Import SVG files to Google Docs as a drawing

I've got a drawing I made in SVG format, and I'd like to include it in a Google document I'm writing. I tried uploading the SVG file, but it only lets me view it, not edit it.

Any Google searches for uploading SVG to Google Docs find lots of people asking for the feature, but no hints of how to do it. Is it impossible for now?

Is there any API for Google drawings? Any way to create a Google drawing other than dragging a mouse around on their web site? I tried uploading an OpenOffice text document that included a drawing, but the drawing got removed.

Is there a way to get an embed link for a Google Drawing?

I have a drawing in Google Docs Drawings, and I would like to embed a PNG/GIF of it in a web page, but I would like the embedded image to remain up to date with any changes made to the drawing.

Is there a way to do this? It wouldn't matter if the image was only updated once per day or something, by the way.

Ideally I would like something like this:

<img src="docs.google.com/drawing/png?docid=123456789123456789&width=400&height=200"/>

In copy/paste, Google Docs says "These actions are unavailable via the Edit menu, but you can still use Ctrl C" etc?

When selecting copy/paste from the right-click menu, why does Google Docs pop up a dialog to say "Copying and Pasting in Google Docs", with the message "These actions are unavailable via the Edit menu, but you can still use Ctrl-C or Ctrl-V" etc when it could just do the operation direct from the menu?

Copy and Paste is in the menu...

copy and paste is in the menu

...but selecting it says you can't do it, use Ctrl-C etc but selecting it says you can't do it, use Ctrl-C etc

What was the design thinking behind this? I can't understand why one can't just do the operation, after all:

  1. It provides the menu options: copy and paste
  2. when you select these, it knows what they are to tell you
  3. it can do the copy and paste but via Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V etc.
  4. Surely they can link the Google Docs code that handles the menu selection with the code that actually does the operation

Was it a patent issue? A security issue? Or some kind of user interface conflict that made this extra step mandatory?

Is it possible to create mutli-page drawings in Google Drawings?

I've been through all of the controls, but I don't see anything that would allow creating a new page. I have a group of related drawings that I'd like to put in a single package.

My current Plan B is to create a presentation in Google Slides, but the drawing tools are pretty weak there.

Connectors (lines and arrows) in Google drawings

When creating a flowchart in Visio I can choose how connectors will be rendered as:

  • right-angle
  • straight
  • curved

But when drawing the same chart in Google drawing there only seems to be straight type. I can't seem to find a way to draw lines at right angles? Is that possible?

But even though there isn't any possibility to draw right-angled connectors by default there are two missing features that would make such task at least easier to accomplish:

  1. ability to add manual alignment guidelines - using these one could put two to easily draw two straight lines that would connect perfectly at intersection
  2. ability for lines to have connection points similar to shapes - using these one could position one line and then draw the other and connect it to the other line making both of them connected

How do you solve this problem?

How to select smaller objects without selecting larger covered object in Google Slides or Google Drawing

  1. Create a new Google Slides in Google Drive.
  2. Add three boxes: Box1 is a larger box, inside of it are two smaller boxes, Box1 and Box2: enter image description here
  3. Then try to select just Box2 and Box3, without also selecting Box1.
  4. It does not work. I've tried using Shift and Ctrl modifiers in various ways and it does not work.

The workaround is very costly: I have to first move Box1 aside, then drag a selection rectangle around Box2 and Box3, move both of them to a new location, and then move Box1 back into place. That is bad because I have now lost the original location of Box1.

Is that workaround the only way?

(Note that this is about Google Slides, Google Drawing, or using Google Drawing within a Google Document, not about selecting text inside Google Documents or cells inside Google Spreadsheets. Nor is this about any Microsoft products.)

Is there an option for a semitransparent text background in Google Drawing?

I am making announcements in google-drawings and the text isn't as visible as I want. Is there a way to make the text background color semitransparent?

How can I transfer the formatting of an object to another in a Google Drawing?

In a Google Docs Drawing, how can I transfer the orange background and red outline of the box on the left to the other boxes, e.g. with something like a "format transfer" icon (the broom) in Excel and Google Spreadsheets:

View a ruler in Google Drawing

I am trying to draw an image as follows, using Google Drawing.

Google drawing image - trying to draw a grid

As, one can see I need these lines to be equidistant. Currently, I did that by using a square from top to first marking line. For, this to be easy, I need rulers to left and top. For example see the following screenshot from Word below:

Word 2013 - with rulers on left and top

Is there an option to turn on a ruler or something similar in Google Drawing?

When updating a Google Drive Drawing on desktop web app, does iOS version update automatically?

I've done a markup in Google Drive drawings on my computer in the browser. I'm talking to someone on the phone while they are looking at the drawing on their iOS device, do the drawings live update, like a doc or spreadsheet?

The obvious answer here would be try it out yourself, but I've had a look at it seems to either be a) extremely slow to update (I haven't seen it update at all this way) OR b) it only updates 'sometimes' when you leave the drawing and re-enter it.

Has anyone had any experience with this or is it normally quicker and Google Drive is just being a bit slow at the moment?

Font or Word Art in Google Drawing

I have a drawing in Google Docs. I want to change the font of a text box. Looking at the help page How to use text in drawings, I see that apparently the only way to change the font is to use Word Art. It says in the previous link and in the answer How do you get word art on Google documents? that I can insert word art, and it is the T symbol in the second row of Shapes, but I don't see it here: enter image description here

How to control placement of asymmetric image masks in google sheets or drawings

Google sheets and drawings allows the use of vectors masks over images from any of their standard vector shapes. Some of these shapes are asymmetric, but I cannot figure out how to change the orientation of the asymmetric mask.

As an example, say I have the following image in google drawings: original I can apply an asymmetric image mask and get the following output: enter image description here But as far as I can tell, there's no way for the cut out sections to be on the bottom. If I try flipping the image, the crop gets flipped with it, and I get: enter image description here Is there any way to do what I want, or is this simply unsupported?

Insert Google Drawing into Gmail body

I am using Yet Another Mail Merge with Google Spreadsheet and Gmail and it works just as expected.

But I am also trying to add a google drawing into the email body, so I would have more flexibility to have text areas (I have not found a way to enter a text area in gmail).

The email merge works out of email draft. So I am trying to have a text area (where I can add the spreadsheet fields) on top of a image then export to email.

Once I copy to web clipboard and try to paste onto email body, the text box slides down the picture. And it looses some details.

Any suggestion?

In summary: have a text box on top of image inside the body of email. Text box to have Spreadsheet details. Everything works OK in the google drawing, but it does not seem to be able to export to gmail.

Thank you for any suggestion.

Is there a drawing web application that supports clickable web links? [closed]

I like Google draw, but I found it is impossible to insert clickable links into the drawings.

Do you know of a similar service where clickable links are possible?

I tried already LucidChart, http://create.ly and http://www.diagram.ly but could not find such a feature. Will have to look at Cacoo, Gliffy, and Lovely Charts later. I will also check if Zoho has a drawing application.

(MindMeister dos not count here, it is a mindmapping software and free drawing and connecting shapes with lines does not really work.)
