Is there any benefit of using HDMI over DVI?

I recently bought a Mac mini. It comes with an HDMI to DVI adapter. I bought a LG monitor that has an HDMI port.

My concern is: Is there any improvement when I connect the Mac Mini to the monitor using an HDMI cable?

Currently I am connecting to the monitor's DVI port via the adapter and it is working fine. I need to know whether there's any difference in using the HDMI port directly.

What maximal resolution is reasonable when using a VGA cable?

I own a laptop which only has VGA as a port for external displays. I'm thinking to buy an external flat-screen monitor for my laptop. Which resolution should the display have at the utmost so that I still have a reasonably sharp image?

Can I use a 27" iMac as a additional monitor for another 27" iMac?

I currently have a 27" iMac i7 with the 512mb ATI card. After looking at prices on other Apple displays it appears I can purchase another low-end 27" iMac (Core 2 Duo basic model) for less than a 30" display.

3 Part question:

  • Can I easily use the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor to my higher end iMac?
  • While I am using the lower-end iMac as an additional monitor can I still take advantage of its CPU to do things like run a webserver, compress video with Handbrake, etc?
  • Are there any other 27" LCD displays with the same resolution (2560 x 1440) cheaper than the basic iMac (~$1699.00 US)?

Any insights appreciated.

Unable to get 2560 X 1440 resolution to work

Problem -

I can't get 2560x1440 high resolution to work on my Dell 27" U2713HM Monitor.

Details -

I have a Dell E6520 LAPTOP running 64 bit Windows 8. The highest resolution on the laptop is 1920x1080.

It shows 2 display adapters under Device Manager

  • Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000
  • NVIDIA NVS 4200M

I checked to make sure drivers for both are latest. In my task tray I have both Intel graphics and NVIDIA managers.

I bought a Dell 27" U2713HM Monitor to use 2560 X 1440 resolution. Installed the Dell Display manager, latest drivers etc.

Connected monitor using Dual Link DVI through my docking station.

I just cant get the 2560 X 1440 high resolution. It only gives me 1920 X 1080 on the monitor. I even tried the HDMI connection.

Is this because my laptop display card has max resolution of 1920 X 1080?

So in order to use a certain max resolution, the display card in my laptop needs to support it?

If I see 2 display adaptors in Device manager, does it mean I have 2 display cards?

How can I get the Dell 27" U2713HM Monitor 2560 X 1440 resolution to work?

Convert iMac internal LCD panel to external monitor?

My iMac died (power supply issue, out of warranty), so I took it apart to get at the HDD to recover some files. In the process, I managed to remove the LCD panel.

My question is: is it possible/does there exist an adapter that I can use to convert this panel (with an internal connector) into an external monitor that accepts a DVI input?

Run a script when second monitor is connected

I currently have a TV attached to my computer via HDMI. When I set the TV's input to the appropriate HDMI port, it becomes visible to the computer and the computer adds it as a second display.

What I wanted to do is run a script (to launch XBMC) when the secondary monitor is connected.

OS is Windows 8.

Installing Windows on a laptop using an external monitor (main display broken)

I have an HP laptop, and I smashed the display, but I work on an external monitor. I want to reinstall Windows, but the external monitor works only if Windows is installed. What can I do?

How to tell Windows 7 "sleep when laptop is closed, unless there's an external monitor connected; then use that"?

Most of the time, I would like my Windows 7 laptop to sleep when I close it. But sometimes, I like to connect an external monitor over DVI.

I would like my laptop to use the external monitor when I close the lid, but only when a monitor is connected to the DVI port. Otherwise, sleep when closed.

Is there any way I can do that, without manually changing the power settings every time I decide to use the monitor?

Secondary monitor shuts off when laptop lid close

I have a new dell XPS laptop. My external Dell monitor attached to my laptop.Everything works fine if my laptop lid is open, but if I close the laptop lid, I lose the display on the monitor attached to laptop. How can I close the laptop and keep the display on the monitor showing?

I've already tried this solution http://www.troublefixers.com/stop-windows-7-laptop-from-sleeping-on-closing-lid/ but still problem is same.

Cannot enter BIOS due to broken screen

Lately my laptop (HP g42 247sb) screen is damaged, so I hook it up with an external monitor (LG something) and it works fine now.

The only annoying thing is I cannot navigate the BIOS menu for some tweaking because the BIOS not shown on the external monitor, instead, it only shown on the broken laptop screen, and it only output to my external monitor when Windows/OS is logged-on.

