I have the first and second editions of the same book with me. If I include them in Calibre, they are shown as separate entities.
Rather, I want them to be shown together (like, how files of the same book but different file types, are shown together).
How to do this?

I am looking for a way to assign tags to existing .pdf's (or other ebook files formats) without having to modify/move/copy any of them, on Windows. This is due to me already having them in an organized folder structure that I like.
How do I manage my eBooks files and add tags to them?

I like to read eBooks, but I tend to have a hard time keeping track on which page I am in which file. Is there a bookmark function or something similar that I'm not aware of?

I have a Kindle 2 and I have some books I did not purchase from the Amazon store. Mostly PDFs, text files and .mobi
files from other eBook stores.
Is there a way to export or otherwise back up my notes, highlights and bookmarks for those books?

Are PRC and MOBI files identical? If I make a working file with the extension .prc have the extension .mobi will it work just as well? The changing of file extension works when I've tested it, and I've found sources say they are, but not perfectly reputable ones
(I ask because we plan to sell these files, and I feel people recognise what MOBIs are better.)

I am using calibre for my e-book management software. Is there any way to export import whole database (Tags, tiles, authors list), so that I can import to another machine?

I want to download HTMLs (example: http://www.brpreiss.com/books/opus6/) and join it to one HTML or some other format that i can use on ebook reader. Sites with free books don't have standard paging, they're not blogs or forums, so don't know how to do some automatic crawling and merging.

My kindle3 will arrive tomorrow, and I have plenty of PDF files that I want to read on it.
I would like to convert them to txt so I can adjust the font size.
Is there any convenient way to do that?
PS: if there isn't, I shall write one by myself.

I'm just getting started with my shiny new Kindle. The main purpose I have for it is to be able to conveniently read a lot of fiction freely (and legally) available on the internet.
For this purpose, I need a way to easily create very simple e-reader-friendly versions of existing, available material.
Ideally, I would like to:
- Copy-paste material into the ebook. Assume material is text with simple formatting, e.g. at the level of bold and italic typefaces. This is mostly material I'm directly copy-pasting off web pages.
- Mark where segments begin and end (e.g. complete stories, acts of a play, chapters of a book)
Nice bonuses would be:
- Simple conversion to a Kindle-readable format (so I wouldn't have to go through Calibre every time)
- Preview ability, so I can see that the created file looks roughly as I expect it to, without transferring to my Kindle or using a third program.
A major issue I've had with my attempts so far is that I haven't found an ebook format editor that I can simply copy-paste content into - plain text would work; but lose even basic formatting; html isn't copy-paste-able; the ebook-specific formats I'm less familiar with, and I assume they need their own editor; Word documents aren't easily convertible for e-readers.
Example usages would be collecting a bunch of stories from an online fiction magazine, or converting this play into an ebook file which can flip easily between acts. For personal use only, it doesn't need to be at all polished.
Clarification: I am brand new to the Kindle and to ebooks in general, so it is entirely possible I am unfamiliar with basic terms, tools and conventions.

I'm trying to learn a language and I want to be able to open the English version of a book and the German one together on the screen to compare etc. I'm particularly interested in displaying Kindle-typebooks side-by-side.
I need software that is simple to use and not-too-ugly looking. Ha. Aesthetics seem to matter to me when I'm learning...or, any reader that can display ANY popular ebook formats in parallel form will do!
Edit: Anyone know anything with scroll binding?

I'm looking for a windows program for cataloging my DVD, video files, ebook, etc...
The program must have some retrieval of information from the internet and from the files themselves.
Also, one MUST HAVE requirement is that if a file/ebook changes location, I need to be able to change it in the software. Even better if the program allows bulk updating...
Update
Order of preference is: open-source, freeware, shareware, commercial.

I have a number of ebooks that I am managing using calibre - E-book management. These books are in a number of various formats (pdf, chm, epub, mobi...etc). I found a blog post that detailed using Calibre to convert the ebooks to ".mobi" versions and then, by double-clicking on the converted books, they would be added to my "Kindle for PC" library. This worked very well.
However, I can't seem to work out how to sync the books I've added to my "Kindle for PC" library with my "Kindle for iPhone" library.
I should also mention that I do not own a Kindle, all I'm trying to achieve is to be able to sync the books I've added to "Kindle for PC" to "Kindle for iPhone".
Has anyone managed to do this?

How would one (download and) convert HTML-structures into EPUB (or any other format suitable for the Sony PRS-505 reader)?
My question is not how to convert a single HTML file into an EPUB file, as this is easy; what I mean is, I have some books I want to read on my Sony PRS-505 and these books are most often online in HTML format but withmany interlinked pages and there is one page with the list of contents, like this example
http://www.edge.org/documents/ThirdCulture/d-Contents.html
... or sometimes it's a little bit more complicated as the list of contents only lists the chapters, and inside the chapters there are links to sub-chapters, like in this example:
http:SLASHSLASHwww.hyw.com/Books/WargamesHandbook/Contents.htm (I can only post 1 hyperlink now b/c of user restriction, so this is why there is SLASHSLASH instead of //)
I want to convert these examples and several others, with correct chapters, images and some acceptable formatting etc, so basically I want to make a proper ebook out of the HTML-tree.
What is the easiest way?

Do you know any PDF reader which remembers the last page for each document?
The usage scenario should be something like this:
- A new PDF file is loaded into the reader
- The PDF file is opened on page 0
- Reading, reading, reading ... Reading finished at page 37.
- Reader closed
...
- The same PDF file is loaded into the reader
- The PDF File is opened on page 37
I don't need multiple bookmarks. Just one is enough. Any tips?
