Change all file type associations from one program to another

Is it possible to easily change all file type associations that are currently associated with one program to another program in one batch? In my case, I am trying to change all files types currently associated with Notepad to instead use Notepad++ in Windows 7.

It's a pain to go through Default Programs > Set Associations because after each type the entire list re-populates, taking several seconds. Is there a way I can do a search and replace in the registry, or something even easier?

What format does Google Chrome Developer Tools save data as?

I am using Google chrome's developer tools to inspect the timeline of some requests. There is the option of storing them as a .HAR file, but I could not find anything that opens it. In a browser, it looks like a simple text file.

Does anybody know how to save Developer Tool's data in a suitable format or how to open .HAR files?

How do I set Notepad++ as the default editor?

I want set Notepad++ as the default editor. I tried to set it by right-clicking on a file, then Open With. But I did not see Notepad++ in the resulting list (even after clicking on Choose Other Programs).

When I try to redirect to Notepad++ through the Browse option to notepad++.exe file it is doing nothing. (Its not recognizing somehow)

We all know that Vista and Windows 7 doesn't let you specify custom extensions or customize them to your liking. What program do you use to edit file associations in Vista and Windows 7?

Just to be more clear, I'm looking for a program which lets you:

• Create new extensions (I am aware of the Open With > Set As Default).
• Customize the Icon
• Customize the file type name
• Allows the creation of custom actions
• Repair any non-working extensions

Presently, the Windows Vista/7 extension manager doesn't let you do any of those actions.

How do you associate the .exe file extension with a program in Windows?

A few years ago I saw somebody play a prank on somebody by associating the .exe file extension with Internet Explorer. This made Internet Explorer open up every time the person wanted to start a program.

Unfortunately, I forgot how this was done. I tried to use the Default Programs > Set Associations Control Panel tool, but it didn't list .exe.

How could one set this file association, and, perhaps more importantly, how could one unset it?

Programatically associate file extensions with application on Windows

I've just recently reinstalled Windows and in setting up my environment I've noticed that all my associations for the various programming languages I edit in Notepad++ have gone (naturally).

I am thinking for the future, wouldn't it be grand to have some kind of batch file that could automatically associate a selection of file extensions with N++ at the click of a button, rather than having to wait until I encounter all these extensions then go through the rigmarole of navigating to the N++ exe etc.

I can't do this with the Default Programs utility that comes with Windows 7, because it only works with extensions that have been 'encountered'.

So is it possible to programatically associate file extensions with application on Windows?

How to remove file association on Windows 8?

I have Chrome associated with .xlsx file on a Windows 8.1 machine

In Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations it is not possible to remove an association only to change it to another program.

In Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Default Programs\Set Program Associations, .xlsx is not present in Chrome.

I removed all keys from HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.xlsx.

Still Chrome remains associated with that extension in Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations, and Windows Explorer shows the Chrome icon with the .xlsx file.

Windows 8 is losing options in the "Open with" menu after changing file associations

When I set a program to open a specific file type by default, it works (like Word 2013 for PDF files). However, when I change the default back to reader, I lose Word as an option that I can pick in the open with sub-menu.

How can I get it to stick?

It seems that there is something special about Word. Adding Notepad++ as the default and then changing it back seems to keep Notepad++ on the sub-menu.

Word version is 2013.

In case it was not clear, I am using the RTM version (not the preview).

Why can't change the default program to open an extension in Windows 7?

I mistakenly assign Office Outlook to open my .eml files in Windows 7. But, as Outlook do not open such files, I downloaded Live Mail, but now I can not assign it to open this kind of file by default.

I've tried running Explorer as Administrator, not to avail.

How do I change my default browser to an unlisted program in Windows 7?

I use multiple browsers regularly, so I've written a script that will open pages in whatever browser is already running (or Firefox if there is none). I want to set this script as my default browser. When I go to the "Set Associations" dialog, select HTTP, and click "Change Program", the dialog that pops up doesn't allow me to select anything except one of the web browsers that I already have installed. This appears to be the case for all protocols (as opposed to file extensions, which allow you to choose from "Other Programs" or browse for a program that isn't listed). Windows help says nothing about this, and just says to use the "Browse..." button, which isn't available. I even tried the 3rd-party "Default Programs Editor", but it doesn't seem to be able to do this.

Is there a way that I can set my script as the default manually (maybe by editing the registry)?

How do I get ftype & assoc to match Windows Explorer?

I changed the association to use upon launching a .py file, via Windows Explorer:

1. Tools -> Folders -> File types.
2. Then browse to .py.
3. Change the association to Wordpad.

Now when I type the name of a py file in the command line, Wordpad opens it.

But assoc and ftype in the command line still return the following:

C:\> assoc .py
.py = Python.File

C:\> ftype Python.File
Python.File = "C:\Program\Python27\python.exe" "%1" %*

How come the association is working, but assoc and ftype are not aware of it?

I did restart the prompt.

I suppose this is what is showing up in ftype Python.File. But it does not seem to get used.

Windows 10 default programs keep changing

Since the fall update last month, Windows 10 automatically keeps changing the default apps for certain types (mostly browser,pdf,mp3,jpg). I have tried changing them back from the Settings app as well as the Control Panel.

I have observed that this happens mostly while unzipping files using WinZip. Windows changes the default programs back to Microsoft recommended programs such as Edge, Photos, Groove etc.

Is there a way to restrict this from happening? Has anybody else encountered a similar situation? I couldn't find similar question anywhere so I'm asking this here.

How to open xlsx files with Excel 2013 by default on windows 8?

My xslx files open systematically with Excel 2010 when I'd like them to use Excel 2013.

Everytime I

• right click
• select open with
• point to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\EXCEL.EXE

Then Excel 2010 (aka, office 14, not office 15) launches instead of Excel 2013 (Office 15)

The same problem appears on 2 colleague's desktop.

Has anyone encountered that ? Is there a workaround ?
