I own a HP Laserjet 2840 multifunction printer. It's a fabulous device, but on Windows 7 it can't network scan. HP doesn't seem to support it in anything greater than Vista, and they aren't forth coming with solutions.
I'm curious if anyone else has gotten work arounds to this problem.
One possible avenue for me is that I have an always-on Gentoo server that is configured to see the printer as a fax and printer using hplip. I have this shared via samba and I can print just fine through samba. Is there a similar way I can do network scanning? Anyone know of where I start looking for this?

I have an HP LaserJet 4200 printer that is acting really weird. I can print from internet just fine, no problem... but when I try to print from a document used in Microsoft Word, for example, I always get:
Manual Feed Tray 1
It's a networked printer and only an administrator account can make changes to it.
I have also tried:
- resetting the printer back to factory settings
- uninstalling and reinstalling on the PCs and the server it is connected to
I should also add that it is asking for "Plain Letter" in tray 1.

I've recently upgraded a machine to Windows 7 x64. This machine has a 1012 printer attached. According to HP's site, the printer is no going to be supported in Windows 7. Are there generic drivers that may suffice?
Is there even such a thing as a generic printer driver?

This April 1st, Someone logged into the printers and changed the ready screen to "vote for josh" on numerous hp laserjet printers. Know that they must have logged in via telnet.
And I found this article about how to perpatrate this activity:

I am just wondering, how can i figure out who has done this mischief? Does HP telnet on printers keep an access log? if so, how can i access it?

I regularly need to print a document that takes the top half of an 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of paper. I end up folding the page in half after it's printed so that I can store it easier.
It recently occurred to me that cutting the paper in half before the printing would let me save money on computer paper.
I'm going to be cutting the paper in half 'hamburger'-wise, not 'hotdog' style.

I've tested my HP laserjet and it takes the half sheets without issue.
What happens to the extra toner, though, if a page gets printed that has a full page of text while the printer is still loaded with these half-sheets?
Does the toner disperse in the printer? Does it get reclaimed? Is this harmful or safe?

I'm running a 64 bit Windows 7 / Windows 2008 R2 workstation that I just installed. I need to add a printer that is shared on the network from a 32bit Windows 2000 print server.
This is an HP LaserJet 5Si printer, the drivers for which HP tells me are automatically built into Windows 7/R2. However, whenever I connect to the printer or try to add it, I get the following screen:
Upon clicking OK, I get this screen asking me to locate the driver:
How can I possibly locate a driver that is SUPPOSED TO BE NATIVELY SUPPORTED on Windows 7/R2? The tough part is that this printer is one of many shared on a server and does not have a direct IP address. Even worse: I have no access to the print server so I cannot put the 64 bit drivers on there.
Any ideas?

HP doesn't make a Vista driver either. It claims it is natively supported by Vista and 7, which is true because I am able to create a local printer on a fake tcp/ip port and Windows lets me pick the proper driver. However, when adding from the network, Windows does not let me select a driver and demands an INF.
I tried searching the entire sub-structure of the C:\Windows directory and could not find any INF files that contain HP information. The INF might be located somewhere in the Windows installation DVD, but all the files on the DVD are compressed and unrecognizable.

I installed the proper printer driver as a local printer (with no printer attached) and it installed. However, this did not change the fact that it STILL asks me to provide drivers when connecting to the networked printer.

My boss was kind enough and gave me an option for buying a new printer for future from now available funds. I suggested him to buy rather new cartridges because the current printer has been used very little and is yet working great.
Then I did some R&D about cartridges' price. To my surprise, it was huge. Since, I could remember the actual price of our printer, the price of four cartridges(KCYM) was much higher than that of printers' price.
This printer (please ignore the list price) has these four cartridges. Actually, the place where we shall be making this purchase has exactly the double price (collectively) for four individual cartridges, than that of printer itself. And, a new color laser-jet printer, of course, comes with four filled cartridges.
Why is this so?
P.S. I have tried by best but, not sure yet if my question falls under this scope. Please guide me if wrong. Moreover, I have tried to figure-out the reason but have not succeeded.

Frankly speaking, Shouldn't we buy two more printers rather than four cartridges?

We have a HP Color LaserJet 2605dn at work that recently lost its mind. The red and blue colors are offset from where they should be and producing a rather trippy 3D look. I've performed a manual calibration through the menus and poked at just about everything I could find. These toner cartridges are not new (as you can see they're about 50% used) but only just recently started this problem. They were working great up until this error appeared. It happens on mac, pc, and via the printer menu printouts so I don't think it's a driver problem. The printer has been restarted and reset and is running the newest firmware.
Anyone have any ideas?

I have an HP LaserJet P2055d printer. Printer quality can be chosen between 600 dpi, FastRes 1200, ProRes 1200, ProRes 1200 (156 lpi) and ProRes 1200 (180 lpi).
What is the difference between ProRes 1200, ProRes 1200 (156 lpi) and ProRes 1200 (180 lpi)? Which one has the best quality?