So, is there anyway I can force output during BIOS/BOOT/POST to my external monitor?

Things I have done and didn't work:

  1. Set my LG monitor as primary display on both window properties and Intel Graphics panel

  2. Enter the BIOS (F10 key) and press the Fn+F4 key (change display output).

  3. Disable and uninstall my internal screen (broken laptop screen) using device manager and restart, but Windows (BIOS?) install it back on log-on.

  4. Closed lid/Magnet on sensor.

How to reset video/display drivers in Vista without restarting OS?

Currently I have to reboot my system if an external monitor is hooked up for it to be correctly detected and used. I think it would be faster to restart/reset the video or display drivers instead. How do I do this under Vista?

I seem to remember from an old laptop using a Windows command-line command that would restart the wireless networking card device when it crashed. Is there something like that for video drivers?

Background/Reason Because people rightfully ask why? - This is part of a larger problem which I'm waiting for resolution on from the manufacturer. In the meantime I'm looking for the above quick fix. Actually my video card often crashes my laptop when attaching an external monitor and trying to detect or use it. No solution from vendor yet and latest drivers do the same irksome behaviour. Windows says:

A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

Daisy-chainable DisplayPort Monitors

I am the proud new owner of a MacBook Pro with a mini-DisplayPort. My desk setup used to allow me to position the screen of my old MacBook beside an external monitor, essentially allowing dual-head. It was also advantageous that my old MBP and my external monitor had the same resolution, 1440x900.

Now, I'm searching for a set of two monitors that I can use a HengeDock with. Unfortunately, the MacBook Pro suffers from having only one mini-DisplayPort.

Looking up the spec for DisplayPort 1.2 (which the MBP supports), DisplayPort daisy chaining is supported. What I'm looking for is a monitor that has two DisplayPorts so I can daisy chain two monitors off the single mini-DisplayPort.

What I don't want is a USB-based video solution. I need full acceleration on both monitors; an external video card won't cut it. I hope I don't have to wait a few years for these monitors to come out.

TL;DR: I need two monitors with two DisplayPorts each that I can daisy-chain.

Thanks!

Two identical external monitors, one through HDMI another VGA. Text on VGA looks blurry

I've tried a lot of things but I can't seem to get it working correctly. Below is my setup.

Laptop is a Dell Latitude E6535, which has Video chip/card NVidia NVS 5200M.

I have two external AOC IPS i2367Fh 23-Inch Screen LED Monitor. One connected to the laptop through HDMI and another through VGA.

Problem is, the text and overall image looks perfect and sharp on whichever of the two I connect through HDMI, while the VGA one just does not seem right, text does not look crisp, and just blurry enough that you cannot tell it's blurry, but you feel there's something wrong about it. I asked the wife to look at both monitors without telling her there was an issue, and she said the same thing.

Now, I have made sure it is not the cable because like I said, if I connect the monitor that looks odd through HDMI instead of VGA (i switch which monitor uses which cable), then it looks fine and the other looks bad. I've also tried two VGA cables.

When I go to the NVDIA settings, only one of the monitors can use the NVS 5200M chip, while the other one takes the Intel HD Graphics 4000 adapter, and I think that depends on which one I make my main display, but making the VGA monitor my main display (even though it would use the NVS 5200M) does not fix the issue. It will still look bad.

The resolution that I'm using is the native one for the monitors, 1920 x 1080.

I already tried tuning ClearType but did not fix it either.

Any ideas are welcome. Thanks

EDIT:

Thank you everyone for the responses/suggestions. It seems in order to get it working I will need either a docking station or an adapter. I'm considering the following:

LAST UPDATE:

The USB to HDMI adapter did NOT work for me at all. I just went with the docking station and DP to HDMI adapter and it worked flawlessly. Crisp image and text on both external monitors.

Linux: How to run a script when an external monitor is connected?

How can I detect when an external monitor is connected in linux?

I need to run various scripts to set up my workspace.

Is there some clever way to kick off a script when the monitor state has changed?

I'm using the Nvidia display driver.

3 displays with Dell Laptop (2 monitors + laptop display)

I have a Dell Latitude 8420. It is connected to a dock.

Is there any way to have two monitors connected to this setup and also use the laptop screen too? I want the desktop extended on the 3 displays. I am using Windows 7 Professional.

How would things change if I wanted to have 3 external monitors and not use the laptop display?
