How do I revert to an alternate version of a package on Ubuntu?

I upgraded to an alpha version of a package in a PPA and would now like to revert back to the official version in the Ubuntu universe. What steps do I need to take?

Edit: The question originally read "How do I revert to a previous version of a package on Ubuntu?". I've changed it to more accurately reflect the contents.

Downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Home Premium?

A few months ago, I acquired a Windows 7 Ultimate product key and updated from Home Premium to Ultimate. Well, now I get the "This copy of Windows is not genuine" message. I have the Home Premium product key that I was using before I upgraded to Ultimate. I would want to know how I could downgrade from Ultimate to Home Premium without having any CD and only the product key. If it helps, it's a 64-bit OS. Thanks in advance!

Will IE9 run on Windows 10?

I need to install IE9 on Windows 10, but cannot. I keep getting a message "Internet Explorer 9 is already installed on this system".

I found an article on how to downgrade from IE10 TO IE9, but it didn't work on Windows 10 http://anyfindings.blogspot.com/2013/04/restore-ie9-after-installing-ie10.html

I removed windows 11 and all installed updates for internet explore, but no luck.

BTW, I support a web app that uses data islands. That's why I still need IE9.

Can I switch from Chrome dev to beta without uninstalling?

I'm on OS X 10.9 using Chrome 36.0.1976.2 dev. I want to "downgrade" to the beta track. Do I need to back up my user data and reinstall Chrome as outlined (for Windows but I get the gist) in this question? Or can I switch and just wait for the next beta update? The second seems to be described on the Chromium website:

If you decide to switch from Dev to Beta or from Beta to Stable, the new channel will be on an earlier version of Google Chrome. You won't get automatic updates on that channel until it reaches a version later than what you're already running.

But I can't find any outline of a procedure to "switch tracks" like that.

Am I stuck reinstalling?

How to remove Media Center from Windows 8

I bought 2 Windows 8 upgrades, 1 for my PC and 1 for my notebook. I added Windows Media Center to my notebook using the free offer in November (side note: the key was emailed to me within 5 minutes, I see many people have been complaining that it takes a few days).

Today I decided to add WMC to my PC as well, so I went onto the Microsoft website, same like last time, and I received the email within a few minutes. Once I added WMC, entered the key and the computer rebooted, my activation is now broken:

This product key is already being used on another PC. Try a different key or buy a new one.

After rereading the product key email, I realised that the WMC key was exactly the same as the one I had received in November for my notebook (I used the same email, i.e. my Microsoft account Outlook email, for both). I didn't think this would be a problem, as on Microsoft's feature pack page it states:

...is limited to five licenses per customer per promotion.

So then I decided, I'll just remove WMC from my PC and go back to Windows 8 Pro. So I turned off the WMC feature, PC restarted, activation still broken because my key has been replaced. I then tried to activate it with my original Pro key. The error it gave was that this key cannot be used with this version of Windows, as it is now Windows 8 Pro with Media Center and not Windows 8 Pro anymore.

I've searched a bit and it seems the only way to remove it is do a clean install. I tried the Windows 8 Downgrade Helper, which told me I was already running Win 8 Pro when I tried to downgrade, and that I was running Win 8 Pro with Media center when I tried the other option.

To sum up: How do I remove Windows Media Center from Windows 8 Pro without having to do a clean install?

Arch Linux - How do I downgrade my kernel?

I just did a system upgrade which included my kernel. After which, my wifi has broken. After some google'ing, it seems I'm not the only person this has happened to.

RT2860 drivers don't play nicely with the 2.6-32 kernel.

So, how can I downgrade my kernel? I still have the old one in my pacman cache but I'm not sure how to go about removing the current and install the old.

I tried doing a 'pacman -Rsn kernel26[firmware|headers] but OSS (sound system) complained that it required *headers as a dependancy.

Is it safe to just install the old kernel26* (firmware, headers, base) and then remove the current? How do I go about doing this? :/

Downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 7

I have a brand new ASUS laptop that came with Windows 10 pre-installed. I would like to downgrade this to Windows 7.

Do I need to get a valid Windows 7 key? If yes, how is this downgrade process different from just installing a different operating system?

Thank you very much

Asus K75D windows 8, install windows 7

I've just booted a brand new Asus K75DE notebook which comes with Windows 8 pre-installed. I was amazed when the serial key was not sticked to the bottom of the laptop, and after some research I found that the serial number is embedded in the bios firmware.

The laptop is meant for one of my relatives which has next to no PC experience and the learning curve for Windows 7 was hard enough. Now, I want to install Windows 7 on this machine by downgrading. I've got a Windows 7 media and everything is prepared. I've got a couple of questions before I begin;

  • The serial number for Windows 8, is it the serial number presented at the "Serial Number" column in the first screen in bios? I'd like to know if I ever need to re-install windows 8.
  • Does the Windows 8 serial work for Windows 7?
  • An alternative is to re-enable the old "Start" button and disable the Metro UI, but this does not seem to be possible without 3rd party software (which I'm not interested in)?

For the record I'd just like to comment on how hard it was for me to just find the shut down menu and I can't imagine how hard this will be for my relative.

How to downgrade Chrome from dev to beta channel without losing my profile?

Would it be possible to downgrade from the dev channel (6.0.477.0) to version 5 without losing my profile(s)?

I was thinking either by downgrading without having to uninstall my current version, or by backing up the profile folders. Would this cause any issues?
