How to create a non ad-hoc hotspot connection on Windows XP?

I want to share my cabled connection with a Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone, which however does not support ad-hoc connections (at least if one does not tweak it).
Is there some software to do this in Windows XP? All the programs I tried require Windows 7 or 8, as they rely on the new netsh commands (which are not available in XP).

I stress that I don't want to root my phone.

How can I start hostednetwork on Windows 8

I have the same problems as the guys over

How can I start hostednetwork on Windows 7? and Can't get hostednetwork started in Windows 8 x64

But none of the solutions worked for me. I don't know why. I also followed multiple tutorials.

http://www.talkofweb.com/netsh-wlan-hostednetwork-the-hosted-network-could-not-be-started/ http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-1879130/turn-wifi-hotspot.html

None of them worked either. The problem: When I'm typing in netsh wlan start hostednetwork I always get the error

The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation.

My output netsh wlan show drivers is german, but maybe you can still understand :o

To help: It says under "supports hosted networks = YES"

Is a Wi-Fi AP just a piece of software + a Wi-Fi card?

As I have seen till now every device having a Wi-Fi card has been able to act as a Wi-Fi Access Point.
So is a Wi-Fi AP just software managing a Wi-Fi NIC to act as an AP?
If yes, then what does the software do in detail to act as a Wi-Fi AP?

Wifi signal goes low while connecting to my WiFi Hostspot?

I run a WiFi hotspot from my Windows 8.1 PC (Windows 10 Technical preview from last few days). When I try to connect from my android, the signal strength goes low and then results in authentication problem.

But after or before that, i.e. when the WiFi access point is only listed, it shows excellent signal strength.

Why does it happen so, or is there a remedy for that ?

Creating laptop wifi hotspot losing ssid when sharing connection

I have created a wifi hotspot on my work laptop I started the hostednetwork and in the network and sharing page I could see the ssid 'hotSpot1' under the wireless network connection 2 (WNC2) icon. I also could see the ssid in the currently connected to part of the available networks page when selecting the bottom right hand corner bars. i.e.

currently connected to:

workcompany.com internet access

hotspot1 No internet access

However when I share the wireless network connection (WNC) that the workcompany.com is connected to with hotspot1. The ssid is changed to workcompany.com. so both WNC and WNC2 ssid's are displaying workcompany.com.

I have also lost the ssid in the 'currently connected to' section as well it now displays:

currently connected to:

workcompany.com internet access

When I look for hotspot1 from my mobile device I cannot find it. Anybody got any clues. Please help.

p.s. the workcompany.com internet is a domain (if it helps)

How to find directory with most writes and/or turnaround (write and delete)

is there a way under linux to find out directory with frequent writes and/or deletes?

I'm using Ubuntu and recently bought SSD. I moved /tmp to ramdisk and did some other tweaks to avoid wear. But I was wondering if there's a way to pinpoint hotspots in filesystem where files are often written. For example webserver's log directory with many appends every minute or user's download directory where he downloads gigabytes of stuff only to be moved elsewhere soon after finishing.

I came across inotify which could probably do the trick but it seems it'd require lot of scripting which I'm not very familiar with :-/

Windows7: Auto start Ad-hoc hotspot if no preferred WiFi network is available

I am on Windows7 and have two different WiFi routers with two different networks at home. But sometimes both these networks are not available, in that case I want my Windows7 machine to start a hot spot on it's own and start providing the WiFi connectivity.

On Windows7. Control Panel> Network and Internet> Manage Wireless Networks I created the ad-hoc network connection which will take care of hotspot thing. I put this connection as third in order of connectivity followed by two existing WiFi networks.

The problem is... unlike two other wifi networks, this one is an ad-hoc network, Win7 does not allow it to be connected automatically (due to security reasons) in case two other networks are not available.

This is a headless (without monitor) machine. I have to have some sort of connectivity to control it via VNC or RDP, hence want this hotspot to start automatically when two others WiFi networks are not available.