I'm currently using an HP Color LaserJet 3700 PCL5 Printer Driver with Windows 7 (64bit) Operating System..I suspect I need an HP Color LaserJet 3700 PCL6 Printer Driver since my PCL5 works but not correctly..I can't change from "color" to "greyscale" with the PCL5 driver..and I can't specify multiple copies for printing with the PCL5 driver..I can do all this with the PCL6 driver on another computer..however, the other computer's operating system is WinXP..HP's website is no help for downloading a Win7 driver for this printer..am I missing something??..

After upgrading to 10.6 my printer became unavailable to print to. It behaved as if the driver crashed (when I chose to add the printer over Bonjour) and was removed by the OS. Reinstalling the drivers from HP actually worked out pretty well, but as you can see, four sets of options are now disabled for me:
This means I cannot print in greyscale, and I cannot choose to print from manual feed or set the paper type to a label or photo-paper.
The message I get when I choose Paper is:
The bundle "Paper" couldn't be loaded because it doesn't contain a
version for the current architecture.
If anyone knows a workaround for this, or spots updated drivers from HP, I'd like to know. The driver version reports itself to be 1.3.
As the printer is discontinued, and clearly the drivers are some of the few which were written by ZenoGraphics, all HP can do is make it clear via their mirthful businesslike royalty-free clip-art that they think the joke's on me:
Update: The latest drivers on 10.6.6 are versioned 1.3.0.261 and move these features around (Duplex seems hidden, but I see greyscale under printer features and then color options. Also the paper choice is there too. So that's kind of a fix. This driver came in the Driver Update 2.4.1 on June 30 2010. That was some wait.
Update: If anyone landing on this page finds they cannot print over the network, but that they can print over USB, it's because of a change in Rendevous aka Bonjour aka Zeroconf aka mDNS.
This is not my issue at all. But I have an answer to those people's problem. Update the printer to the latest firmware update from the support site (you must run the update with a Windows PC if you want a network update, other wise use the update with USB on a Mac). The Bonjour implementation on the printer was very buggy for the Mac (though not the PC, possibly endianness differences in some part of the communication?)

I have a problem with our old HP Laserjet 4L.
The paper jam indicator flashes after the printer fed the 2nd sheet of paper a few centimetres into the machine. The first page after powering on the printer after some time always gets printed, but it gets stuck at all following pages. However, when I press the button, the printer is correctly transporting the sheet and throwing it out of the correct slot, but without printing on it.
After studying several service manuals and long researching on the web I found out that there is a photo sensor (TLP833, I think) that checks the state of an arm that gets moved when the sheet of paper is passing through the machine. The paper stops about where the second position it detects is: Paper is taken from the box or manual feed. Normally, this position commands the paper transport motor to stop and wait until the fixing unit is hot and the page is loaded into memory etc so it would be ready to print.
But this does not happen, as the paper jam indicator immediately flashes and the printing process stops.
I assumed first that the photo sensor is defect because it seemed like it does not detect that the paper arrived and therefore assumes that it got stuck anywhere = paper jam before entering the printing module. But I read that those photo sensors almost never die and it does not fit to the fact that every first page after a long period without AC connection was printing successfully.
Now my second guess is that there must be a capacitor that charges at some time during the first printing process and does not get properly discharged, but has to be in order to allow a new sheet of paper to be detected. No idea whether this is true, just a guess. I unfortunately was not able to see any suspicious changes like a blown up capacitor, a defect soldering joint or anything that looked burned on the circuit board.
My question now is whether somebody had a similar problem and how it could be solved or at least if you have any ideas on where to get a circuit diagram, how to check which components or any other advice that could help me to get that good old box back to work.

I like to print on pre-printed stationery using the Preview.app and a duplex-capable HP Color Laserjet 4700 (PostScript) printer. The print dialog handles one and two-paged documents differently: the paper needs to be placed differently into the tray if the document contains one page versus when it contains two pages. This is not obvious when printing on plain paper but becomes obvious when front and reverse side of sheets are marked. Otherwise the first page would end up on the reverse side of the first sheet.
I believe the problem is caused by the printer driver setting duplex printing to false (using the PostScript setpagedevice operator) when emitting a single-page document versus keeping it set to true when emitting multi-page documents. All this despite that duplex printing is always specified in the printer dialog. When printing a single-sided document, duplex=true and duplex=false seem to make a difference with respect which side of a sheet gets printed on.
It would be also helpful if others could confirm the problem actually exists. I suspect this problem is not limited to specific printers. I'm on OS X 10.6 and I checked two different HP printers.

I have an HP Color LaserJet CM1015 MFP printer that's been in storage over a year. It worked perfectly before putting it in storage, but since I took it out it's practically unusable, since it prints random colors onto the pages as you can see in this photo.

I know that HP has no intention of providing driver support for older model printers (their web site solution is telling me to buy a new printer).
However, is there a work-around that will allow me to use the HP LJ 1000 printer in Windows 7 (64bit)? What about a "generic" driver for the LaserJet? Any suggestions? Will I need to trick Windows into accepting the printer?
