Browsing through Firefox's Add-ons list, I've discovered that there is one named Google Update, which I don't remember installing.
How did it get on Firefox's list of installed Add-ons, or plugins, and what is it doing there?

When I visit any page containing some animated gif
s (Google+, 9gag etc), all those seem to start loading. My bandwidth is limited and I don't want those to be downloaded unless I really want to view. I have seen some plugins which just stop animation but the image itself is downloaded anyway. 9gag.com had initially this feature which just showed a static image (if it is an animated gif) and started downloading only after I clicked on it (they have removed it now).
So, is there any plugin which can stop downloading gif? Or, do I need to write an extension? Any suggestion?

Is there a way (in Chrome/Firefox) to individually mute audio per page/tab? This would be great when listening to music while browsing sites that play audio without asking for user prompt first.

Normally I use Firefox with the option "allow pages to choose their own fonts" UNselected, but now and again there's a site I'd like to view using their fonts instead of mine... Is it possible to set this option on a per-domain basis? A plugin maybe?

Anyway here is my problem. I'm currently on beta channel (Firefox 6) which was recently upgraded and broke some extensions. Now I gather those extensions will be upgraded in the future and they'll restore to working order. Is there a way for me to disable further beta updates and keep my Firefox on a stable channel without losing my settings and extensions? Is there a way to backup Firefox 6 or disable updating to a beta version (but keep the updating to a stable versions)?

Is there a way I can simulate various connection speeds from within Firefox?
I need to be able to check http://localhost
with varying speeds.
I know there are standalone applications that can do this, but I'd rather do this inside Firefox via a plugin or similar.

I've been using vimperator for a few months and loving it (although it makes it hard for me to go back to primitive mousery on others' computers). I've seen that there's a fork called Pentadactyl, but I can't tell what the difference is. Is there any particular reason to use one over the other? Why was it forked?

I am essentially asking for a Firefox equivalent to the Chrome extension called MuteTab - a way to identify which tabs are making sounds and then mute them accordingly.
Is there a such extension for Firefox? Any other ideas?
This would be especially helpful with websites that sit in the background and then sneak up on you and start making sounds, like with ads. You would have to go through all 100 tabs to find the guilty one and terminate it.
I have noticed that the forum section at Tom's Hardware can start playing embedded videos and make disturbing sound this way when you are not currently viewing tab it's on, even though you have not refreshed the page (although it looks like they automatically refresh the page for you after a given time).
Flashmute and Flashblock are mentioned as alternatives. But they don't really work the same way as MuteTab. Even Mozillazine mentions these tools for in-browser muting of tabs. Trying to download Flashmute only results in Cannot GET /flashmute.aspx
. I don't think it's maintained anymore. And Flashblock completely blocks Flash content.

In Firefox, how can I prevent pages from overriding Firefox built-in keyboard shortcuts through Javascript on a per-key basis? Preferably on a per-site basis, too? The most frustrating override is the forward slash ('/') that's linked to "Find in page". Sites like Google search results, Twitter timelines, some wikis, and other pages steal the slash key for their own search boxes, which is completely wrong.
Since my rep lets me ask, edit, and answer questions, but not add comments, this is basically a duplicate of these other two questions that weren't properly answered:
How do a stop a website for overriding my keyboard short cuts
Firefox: don't allow websites to override the / (slash) key

I would like to save as a Firefox bookmark a page which is not accessible using GET. The only way to retrieve the page is to send some POST data.
For example, I would like to bookmark a Chronopost parcel tracking page, which only allows POST for entering parcel numbers.
Does anyone know a Firefox extension, or some other technique, which would allow me to do this?

Is there any extension for a browser that allows you to change the structure of links in Google search, so that it doesn't look like this:
http://www.google.com.ph/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBcQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.intowindows.com%2Fdownload-vlite-for-windows-7%2F&rct=j&q=vlite%20for%20windows%207&ei=mb66TOn4HYumvgP0kPW3DQ&usg=AFQjCNFj7Vo_pgyHyqoCC31j9jpeeJwd-Q&cad=rja
I want to copy the address of the result page so that when I right-click and copy the link address, I will only get something like this:

I want to analyze my web surfing habits, and could use something to monitor how long I stay on a page with seconds precision.
Anything like this?

I'd like to know if there is any way to edit text in Vimperator (for example input boxes or Gmails web interface)? The way one edits text in Vim and can navigate e.g. the use of "p", "yy" and "dd" etc.
If there is any way how to do this in Firefox, please share it.

Can I hide all images displayed on a page in Firefox?
I want to view the page in plain text only (with no images).
Is there any Firefox add-on for this?
