Searching within Gmail's nested labels

Consider this setup in my Gmail inbox where I have 3 lists:

  • mailing-lists/first-list
  • mailing-lists/second-list
  • mailing-lists/third-list

If I want to search for all unread messages in any sub-label of mailing-lists, is there a better way to search than

is:unread label:mailing-list/first-list OR label:mailing-list/second-list OR label:mailing-list/third-list

What I'm looking for is something more like:

is:unread label:mailing-list/*

How to move Gmail sub-label out of hiearchy

In Gmail, I have some hierarchical labels:

A/B/C

I want to make C a top-level label, but can only find a way to rename it in its current position in the hierarchy or introduce a new hierarchical level.

I suppose I could apply a new label to all the mails in C, then remove the old hierarchical label, then rename the new label, but I wonder if I'm overlooking a more direct way?

How do I organize my labels in Gmail?

I have more than 100 labels in my Gmail account. They are currently displayed as a long list on the left side of the screen, and it's becoming quite difficult to use. Is there a way I can group certain labels? For example, I'm subscribed to a number programming mailing lists and want to group those labels as "Mailing lists" and collapse them, like folders in a file-system.

How to add filter and label to group in Gmail contacts?

I have my Gmail contacts sorted into groups. In my mail I also have labels associated with filters-for specific people I have a filter associated with a label.

For the filter creation, how do I associate a filter with a group in the 'contacts'. In other words, 'family' which is a group label in my contacts; rather than the list of email addresses?

Automatic Gmail labels based on sender

Is there some way to make Gmail apply a label to incoming mail automatically based on the sender? For instance if Bob is my client, and all contact I have with Bob is work-related, can I make Gmail automatically apply the label 'CLIENT' to all incoming messages from Bob?

I would also be interested in a similar feature based on the recipient email address because I use my Gmail to check several accounts.

Is there a way to display the number of messages for any label in the Gmail label list?

The Gmail sidebar displays the list of our labels (or some of them, according to settings). Next to every label name there is a number showing how many unread messages we have for that label.

Is there a way to display also the total number of messages for each label?

Example:

[to answer] (0/36)
[to do] (0/55)
[waiting answer] (0/7)
cooking (2/48)
family (6/352)
friends (1/1828)
website (2/412)
work (12/12801)

Searching Gmail for messages without a particular label

I need to find, in Gmail, a list of all my unread messages — which I can get via is:unread or label:unread or l:^u — which do not have the label "ZDNet."

In other words, my requirement is this:

I have 185 e-mails which are "unread" in my Inbox.
I have 174 "unread" e-mails which are labeled "ZDNet."
I need to find the 11 e-mails in my inbox that are not part of the group of 174.

How can I do this?

What's the difference between the 'Move to' and 'Apply label' features in Gmail?

I'm confused about the Move to and Labels feature in Gmail.

What's the difference between the two?
Why does the Move to option not appear sometimes?

How can I import mail from one Gmail account to another, preserving my label structure?

I'd like to import mail from one account to another, but I have 10 or so labels in the one I want to export from. What's the easiest way to get the same labels on the same email messages on the new account?

Removed label from message in Gmail, and message disappeared!

I had one label on a message, and then I clicked "Remove Label" when that message was selected. Now I can't find that message - it's not in the Inbox, and of course not in the label that I removed from it

Can someone explain to me what I did wrong and where my message is?

How can I filter my Gmail messages that aren't labeled?

I'd like to sort all of my Gmail messages that don't have label, so I can process them (I miss some every now and then). I can sort by every label by clicking on it at the left, but how do you sort the unlabeled ones?

Creating a filter in Gmail that applies more than one label

I've been using Filters for a while in Gmail but have always been wondering if such a feature is available. Is it possible to somehow have a Gmail filter apply more than one label?

As you can see below, the filter setup page only allows choosing one label:

alt text

If it turns out that it is impossible to specify more than one label, I guess I'll just have to create duplicate filters.
