloaded it from Debian website, solved the bluetooth problem using it, but i can't seem to find the right driver for sleep mode.

Here's all the info you need to know about my graphic card

Why does the monitor fade on my HP Pavilion dv6?

When I turn on my HP Pavilion DV6 it starts normally. Windows (win7) is loaded and a few seconds after that the screen fades. It doesn't go completely black, it fades to 99% black. External monitor plugged in works normally.

What I have done so far is:

  1. Installed Linux on the laptop. The same problem
  2. Installed Win 7 32b again, installed all updates + latest drivers. The same problem
  3. Entered BIOS and restored to default settings. The same problem
  4. Updated BIOS from ver. 14 to 18. The same problem
  5. Run diagnostic tools. In the BIOS diagnostic log, there is error 0106 repeating many times. Couldn't find what it means.
  6. Removed the battery. The same problem

I noted that when going into BIOS the screen fades as well, and as it is the same with Linux, I think the problem cannot be drivers, updates or OS related. Another thing is that when I toggle windows button + 'P' and set it to projector only, the screens turns completely black (as it should) and when I set it to 'duplicate screen' the laptop screen starts working again for a couple of seconds and fades to 99% black again.

Why is this happening?

I just re-installed a fresh copy of Windows 7 on an HP laptop. Why is it so slow?

I got a new HP laptop, went through and uninstalled all the default HP programs on there, and that caused the whole system to crash.

So I took a fresh Windows 7 Home Premium disc, and used it to first reformat the hard drive completely, and install everything fresh.

The trouble is... it is unbelievably SLOW. It was nowhere near this slow before I reinstalled. I've been going through and reinstalling drivers (of course), but that doesn't seem to make a difference. Any ideas?

Brightness adjuster not found in control panel

I cant seem to find the brightness adjuster in my laptop after I reformatted it with windows 7 ROG Rampage(64 bit). My laptop is HP Pavilion dm4-1209tx. I also checked with the HP website and my drivers are all up to date. I also tried installing HP Quick Launch but was unable to do so probably because it is not supported by my OS. I've run out of ideas anymore. Any advice? Thanks!

Laptop LCD backlight off after resuming from hibernate or sleep

When I put my laptop to hibernate or sleep while plugged in and I resume from hibernate or sleep on battery, the backlight is off. A faint image exists on the display, but is nearly impossible to read, suggesting a video driver problem. When I change GPUs using AMD PowerXpress switchable graphics, the backlight comes back on. Why would this occur, and how do I fix it?

The system is a custom-built HP Pavilion dv6z-3000 Select Edition laptop with Windows 7 Home Premium. There are two GPUs on this system, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 for low power and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 for high performance. The system is running an OEM version of the Catalyst drivers that appears to be version 10.3, based on the internal version number supplied by HP. Would I lose any OEM features in upgrading the Catalyst drivers (which may be necessary to fix the problem)?

Edit: I've updated Catalyst, and the problem seems to be gone. I can't say for sure at this time, so I'm not posting this as an answer. I'll update the question as needed. If anyone can reproduce this, let me know.

Edit 2: Unfortunately, the problem still recurred on me at least once. What exactly is the problem?

Edit 3: This problem only occurs when the system is set to use the high-performance HD 5650 GPU. PowerPlay is disabled. Any ideas? The problem is still unresolved.

For now, an answer will remain accepted, but if anyone can give a better answer, I will gladly accept the better answer.

Keyboard acting wierdly : Virus or Hardware issue?

I'm using HP Pavilion laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate running on it. Problem is:

  1. Enter key on the keyboard doesn't seem to work
  2. This problem is strange, It may sound wierd but let me see how to put in a better way. Keys on my keypad can be categorized into two categories:

Category a. Keys which activate Enter : Home row keys except G,H {i.e. asdf;lkj} fit into this category
Category b. Keys which don't activate Enter : All keys except above doesn't.

So, what happens is when ever I hit any of the category a keys, it activates enterkey (doesn't mean Enter starts working but there will be automatic, continuous striking of enterkey until interrupted by a key from category b.

Example in a notepad if you just type letter a then it will automatically followed by too many \r\n until a key from category b is typed.

I'm typing this question, by using on screen keyboard (osk.exe) for category a keys. I hope you understood the situation.

Well my question is:

Is it virus? or Keyboard Problem? or Motherboard Problem? What exactly is causing it? How to rectify it?