How to achieve this?

Macbook WiFi won't connect to public wifi hotspots, but works fine otherwise

I've looked at other posts with similar keywords, but none of them seemed to apply quite right.

(I have a Macbook purchased in June 2008)

I am able to use my home wifi, the wifi at my mom's house, and even my neighbor's unsecured connection.

However, every public wifi spot I've tried to work at fails. I AM ABLE TO "connect" to the network (Airport shows I am connected), but when I open a web browser I get a "Not connected to the internet" message. This has now occurred at four different locations. (Also, at one of them, I tried to connect with my iPod touch, and i was able to get online without issue.)

Also, when I first bought this macbook, I did not have this issue.

Any helpful suggestions? Thanks!

Force Windows 7 to use Android phone's MAC address as network identifier for hotspot to prevent network name addition/iteration

Background

  • I have a new Verizon Android (5.1) phone with a mobile hotspot running with a set HOTSPOT_NAME (the SSID) for the network, and having a WPA2 (AES) security.
  • I had a previous Verizon Android phone I did the same with.
  • I have Windows 7 computer using this hotspot for a network connection.

Issue (Updated)

With my previous phone, Windows 7 would link into the hotspot with its particular HOTSPOT_NAME all the time, no issues. With my current phone, Windows 7 is attaching a number to the NEW_HOTSPOT_NAME and iterating it every time I turn "on" the hotspot from the phone, such that I end up with NEW_HOTSPOT_NAME 1, NEW_HOTSPOT_NAME 2, NEW_HOTSPOT_NAME 3, etc. (I'm up to NEW_HOTSPOT_NAME 8 now), and each time it asks me if this is a "home," "work," or "public" network, as if it is a "new" network each time I log in, as it does not remember that I have linked to this network before.

Note:

  • The iteration does not occur if the hotspot itself stays "on" and I just disconnect and reconnect from Windows 7 itself. Only when the hotspot is turned off, and then turned back on does it iterate a new number.
  • I have tried deleting the network from Windows, renamed the network on the phone, and reestablish a connection. I still am getting a new set of iterations each time the hotspot is turned on after having been turned off. (And of course, I do not want the hotspot running continuously if I am not using it, eating up power).
  • As best I can tell, the old phone ran the same security setting (though it does not make me aware if it is AES or not, but I believe that has been a standard for some time now—at least the last couple years when I started using my previous phone as a hotspot). I don't even know if the security setting has anything to do with it, but thought I should note this anyway.

More Background

I have discovered there are other post relaying essentially the same issue, but the solutions there are not viable for me:

However, this answer to the last question appears to be particularly relevant, as it notes some reasoning why this occurs:

Windows does quite a bit of guessing when it tries to identify "which" network it is a member of. The most common of which is using the mac-address of the default-gateway. If the MAC of your default gateway changes... it will prompt you again to identify your network.

Some portable-hotspot apps make the android-device behave as the gateway, while others pass on the gateway directly to your telco's default-gateway(s). In the first case where your phone is acting as the gateway... these are usually apps you can find from 3rd parties (like the android-wifi-teather app.) In the other-case, these are usually limited to apps provided by your telco... so they can track your tethering-usage statistics & such.

This makes sense, but the problem is the app linked to requires a rooted phone (which I do not have, nor do I want to do, as it will void my warranty). So is there either:

  1. Some app for non-rooted phones that makes the gateway be the device itself (I have not yet found one)? or
  2. Some way to force Windows 7/Android phone through some configuration of one or both to link the phone itself as the default gateway for the network (that is not just a repeat of the processes given in the answers in those other questions [warning: I will downvote such an answer])?

Automate BTWiFi login using a FON account

I'm a user of British Telecom's Wifi hotspot. The service is good, but after some time of inactivity it logs me off and asks for user name and password.

It's really annoying in the long run.

Did anybody already reverse-engineer the login system and produced a Python/Bash/Perl script?

Or is there a generic way to do these kind of things?
